Gaylord Area Trail Report – 02/18
Gaylord Bureau – Attention Northern Michigan Snowmobilers! We’ve received approximately 6 inches of fresh snow overnight Friday, with forecasts predicting continued lake-effect snow throughout the weekend. While the current trail conditions are suitable for riding, Please use caution some trails are showing dirt. We will keep you updated on any additional changes to the weather. Please check back for updates and trails conditions. Please remember that groomers have the right of way and kindly move off the trail so they can safely proceed. If you approach a groomer from behind, the operator will signal when it’s safe for you to pass. Groomers are here to make your ride more enjoyable so please be courteous! From my cameras I could still see the one set of car tracks thru my drive at Sledheads. So I am still sticking with my thoughts from yesterday that it would only be kind of good for the first couple sleds thru. I see all kinds of posts on people that want to or are coming up to ride saying its only carbides and slides, all I know is I wouldnt take my sled out with what we have. I dont like it anymore than everyone else but thats just the way it is. On a brighter note I met Trevor Gruhn yesterday who is a regular reader from down by Kzoo. I fixed him up with a new Sledheads T and sweatshirt. He like everyone else wishes there was more snow too. We need a really heavy duty system snow to hit us. I talked to David over at the swamp last night and he said he only had 2 sleds in all day yesterday and that was about 9 last night. Thanks for checking in and if you do ride please ride safely. Weather thru next tuesday is pretty much in upper 30s, things are icy and melting. It never fails that we have great snow and then in a few days it starts to leave us. Riding on sunday and monday was some of the best snow we have had in years. Lets see what things look like after a few days of this. Its wednesday morning about 10:30 in the morning and 35 degrees. Not a mogul the whole trip and only met one sled before lunch. WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Gaylord Michigan >> Precip ends tonight, although fog remains with reduced visibility. Rain returns Thurs PM into Fri as temps moderate. However, icy secondary roads could develop, along with ice jams along rivers, and perhaps localized minor flooding. Ended up closed again yesterday as there was another blessing of 6 inches of snow and we took off on another great ride of untouched snow, leaving Frederic and up towards mount Frederic and lakes of the north to starvation lake and back to Frederic. Lunch at the hide away and back to Frederic. About 150 miles of prime riding between sunday and monday. Sundays ride took us to lovells for a great pizza. Now time to get to real work today. Pics below are of the Jordan Valley groomers with a giant project on the trail. The guys were there to get the track back on the groomer. It actually came off a few days ago but they had to gather up equipment to put it back together. Wow what a huge project. A big thank you to all those volunteer guys. Thanks for checking in. Slick and potentially hazardous road conditions are expected Tuesday morning through the midday hours. JORDAN VALLEY AREA UPDATE via Jordan Valley Trails Council >> Thank you to Kalkaska County Sand and Snow - KCSAS and Rick for contacting us when they heard of our breakdown. Within 24 hours of breakdown and recovery we had a track from the blade of the KCSAS machine to the blade of our machine! Great work and doing it trail side too.

Remember that 32° is the key temperature not only at the surface, but in the vertical. Any warmer and we trend more towards rain. Any colder and we trend more towards snow. Be mindful on bridges, overpasses, sidewalks, parking lots, etc. traveling Tuesday AM.
We do trend slightly warmer mid-late week. More 30s if not a few low 40s before another rain/snow mix returns late Thursday into the weekend.

Today the crew tackled putting the track on the machine and made quick work of it! Can’t thank our retired groomer/board member Doug for jumping into action to help out today! Mike, Phil, Doug, Benny, Rich, Pete and Tom were all hands on deck and we appreciate each of them and their efforts! The last 72 hours has been a great team effort by everyone that helped out. THANK YOU!
We’re monitoring the weather this week and will take grooming day by day until the end of the week. Looks like Thursday/Friday will be our worse days with temps at or near 40, but the crews are in order to get everything groomed for the weekend after temps drop back down. Trails right now are the best they have been for this time of year in many years!
