MUNISING AREA UPDATE via Alger County SORVA – 01/23
TRAIL REPORT – Saturday, 01-23-2021 KEEP THE SNOW COMING!
Not a big change from yesterday’s report. Overall groomed trail conditions are good. We again received a few inches of new blowing and drifting snow yesterday but sun forecast for today. Grooming last night included all of Trail 8 and Trail 7 from Christmas South to Buckhorn Road and Trail 418. Trail 7 heading South starts thinning South of Doe Lake Road with reports of some gravel mix closer to CR440. Trail 422 has vehicles still driving on Miners Castle Road and between M-28 and H-58 there are few large depressions. Trail 417 will be rocky and needs much more snow before it can be set. More snow is also needed to fill in underlying trail defects in areas so keep an eye out for that surprise hole in the trail. If out riding please avoid hard throttle starts and digging holes so we can continue to build a clean flat base that will hold. Please be patient as we continue to work on getting these trails set. MUNISING AREA UPDATE via TNT Trenary Northern Trails – 01/22
Trail update 1-22-21 Well, just got done grooming for the night. Have to say that much of the trail is getting to be in decent shape. The fresh snow tonight helps out a lot, and more coming today. There are some areas that are still bumpy because we just don’t have enough snow to fully fill them in yet. Also there are 2 wet areas that we are not yet bringing the groomer into. I was able to push a bunch of snow into one of them but we still need more tn finnish it. Over all I would give the trail a fair to good rating. More on the fair side, because it will take time and snow to get it to great. If you venture out on your sled this weekend, keep a watch out for dips and ice chunks as they can come out of no ware fast. Be safe, and ride right.

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Another system brings a quick round of light to moderate snowfall late tonight into early Saturday. A widespread 1-3 inches of snow is expected, possibly locally higher up to 3-4in in the eastern UP. A change over to lake effect snow is expected in the NW wind snow belts Saturday afternoon, lingering into Sunday. A couple more fluffy inches and some blowing snow is still expected over the north central and eastern U.P. this morning. A quick hitting system looks to bring 1 to 4 fluffy inches of snowfall tonight through Saturday morning. WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Lake effect totals through Friday afternoon, December 19th, 2025 have been updated slightly to account for latest shifts in atmospheric conditions.

As temperatures fall early Friday, moisture pools back in, mixed with colder air over the warmer lakes, turning on the lake effect machine for both of the Great Lakes that influence our normal lake effect zones. A respectable 1-3" to 2-5" is possible in the fairly typical areas shown on the map. The narrow lane of higher elevation across the Keweenaw Peninsula and Porcupine Mountains are most-likely to experience totals exceeding 6". You may have noticed our one main change was the expansion of T-1" over to the east side of the state just as a general precaution to any snow squalls that make it across the state. Not everyone will get a rogue snow squall, but it is in the odds for nearly everyone. A snow squall is a thin, but intense band of quick snow that can produce at least half an inch of snow in minutes time, while knocking visibility down from 10 miles, to a quarter mile in moments time. Additionally, a quick coating of snow may hide any ice that was able to form from the freeze later tonight. Lake effect snow and snow squalls are poised to start later this evening around 8 pm EST (earlier for the western UP), and run primarily through 1 pm EST Friday. A couple lake effect bands may last through 6 pm across northern Michigan near Gaylord, and the central UP near Munising.
Each area is never guaranteed the totals shown on the screen. This is why we call it a prediction. The totals that are shown however do have the greatest odds of occurring. Yes, we are still trying to find that crystal ball, but no luck to this point. MUNISING AREA UPDATE via TNT Trenary Northern Trails >> This is the earliest we were able to successfully pan the whole trail since we have started grooming. Brandon was able to get almost everything relatively smooth. We need a little more snow to fill the ditch and freeze in the hole along CO RD 456. But the rest of the trail is in rideable early season shape. This year is shaping up to be far better than the last 2 years for snowfall in our area. With luck, we can have a successful season and with your help, we can keep it a safe one also. Please ride with caution and please ride safe all year! #munising #snowphotos
WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Active weather is expected for the remainder of the work week. Winds pick up tonight, gusting to 25-45mph (highest in the western and north-central UP), falling back into Thursday morning. Light rain and patchy mixed precipitation return Thursday morning, transitioning over to widespread snow late Thursday into Thursday night before tapering off to light lake effect snow Friday.
