Munising Area Trail Report – 03/23

MUNISING AREA UPDATE via Alger County SORVA –

TRAIL REPORT – Saturday March 23, 2019
GREAT GROOMING RESULTS!
Temperatures dropped last night and grooming operations went great. There are a few areas of Trail 8 where the snow is getting “Sugary” but they are flat underneath. Overall very good late season trails. Details here: www.algersorva.com/trailreport/3-23-2019/

MUNISING AREA UPDATE via TNT Trenary Northern Trails – March 23, 2019

Well, the trail is over all in great shape. With the exception of a few water holes, and tonight I found a sink hole. I fear we won’t be able to groom much longer. Temps will be warm again this coming week. The sink hole wasn’t there when I first went through, and it was the weight of the tractor that broke it free. It was a 2′ deep hole. I was able to fill it in, however there was water in the bottom and it most likely won’t hold. This will most likely be the last weekend of smooth trails from us. We will talk more about it, and may try one more time yet and see what happens. Be aware of the trail ahead of you if you go out riding this weekend as the water holes could make a great day bad. Ride right and stay safe.

Wow, early spring has got the falls all fired up. Very cool. I'm glad to see the owner of the Terrace is gettin out and enjoying the UP instead of just living there.

Although there is potential for Aurora tonight, it may be brief as the moon will rise around 1130. Clear skies will give way to clouds and a chance for light rain and flurries late tonight as a cold front slides across Lake Superior. Winds will increase from the north with gusty conditions throughout the UP, especially in the Keweenaw. ... See MoreSee Less

Through much discussion, we have decided that last night's groom would be the last for this season. The trail should be able to take sled traffic with no issues, but may not take the weight of the tractor. We would like to thank all of the local businesses for their support along with all the people near and far who supported our efforts. Stay tuned as we still have lots going on. We have a Chicken dinner on May 18th in Trenary and many different summer projects going on. Big things are in the works! Ride safe and thank you all again! Will ... See MoreSee Less

The more advertising, the less likely it is to happen. Unfortunately news coverage tends to jinx it. Maybe it will, maybe it won't lol.

Frederic / Gaylord Area Trail Report – Sledheads of Frederic – 03/21

Yes I am still here, its 2 oclock on thursday afternoon and I just got to Frederic about 20 minutes ago. Now that the snow is leaving I went to our weekly Century 21 real estate meeting and did that and our new listings home tour. I did see 2 sleds ride thru Frederic yesterday but trails or whats left of them are mostly ice and slush. For those of you that think you want to try one more time to ride if you know of a spot in the woods where there are two tracks you will have to unload at that area and ride, so you will have to work for it but you should be able to pull it off. So back to my ride in the u.p. Left the parking lot in Newberry at Timber Charlies and headed up to Wolf Inn and then to Pine Stump. From there trail to Grand Marais and was near town at about six but that was to early to check in so I did 888 to 88 to 8 which is always fun. Saw five different groomers that afternoon. Went and checked into Superior Hotel, very cool old school hotel with ten rooms upstairs and 2 shared bathrooms. Rick and Mary are great hosts and I have wanted to stay there for a long time and am so glad I finally did. Met Josh and Amber from Romulus at Lake Superior Brewing Company and had a good time talking with them. Apparently her dad (Jay McCumber) reads here everyday too so a shout out to him….Tuesday morning I was up and away for another 130 miles of great riding, ran over to the Bear Trap and then to Shingleton and back to Newberry for a total of 231 miles. Great riding for the end of the season. Seney, Grand Marais, Chippewa, and Munising groomers all doing an incredible job up there and I think they still have enough snow to make it thru this weekend. Roads pretty dry getting into Grand Marais but worth doing it. You can always get new carbides and slide. Here is a link to the video I did of my trip. I have to say I cant believe I did what I did in the video as I am always harping at people to come to complete stops at the signs and I certainly didnt here. I have no excuse for it but am aware that I did. Riding in the U.P. March 2019  Thanks for checking in. Pete

Wish i would have saw this yesterday. Rode from Trout Lake to Grand Marais by myself. Made the same stops as you did. Wolf Inn , Pine Stump, and Lake Superior Brewery. Sounds like i was just in front of you. Could have rode with an up north legend. Headed home today, have a good ride.

Pete, do you know if they are only closing the trails for the summer? Or is it going to be next winter too?

Cute room!
