We wrapped up our tour season last Saturday (April 13) with our final guests of the season. Fern was my assistant guide and photographer (yes, these are all her photos). A huge thanks goes to our guests and staff who made this incredibly snowy season one to remember! If you'd like to join us next winter, we will begin taking reservations for the 2019-2010 on May 1st! ... See MoreSee Less

BLACK BEARS ARE BEING SIGHTED THIS PAST WEEK as they are coming out of hibernation HERE IN THESE TAHQUAMENON WOODS. That is a sure sign of Spring even as they crawl out through a 2 foot deep blanket in this winter wonderland !

Female Black Bears wake up briefly to GIVE BIRTH TO THEIR CUBS DURING THE WINTER. While in hibernation, the mother bear produces breast milk to nourish the baby cubs. The baby cubs nurse and put on weight and keep warm by cuddling with its mother while its mother sleeps.

Male Black Bears and female Black Bears without cubs can often wake up several times during winter months and may even go out briefly to hunt or forage for food before returning to their den to hibernate again. This is seen on occasion here in the U.P.

Bears hibernate during winter months when their food sources are low out in the woods. That is especially true here in the U.P. when much of their main food source - green vegetation – has fallen from the trees by October, and is also covered by two to four feet of snow !!

By early Fall, Black Bears begin searching out potential denning sites which they will enter from mid-October to late November up here. The Black Bears spend from four to six months of each year in their dens !!

When winter is getting over usually in late March or April, the black bears leave their dens to eat and start regaining body fat in preparation for the next winter. Actually 75% of a bears diet consists of green vegetation especially grasses and clover.

One of the SERVICES PROVIDED BY TAHQUAMENON WOODS is helping landowners with food plot development for many kinds of wildlife. Food plots which a landowner may develop on their property can provide a lot of valuable nourishment for wildlife starting in the Spring, and lasting into the Fall for a large variety of birds and animals.

We are coming up on a great time in the Tahquamenon Woods as we see Mother Nature working her Spring duties. Now is a great time for you to begin planning on how you can enjoy more of the wildlife and the outdoors this coming summer.

TO CHECK OUT SOME REAL BLACK BEARS IN THE TAHQUAMENON WOODS , plan to visit the OSWALD’S GAME RANCH about 10 miles north of Newberry. This is the largest BEAR ONLY ranch in the United States !! They now have about 30 bears, and 4 habitats to walk around safely outside to see the bear living in the woods !!! And Dean Oswald always has a few cub bears which is a treat to get close up with for pictures !!

THINK OUTSIDE and start planning your Spring adventure with Mother Nature in these grrreat Tahquamenon Woods !!!
