Paradise Area Trail Report – 12/15

December 15, 2019

20 degrees this morning and snowing. Looks like we picked up about 3 inches of fluffy lake effect last night. Here`s what went on yesterday…..

Groomer Kevin and Chic Drisdrowski ( I think I spelled that right ) from Chics hot dog stand out on trails #452 and #8 took off in a groomer at 10 am to hit the Point trails. I talked to Kevin briefly this morning on how it went. He told me the Point trails are a total mess…..tons of trees blown down and a fair share of water. He said they busted their butts until dark and then headed back to the barn. He is back out there again today, more on that in a minute.

Groomers Mike, Gerald, myself and a NEW GUY Zack Ferguson ( WELCOME!!!!! ) plus a guy who drove all the way from Mt. Pleasant to help us who`s name is Mike Hoffman all took off towards Pine Stump on Trail #8 at 10am also. We took the remaining 2 groomers and Mike H. rode his sled with a tobagan in tow and took off in front of us. Talk about a mess!!!! We have never seen it this bad as far as trees down!!!!! Long story short, we made it as far as Little Lake off of CR 500 and turned around after a HARD 8 hrs of work, and we had 6 more to go to get back to the barn!!! The rest of the trail to Pine Stump shouldn`t be too bad as far as trees down cause there ain`t to many left after the fire a few years back.

Now, back to Groomer Kevin. He is back out on the Point trails today with Groomer Scott and ANOTHER NEW GUY Dale Grahm ( WELCOME to you too!!! ). They took 2 machines and are gonna try and tackle the rest of the Point. I will hear from him tomorrow to see how that went.

All fer today…..just trying to keep y`all updated.

LET `ER SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Groomer Chris

2020 Shipwreck Society Annual Meeting and Dinner to be Postponed

Much like other businesses and tourist attractions in Upper Peninsula, the staff and Board of Directors of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society are monitoring the COVID-19 situation in Michigan. Based on projections from the CDC and other agencies at the state and federal level, we find it difficult to envision a scenario where conditions would allow us to host the Shipwreck Society's Annual Meeting and Dinner on May 16. Therefore, we are postponing this event. The safety of our members, staff and guests are our top priority, and we'll look to possibly reschedule this event in the fall. Please watch our website for updates and more information. Finally, we'll also be watching for state and federal recommendations when we consider the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum's opening date for the 2020 season, which would typically be on May 1. More information to come. Thank you and be safe!

It is with deep regret and sorrow that we are announcing the end of grooming for the season. Due to this stupid virus and all the restaurants and bars closing and most of the hotels in town closing also, there seems to be nobody UP here.

Our trails are still in pretty decent shape and there is still good riding to be had. They are hard and flat. We do still have a good 2 foot of snow on the ground. The gas station in town says they will remain open but have shorter hours. Us here at Saunders Sunrise Cabins will remain open and we do have kitchenettes to cook your own food, in case you do want to come UP for one last ride.

I think you will all agree our trails this season were pretty darn good for the weather we had to deal with. We got a late start and an early finish but all in all a successful season. I didn`t want it to end this way (early), but it is what it is. We do plan on having brushing parties this fall and I will announce them this summer sometime so check back from time to time to keep updated.

So, I will bid you all a good fairwell and thanks for following me and trusting me for honest trail reports and riding with us. Till next season........LET `ER SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We talked to you Tues on the trail. 452 trail was awesome. The best riding ever.

Been a rough year for you guys. Maybe you could set up a donation thing on Facebook for all your hard work this year

We only made it up once this year but the trails were great. Might try one more trip if the snow shows up tomorrow & Friday.

Thanks for the hard work and long hours! Still the best trails when mother nature cooperates.

35 degrees this morning and kinda foggy/misty out. The weather is all over the map so I`m not even gonna venture on a guess on whats coming. I do know all about the trails so here ya go.....

On top of the list is the trail closure we had to do. The swamp south of town opened up yesterday so we had to close the gates. We had a "local" ride thru there and he took a couple of pics. It is UGLY, do not go around the gates!!!! The rest of trail #8 south is fine though.

Groomer Mike ran the Pine Stump trail #8 and called it good. The short sections of dirt road we use are down to mud but you can get around them fine.

Groomer Zach ran the Falls trail #45 last night and called it fair. He said there are a few wet spots starting to show up but no open water holes yet.

Groomer Glenn ran the Point trails # 452 and #453 and called them good. These are high ground trails so we don`t have much of a problem with water on them but there is a couple of water holes you have to watch out for, but for now they are still froze solid.

So, there you have it. Me thinks this may be the last good weekend of riding unless something extreme happens with the weather. Keep checking back, and if it does I`ll let ya know.

I want to give a special shout out to our "local" Ed Sabo for the heads up on the swamp. Its the help from people like you that makes this all work. We can`t be everywhere all the time on the trails to keep an eye on things. THANK YOU Ed!!!!!!!!

I just wanted to say thank you for the excellent trails yesterday. The swamp was not too bad early afternoon. Trail 453 was the absolute best I have ever seen it. We were just going to do the whitefish point trail and head back to Brimley but the trails were so awesome we decided to ride to Pine Stump. Fantastic all the way there and back. The swamp last night was a little dicey but we made it through. I am not surprised you closed the gates today as we were talking about it after the 6 of us barely made it through around 9 last night. Thank you so much for all of your hard work and long hours. We really appreciate it.

Groomed or not, the DNR in Trout Lake said it’s never ok to ride the shoulder of an “M” road. Following other ski tracks doesn’t guarantee anything

No its illegal to ride along the road ! He saying it's over for this season !

Before they opened the gates you could ride along the road to get into town. I wouldn’t do it this time of year but I think you could if you wanted to

You can’t ride the shoulder of an M road but you can ride the unplowed ditch

Does that mean you're gonna groom out by road so people can get to the trail on that end?

Don Nehls Jr

Stay on the unplowed part next to the road and that's not illegal.
