Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 03/09

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Western & Southern UP Trail Reports – 3/9

Here’s my Monday afternoon trail report. After 2 days of 50° + 60° weather it got cold last night and stayed cold all day. So that turned those nice soft trails into very hard icy trails with very little soft stuff on top. Everything is very icy and thin in the corners. As you can see in the pics below it’s getting snurty near all road crossings and thin spots(Rockland).
Long story short we’re still riding and you can get just about anywhere you want south Houghton.

Snowmobile trails are in good condition throughout the Keweenaw. Some road crossings and inter-city limits have bare spots, but the trails are still in good shape. Trails are groomed daily throughout the region.

  • There is logging a mile north of Phoenix on Trail 3.  Please pay attention to the signs and stay on the trail or this trail will be CLOSED.
  • Trail 133 is closed for logging. The trail section from Dollar Bay to Lake Linden (a portion of Trail 3) and the Freda Trail (Trails 121 & 120) will be closed the entire season for repair.
  • Valley Sno Drifters trail from Lake Linden to Dreamland Restaurant & Bar is OPEN!
  • The Portage Lift Bridge is open to snowmobile traffic.
  • Trail 133 is closed for logging.

Remember when you’re out on the trails to watch out for the groomers.  They have the right away.

Please stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, drive safely.  The signs on the trails are there for rider’s safety so please DO NOT remove or destroy them.

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 3/8

Had another GREAT ride today in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula

Hoping the Groomers are able to resume grooming operations tomorrow and that some additional snow falls this week!

Tucking the sleds in for the night and will add some details later if it’s not too late!

The basics are
– road crossings and parking lots are thin to bare

– trails had chop in areas and other areas were flat as can be

– snow consistency is mashed potatoes

– most trails are still snow covered with the exception of small bare spots. As the day went on trails definitely got softer

– grooming should resume tomorrow if temps allow

– I did not ride south of Calumet at all and getting through Houghton/Hancock would involve major amounts of pavement (not recommended at all)

– getting fuel and staging out of Vansville Bar is still decent as some snow cover in parking lot still

– tomorrow is supposed to be colder and there is a chance of snow this week

– you meet some great people when it is late season riding…. pretty much e regime is a diehard and just happy to be on their sled!

If you ride today please share your photos and/or comments!

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have if you are UP here now to ride this week and not familiar with trail routes and the area!

The last two photos are closeups of the trail – the most accurate way to describe the overall condition by right before sunset tonight

Munising Area Trail Report – 03/08

MUNISING AREA UPDATE via Alger County SORVA – 3/8

Trail Report. Sunday March 8,2020
Photos – Bully grooming last night.
Trail 419 is ungroomable due to ice on hills between munising and wetmore and toward Christmas. No daytime grooming with forecast temps near 50 degrees today. Sunday night will most likely not have machines out either with wet snow conditions expected. We’ll watch and do what we can.

MUNISING AREA UPDATE via TNT Trenary Northern Trails – 3/8

There’s still a great base on our trail even with the warm temps. Get out and enjoy it while you still can.

<>

So two night ago Gary was out, last night I was out. Gary was out during the storm, did all he could, I was out last night cleaning up after the storm with a lot of drifting. We both had a long night. Tonight Steve is out and is reporting some bad sections of the trail. They will be smooth in the morning, but with warm temps again the trail takes a lot of abuse and gets best up quickly. Going to be close to 50 tomorrow (Sunday) and may not get below freezing Sunday night, so most likely we won’t be grooming Sunday night. The next week we are looking at high temps during the day, but still cool at night. We will be grooming every night we possibly can untill mother nature says we can’t no more. Ride on the right and stay safe out there…
