GRAND MARAIS AREA UPDATE via Grand Marais Sno-Trails Assoc. – 12/03
Here is what we know…..there is a LOT of snow in da woods. Certainly a better problem than last year, but will take a few days for us to “get on top” of all this white gold. North, South and East got packed last night. We are attempting to groom West (H58) this morning with the goal of everything being groomed tomorrow night, first time.
Trails can be ridden. Water holes are still in process of freezing in.
Our base is time and materials. We have plenty of materials but need time to get a perfect base.

This should have been our sign to turn around back to grand marais. We went around it and had to deal with the drifted plains part of the trail the rest of the way to Pinestump.

For riders headed this way today and through the weekend. Both the Antrim County Snowmobile Club and East Jordan Trailblazers lots will be plowed for parking as well as the Sand Lake Park and Ride. Groomers have been out this week and will continue through the weekend. Unfortunately Monday says 40* and rain, but we’ll access that when it comes.
Snowfall on our trail system still varies drastically as it does across the area. The concentration of snow is in the Alba/Mancelona/Starvation Lake/ Lakes of the North areas. As you go 25 miles in all directions the snow drastically drops off. While the overall snow totals so far are in the 24-36”+ range, that compacts to 2-4” on the trail. Many of us have all asked for your help maintaining trails with your right thumb. Be vigilant, there can be and will be groomers on the trails 24 hours a day as snowfall and traffic and trail conditions warrant. Please note 2 trail hazards:
*Trail 766 – 🚧🚨CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE🚨🚧. There are 2 projects underway on Jordan River Road removing culverts and bridges being installed. The original timeline was for them to be completed before December 1, but unfortunately that isn’t the case. Things are taking longer than expected, and we are being told possibly by the end of the month for one bridge and unknown timeframe on second bridge. *Trail 76 – There will be logging activity on the central portion of the trail off Webster Road north of Elmira. We were notified Wednesday they were going to be moving into this section. Please be alert as there maybe debris, logging equipment in the trial, and unfavorable trail conditions. Unfortunately we were not given enough warning to try and mitigate the conflict with an alternate trail. This will be in effect for the entire snowmobile season.

JORDAN VALLEY AREA UPDATE via Jordan Valley Trails Council >> What a week it’s turned out to be! Can’t thank all our volunteers for hitting the trails hard this week and fixing random issues that popped up with trails and machines. Friday was the first day we’ve had all 3 machines up and running, which didn’t last long. What a day today was! We had a track the belts let loose and stranded a volunteer on the trail. Quickly some phone calls were made and we had 5 people converging to head out and rescue. Soon after I called Kevin grooming in the 6215R and told him we had a problem and he said I’m in. As he got back from grooming the North 10 and Jordan Valley, we quickly unhooked the drag, got our work tractor fired up and we were off. After we arrived we assessed the situation and came up with a game plan to get the machine moved off the trail, which was a home run, couldn’t have went any better! Thanks to Mike, Phil (and those that rescued him from the trail so he could go get warmer work clothes and rushed right back), Kevin, Scott, Frank and the other Phil who had a “back ache” and couldn’t attend the festivities 😁. Hats off to the multiple groups that stopped and asked if we needed anything and Chris P’s group that helped us get the heavy track into our loader. Can’t thank all these people enough for their efforts today! Many text and phone calls once we were out of the woods and our friends at Kalkaska County Sand and Snow - KCSAS called us and said, we have a track, come get it! Tomorrow we will be heading to meet Rick and picking up a track to get us back on the trail! We can’t thank our friends and neighbors enough for quickly getting with us when they knew we were down. Plan is to get the machine back up and running Monday! Hoping by Tuesday evening we’ll have all our trails back into shape as all you riders expect! Thank you for your patience. 🚧If you’re in the area of Mancelona Road / Sand Lake Road please be cautious as the machine will be there another day. 🚧 On a high note, trails are great right now for the recent weather! FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> I never made it on here yesterday but there were a steady stream of sleds and its now a cloudy and calm saturday morning at 24 degrees. Havent seen any sleds yet but have had a few calls. I have had several people that I have met thru the years that I havent seen in a long time. Its great to catch up with people. Steve who has a place in traverse city stopped and I rode with him up around lake leelanau years ago. Several people from pennsylvania and I want to send a shout out to Jim Wilkerson in Pennsylvania. He is another great memory from the past. A group of Indiana riders and one of them said I had inspired him to get his knees fixed after I had mine done. Another family Brian and Diedre who bought a home thru me about 20 years ago and brought their daughters in. One of them was only 2 back then and is now in college. I have seen alot of kids grow up over the years and now those little kids are bringing their own in.
