ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via North Country Snowmobile Club UP >> 12/29
Steve is out on Trail #13, grooming between Hamilton’s North Coast Adventures and Rockland. He will then groom Trail #137 into Ontonagon, refuel and groom it all again on the way back.
He then plans to hit Trail #12 into White Pine, continue on Trail #1 to the Porcupine Mountain Ski Hill and do that all over again on the way back to base at HNCA.
Mac will be in the tractor by 3:00 grooming Trail #1 to Lake of the Clouds and when finished hit Trail #11 (South Boundary Road) to Trail #102 and bring it back to beautiful downtown White Pine.
Please be in the lookout for our machines and download Groomer Tracker to know exactly where we are!
Be careful out there and thank you for riding the 906!!!

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via Scott’s Superior Inn and Cabins >> 12/29
The predicted snowstorm did not disappoint! Higher elevations away from Lake Superior received over a foot of fresh snow, while the lakeshore areas picked up 4–6 inches of wet, heavy, packable snow.
With snowfall totals like this, it will take a couple of days for groomers to fully flatten and set up the trails. Strong winds—gusting up to 60 mph—have created deep drifts in spots, especially in open areas.
If you’re planning to ride in the next day or two, please use caution. Groomers will be doing their best to get on top of everything, but with this much snow and wind, it will take a little time to dial the trails in.
That said, the New Year is kicking off with a great start for snowmobiling in the Ontonagon and Porcupine Mountains area.
Happy trails and ride safe! 🛷❄

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via North Country Snowmobile Club UP >> 12/29
Well Ma Nature tried to make up for the damage she did last week with a good dumping of snow on our system.
It’s 17° and still snowing lightly in beautiful downtown White Pine. As soon as we clean up enough to get out of our homes we will head out to repair and groom.
The plan is for Steve to leave out of Hamilton’s North Coast Adventures and Tractor Mac will head out from White Pine. We will update all when we see what we see.
Be safe out there!
Ride the 906!

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> One of the most absurd snow forecasts we’ve ever made here at MSC, we’ve had to add an impromptu orange color for higher totals. Key Notes: •Snow begins to work into Michigan late tonight, but becomes more widespread during the early morning hours of Sunday. This snow continues through Tuesday morning for the UP, and becomes a snow/freezing rain/sleet mix for northern lower Michigan beginning Sunday afternoon/evening. •Winds will gust between 40-60mph statewide both on Sunday and Monday. •This will be a full on blizzard for much of the Upper Peninsula •Expect scattered power outages across the state •Travel will be near impossible for the UP and northern lower Snow totals will be between one and four FEET when all is said and done on Tuesday in the UP. Further south, a mix is expected which will keep accumulations lower, and also will provide a sharp cutoff of accumulations. The difference between a foot of snow and 2” may be the width of one county. Further south, this system will end as snow for lower Michigan on Monday & Tuesday, which is why we have a wide area within a trace to an inch, and western lower in a 1-3” zone with wording of higher totals possible. We may need to adjust totals here as new data comes clearer for Tuesday. Stay tuned for the icing portion of this forecast. Northern lower Michigan will see significant icing which is not shown or communicated in this forecast graphic or write up. #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo #gaylord#cadillac#benzie#traversecity#petoskeyOne of the most absurd snow forecasts we’ve ever made here at MSC, we’ve had to add an impromptu orange color for higher totals.

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Good morning, A quick hitting, strong clipper continues to bring widespread moderate to heavy snow and high winds to the area this morning. After a brief lull in snow around daybreak, an increase in northerly winds and lake effect snow will return hazardous conditions to the north winds snowbelts this early afternoon. Our attention then turns to a major winter storm set to impact the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region this weekend into early next week. Confidence is continuing to grow regarding significant snowfall accumulations (potentially record breaking) and blizzard conditions that may result in widespread impacts. Please view this morning's informational briefing at the link below for additional details on both today's and this weekend's storm systems. www.weather.gov/media/mqt/DssPacket.pdf #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo ... Went for a ride with my daughter on Christmas. Trails in the Ontonagon and Porcupine Mountains area are currently in early-season condition. Riders will find a mix of good and hazardous sections, so caution is strongly advised.
Conditions:
Some trails are riding well, especially in shaded and higher-elevation areas. Other sections have thin snow cover with exposed rocks and loose gravel—particularly on road crossings, waterways, and open areas.
Weather Impact:
A brief warm-up this weekend may soften the base and create additional hazards. Ride smart and adjust speeds accordingly.
Looking Ahead!!!
The good news—up to 20 inches of snow is forecasted for next week. If that materializes, trail conditions should improve dramatically and begin shaping up very nicely for the season.
Bottom line:
Early-season riding is possible, but expect variable conditions. Use caution, watch for hazards, and stay on marked trails. Much better riding is on the horizon once the next round of snow arrives.
Ride safe and stay tuned for updates. ❄️🏁

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via North Country Snowmobile Club UP >> 12/27
Good morning, Sled Heads. President Mac-Daddy and Mama Sledhead finally got out for our first joy ride yesterday. Our daughter came up north for the holidays and brought her better half. We took him for his first run ever and he LOVED it!
Thanks to Hamilton’s North Coast Adventures for the great rental sleds for our family!
The trails are DEFINITELY in early season condition. Gale force winds last week scoured the lakeshore and all high ground trail is dirt or grass with thin snow in the dips. Ridable, but gritty.
Trail 11 was good, but deteriorating to slushy with the current temps.
Trail 102 was recently groomed and a great ride thanks to Gogebic Greg and Gogebic Area Grooming. Hanging brush and a couple downed trees are becoming exposed in the melt.
Trail 1 from Bergland to Silver City was in good condition.
Wet areas are reopening in this warm up. When you get to low-lying/wet areas, we recommend treating them as single file center only trail sections. If there is open water, and you are not comfortable crossing, please go around or turn around.
Colder weather and ❄🌨 is in the forecast. Get out there and do Heikki Lunta with us!!
