SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 02/16
2/16 7pm update-
Lane just got back after pulling a double route on what we call Kinross east and Kinross west. Trail 49 South of Kinross, 494, and 472 west to the Rudyard turn around. Not a lot of pics as he was solo and had a long day as it was.
Here’s what he had to say-
“There are 2 water hazards south of airport on 494, should freeze over tonight. Looks like a truck broke through them. There are some thin snow spots but the lake effect on top is nice. Definitely not ideal, but gets better west and north”
Thanks Lane!!
Turbo should be done soon and I’ll have another update.
<>
This literally never happens! 2 of our groomers met at an intersection a bit ago. I promise I will have reports from both. They are on some LONG runs, pulling double duty before it gets busy. For sure better conditions west and north than south of Kinross and in the Soo. That much I can tell you with certainty. We are just on the edge of the lake effect today, so not much of anything is falling in the Soo yet, but I can see the bands just west.
We’ll have our 3rd machine out tonight too. Reports will come as I get them. Please watch for our groomers if you’re in our area! Lane is heading back to Kinross from south of the Spile Dam on 472, and Turbo is heading back to Raco on 480, from north of the Spile Dam.
Ride safe! Some hazards are around, and they are working on them.
<>
2/16- update. Quick look at how things are coming out with panning. Much more detail later on. Let’s give them a chance to set up, please.
<>
2/16 Good morning all! I show a solid 8” on the ground here in the Soo after what we got yesterday has settled. Light snow is falling now. A few more inches are expected today. I am still waiting to hear back from our groomer bosses, so I do not know if we will have groomers out panning yet or not. You often hear us and other clubs say that we need a foot or more to groom. This is because 10” of snow compresses to about an inch on the trail.
In areas where this is zero base, you can see why we would want more snow. Our Raco/Bay Mills area had a base left in many spots, so I can see this being the first area to be panned. Please give us the chance to assess and get out there. If you do ride, some throttle control goes a long way to helping preserve the surface. As always, ride safe and be prepared for what we would consider early season conditions.
🚨 As a reminder, trail 49 from Alberta Lane all the way to Gaines Hwy remains closed due to excessive water. Also, gates on trail 480 are also closed from the Spile Dam to Tilson Rd, but we’ll try to get those open once it’s panned to smooth the truck ruts🚨
SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/31 It’s a mixed bag of nuts around here. Where things are good, they are REALLY good! We just need to get to all areas and we are making progress. Beautiful images from Pat on the 494 loop this morning. Thank you, Pat! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo1231#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/31 Happy New Years Eve! Snow is ongoing in our area. I show around 3-4” new snow in the Soo so far, reports in Brimley of at least 7” new snow. A word of caution- we do not like to send groomers out during the day, but sometimes we do not have a choice. Kenny and Jim will be headed out to tackle 889 in the Bay Mills area around noon today. There are many trees down and heavy drifting. It will undoubtedly be a long run for them, and the main goal is to get things opened up. Pat is out early south of Kinross on 494. 472 west to Tilson should also be done today. As a reminder, we cannot groom past Tilson Rd on 472 due to construction equipment. Please be on the lookout for the groomers, and if you’re able to move small branches safely, we appreciate the help! Subscribe to Groomer Tracker to see where the groomers are in real time. Thank you! #soo ... See MoreSee Less

EASTERN U.P. UPDATE via Mackinac County Snowmobile Association >> Tuesday December 30 We really got the snow yeaterday. Cut river area seemed to be the winner with claims to 36 inches. St ignace received a foot or more and Trout lake closer to 2ft. With all that snow comes the fun stuff. We did pan what we could last night but had to turn around and could not make it into St ignace do to down trees. We will need a few days to get this storm cleaned up. It is passable to St Ignace by sled but ungroomed until clean up is done. So much snow came at once it will take several passes to get a good hard base again so please be patient with us for a few days while we get things in order. Use extreme caution while riding in our area as there still is branches in the trail. We will update as soon as conditions change. Thank you #soo #straitsarea #newberry #snowphotos... NEWBERRY AREA UPDATE via Curtis Area Trail Association >> We just went and opened the gates and took care of a few downed trees on our 45 Newberry trail. We have about 4” in Curtis and found close to 8” by the time we got to Newberry. It’s definitely rideable but watch for water holes and some rough spots.
Big thanks to the Fish and Hunt Shop for the sleds tonight!

NEWBERRY AREA UPDATE via Pine Stump >> About 4 inches of wet heavy snow so far. We are supposed to get some more today and tomorrow.
We had some snow survive up this way that froze up hard.
It’s spring conditions. If you want a bunch of miles stay home. I don’t know how the trails will be. If you want to ride some two tracks and stuff and put a few miles on I think you can. Trailer up to the snow.
Everyone in the area would love to see you. Need to take a chance once and awhile right?

NEWBERRY AREA UPDATE via TASA Tahquamenon Area Snowmobile Association >> The cool thing about this video is when I left to groom 9 Sunday night, we were still praying for the snow to hit, and I was just working on trail repair, before I got back from this 16hr 91.5 mile run, THIS is what I was working with!! 16 hours included cutting two downed 12-14" pines trees completely across and many other smaller and wind blown debris, lots of stops. I left green ribbons hanging in the spots I cut the two pines, worried about what I may have missed under the snow. Just careful. #newberry #snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
