SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/26

12/26- day 1 of “the warm spell”. It was cloudy all day, steady 35 degrees. I heard sleds all day buzzing by on trail 8 right behind my house. My snow gauge reads 16”. Too warm to groom, but I doubt the trails suffered too much.
We’ll keep you posted!

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/25

12/25 evening update
We hope you all had a great Christmas
and also happy 1st night of Chanukah to those who celebrate! We hope you got to spend some time on the trails!

With warm temps coming, grooming will be on hold. With the hard work we’ve put in, they’re pretty darn flat, and we feel we’ve done all we can to pack and preserve a good base.
I’ll for sure still be updating as we move through this little warm spell. I don’t think it’s going to be as bad as many are fearing.

Tomorrow should be another great day to ride.
Get out while you can❄️❄️❄️

<>

12/25- Merry Christmas everyone!

This morning, we took a ride and I can tell ya that Bill’s groom last night is holding up awesome! Here’s his report-

“Tonight on this Christmas Eve I took our Pretty Red Sleigh out on the Powerline, Trail 8 from Raco to Brimley, and Trail 480 part way down Spile Dam Road. I made some nice ribbons 🎀 in the snow for all the good boys and girls to enjoy.

Earlier today I was able to go out for my first snowmobile ride. I rode the trails around Mission Hill, after Raco Dave groomed them to perfection.

Hopefully the mild temperatures over the next week won’t have too much of a negative impact on the hard work of Raco Dave and his Trail Grooming Elves!”

Enjoy the day and get out and ride! 🎄❄🥶

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/29 5:30 PM update
We are strategizing our grooming plan. Winds are still extremely high, and snow is still falling on and off, causing white out conditions and downed trees, as well as power outages. MANY area businesses remain closed.
The Pisten Bully that normally runs the Brimley, Raco, (part of 480, 8, and the Raco Powerline) and Bay Mills (889) areas is still down at the Soo barn, awaiting a part and a quick repair, so those areas will not be groomed until it’s back out there, hopefully tomorrow.
The Kinross crew is waiting for winds to die down some and then they’ll work on 49 south of M80 and the 494 loop.
Don’t even think about taking 472 west of Mac Trail or 480 to the Spile Dam gate (see the pinned post). Trust us. With next to zero visibility and all of that construction equipment in there, it’s just not a good idea.
I am waiting to hear about trail 49 from the Soo to Kinross. Winds may still be too high to groom that, as there are a ton of open areas and it will not make any difference at all.
We’ll attempt the city trails and trail 8 from the Soo to Brimley later tonight.
We are hearing reports of huge drifts along with downed trees, so it may take a few runs to get things back to normal.
We cannot stress this enough- if for some reason you decide to ride (which we are not advising), do not ride alone. Bring a saw and emergency supplies, and be aware that first responders and tow companies will be very busy and it will be very difficult to help you if you have an issue. Download and use the What3Words app. You never know when you might need it.
All open areas will have monster drifts.
I’m hearing 6’+ in spots.
All road crossings will have huge berms from the plows until we can punch them out.
We have our work cut out for us. Please be patient and more than anything, please be safe!
It’s going to be amazing once we get things back in shape! ❄️❄️❄️
More to come soon! #soo

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/29/25
Hey everyone!
Please know that we will get groomers out as soon as it makes sense to do so, meaning once our volunteers can get themselves and their homes dug out.
As we have been sharing, many area businesses are closed as the entire area tries to dig out. The winds have caused heavy drifting, and we had heavy freezing rain right up until the snow hit overnight. Again, there will be trees down, and you will encounter heavy drifting. Anywhere that trails cross roads will have large berms from plows that you’ll have to navigate. The snow is heavy and wet, and getting stuck is highly likely, especially for less experienced riders.
Please be patient and be cautious. We will get things back into shape as soon as we can, but we need to prioritize our own homes and businesses first.
Things should be awesome once we can get the trails cleared and groomed.
Thanks all! #soo

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/29/25
Good morning everyone! Freezing rain switched over to snow around 11 pm here. We picked up around 6” so far. Trees were coated with ice before the snow hit, and winds have picked up so I have no doubt that there will be trees down.
There will also be large drifts in the open areas. We know that people are here to ride, and we are advising extreme caution if you head out, especially until we can get out and assess the trails.
Surrounding areas, please check in with what you’re seeing for new snow as this storm continues.
Thanks all! Be safe! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo1229 #snowphotos12/29/25

Munising Area Trail Report – 12/25

MUNISING AREA UPDATE via Alger County SORVA – 12/25

Merry Christmas
We have been grooming every night. We still have a good base and most of the trails are in great shape. The low traffic the last couple of days sure helps. You will see in the pictures just how smooth the trails are even before we groom them. At times we have felt like we have groomed trails that don’t need to be. We hear complaints from people and we go out and see this and are left wondering what people are expecting. We know 8 North between the Bears Den in Shingleton and the Beartrap gets bad quick. We have been hitting this trail 2x a day. It got to a point where the snow was not bonding (sugar snow). We got a couple of inches of fresh snow and some higher temps a few days ago. It has locked up nicely.

If you got out and rode I am sure you are happy.

More warm temps on the way. This weekend we most likely wont be grooming if the prediction holds. Maybe some colder temps in the evenings will allow grooming. We will make that decision nightly based on conditions. We can do more harm than good to the base we have if we go out. New Years Day on it looks like temps settle back in to being colder.

If folks are really interested in getting on our list of potential groomers, please send your contact info to algersorva@gmail.com. Name, Phone, Email, and Address where you live. We currently have a good group of drivers this season. We can not tolerate operators not following some basic rules and causing damage to the tractors or drags. We have GPS trackers along with forward and rear facing cameras that record when impacts are detected. We also have a Groomer Responsibility Committee. They review incidents and make recommendations to the Groomer Coordinator. This process keeps things fair for all involved. It is all about protecting the equipment!

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

MUNISING AREA UPDATE via TNT Trenary Northern Trails >> We are all cleaning out after all of this snow. Sounds like great snow coverage from end to end. That’s the good part! The bad part is we have so many wind prone areas with heavy drifting, that we need to let it settle for a day and get some sleds over it before we send out the groomer. It is the downfall of being a one groomer club. We don’t have the availability of running tandem to quickly recover from a storm like this. But…. This is the perfect time for all of the “adventurous” riders to break trail in GREAT SNOW!!! Just beware of fallen trees. Carry a saw and report back to us if there are any big ones down that need serious attention. We will report back as soon as we get back out! MUNISING AREA UPDATE via Alger County SORVA >> Well, we got snow. All day yesterday it rained. Transition to snow was last night 8pm.
We are working on getting out of our homes to get to the groomers. 50 to 60 mph winds all night and still blowing hard. Power has been out. If you are brave enough to go out in this wind, bring your chainsaws! It is going to be a solid day of clearing trees for us. The roads are currently blocked by trees and power lines. The picture shows my driveway that i plowed at 5am. Plowing in progress. We are doing all we can. Helping with tree removal would be very much appreciated. Be careful out there. #munising #snowphotosWell, we got snow. All day yesterday it rained. Transition to snow was last night 8pm.
