Ironwood Trail Report – 12/29

IRONWOOD / WESTERN U.P. UPDATE via Gogebic Range Trail Authority – ORV & Snowmobile Club – 12/29

11S was groomed up last night by Mr. RYAN CHRISTIAN and SHAWN Swiontek, here’s some pictures of that trail. Trails will be much better today with good cold temps, get out and ride! The southern water hazard 4 miles north of the state line with WI broke open. It’s been very cold and we expect it to have refroze, but be advised it has opened and there are nearly no routes around it. The famous northern water hazard did not cause trouble for us! Still need more snow to finish burying hazards and filling in ruts. Stop into Earla’s in Marenisco for the best bloody and breakfast around!!

<>

Everything except 160 has been groomed. Our ratings are conservative so we hopefully never oversell what we have or are doing. Trails are icy, ride slowly, ride right and support our sponsors!
❄Trail 2 Hurley to Ramsay Crossing rated fair with good spots.
❄Trail 160 is not groomed due to lack of snow.
❄Trail 2 Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield rated poor, it’s just thin dropping down from Indianhead to Wakefield.
❄Trail 2 Wakefield to Marenisco rated fair with good spots.
❄Trail 8 Wakefield to Tula turnaround rated fair to good.
❄Trail 11 2-8 connector east of Wakefield rated fair to good.
❄Trail 11 south of Wakefield rated good with open water hazards.

WEATHER UPDATE via Midwest Weather >> ~(Updated) Snowfall Forecast Sunrise Sunday-Sunrise Tuesday~
A major winter storm is expected to bring significant snowfall to portions of the region. Most of the accumulating snow will be along and north of I-80. No matter how much snow will fall, there will be strong northwest winds that will create blowing and drifting snow. Travel north of I-80 will be near impossible at times. Some road closures are possible along and north of I-90 given greater accumulation and more persistent blizzard-like conditions. Heaviest snowfall totals through sunrise Tuesday (there will be more after) will be along Lake Superior. Snowfall rates could exceed 2" an hour at times due to lake enhancement. Expect over a foot in most areas along the lakeshore before dropping as you get closer to the WI border. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskey~OUTDATED~

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via Scott's Superior Inn and Cabins >> Ontonagon / Porcupine Mountains Snowmobile Trail Report
Up to 20” snow is coming!!
Went for a ride with my daughter on Christmas. Trails in the Ontonagon and Porcupine Mountains area are currently in early-season condition. Riders will find a mix of good and hazardous sections, so caution is strongly advised.
Conditions:
Some trails are riding well, especially in shaded and higher-elevation areas. Other sections have thin snow cover with exposed rocks and loose gravel—particularly on road crossings, waterways, and open areas.
Weather Impact:
A brief warm-up this weekend may soften the base and create additional hazards. Ride smart and adjust speeds accordingly.
Looking Ahead!!!
The good news—up to 20 inches of snow is forecasted for next week. If that materializes, trail conditions should improve dramatically and begin shaping up very nicely for the season.
Bottom line:
Early-season riding is possible, but expect variable conditions. Use caution, watch for hazards, and stay on marked trails. Much better riding is on the horizon once the next round of snow arrives.
Ride safe and stay tuned for updates. ❄️🏁 #ontonagon #westernup #snowphotos

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via North Country Snowmobile Club UP >> Good morning, Sled Heads. President Mac-Daddy and Mama Sledhead finally got out for our first joy ride yesterday. Our daughter came up north for the holidays and brought her better half. We took him for his first run ever and he LOVED it!
Thanks to Hamilton's North Coast Adventures for the great rental sleds for our family!
The trails are DEFINITELY in early season condition. Gale force winds last week scoured the lakeshore and all high ground trail is dirt or grass with thin snow in the dips. Ridable, but gritty.
Trail 11 was good, but deteriorating to slushy with the current temps.
Trail 102 was recently groomed and a great ride thanks to Gogebic Greg and Gogebic Area Grooming. Hanging brush and a couple downed trees are becoming exposed in the melt.
Trail 1 from Bergland to Silver City was in good condition.
Wet areas are reopening in this warm up. When you get to low-lying/wet areas, we recommend treating them as single file center only trail sections. If there is open water, and you are not comfortable crossing, please go around or turn around.
Colder weather and ❄️🌨️ is in the forecast. Get out there and do Heikki Lunta with us!! #ontonagon #westernup #snowphotosGood morning, Sled Heads. SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/28/25 5:30 PM update
Using this to gauge our starting point for the incoming storm here in the Soo. The location for this measurement is just off of trail 8 as you head west out of the Soo, about 3 miles from downtown. Lake effect snow can and does vary widely, so we appreciate any snow reports tomorrow and on.
We can hear the ice hitting the trees and hard surfaces currently. Businesses are closing early and some are already closing for tomorrow.
It appears that it will switch to snow around 10pm tonight when temps also start to drop.
PLEASE be safe. First responders are asking people not to travel unless absolutely necessary. #soo #soo1228 #snowphotos12/28/25 5:30 PM update

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/27/25
Good evening! I just got back from a ride from the Soo to Hulbert and back and the trails are very busy, as expected.
Unfortunately, grooming is on pause for us for a couple of reasons- 1) it’s too warm for it to make any difference whatsoever 2) we need more snow (and it’s coming!)
🚨 Please take note- the Pisten Bully that stays in Raco and does the Raco/Brimley/Bay Mills areas (8 west of Brimley, 480 from the Raco gate to 8, and 889) has a leaking hydraulic seal and had to be brought into the Soo barn tonight. We are awaiting the part and anticipate that it may be down until Tuesday🚨
Trails will be a bit sloppy with the warmer temps and higher traffic.
The snow is soft and corners are icy, so please be careful. We heard of 2 accidents today, unfortunately. We are hopeful that the riders are ok❤️‍🩹
Significant lake effect snow is expected tomorrow night into Tuesday, and we’ll roll groomers out as soon as it makes sense to do so.
Please ride safe, and ride sober. There are lots of families out there and we all need to work together to ensure we can all make it back safely.
Thanks all! Snow and colder temps are on the way and we’ll keep you posted! 🙌🏼❄️❄️❄️ #soo #snowphotos #soo1227

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/27/25
Good morning!
No real significant snow in our area yesterday, though we did pick up a general 4-5” inches over much of our area.
We did have groomers out yesterday in the Raco, Bay Mills, and Brimley areas, on 8, 889, and part of 480, as well as on trail 49 from the Soo to 12 mile, and also on 49 from Devils Hill to Kinross and the 494 loop. We skipped the thin section south of 12 to preserve the new snow and let riders pack it. City trails will be done tonight if needed, as well as trail 8 from the Soo to Brimley.
I’ll be going for a ride later today and I’ll report what I see.
Significant snow is forecasted for tomorrow through Tuesday, along with high winds so that could get interesting.
Remember, we are on Groomer Tracker, subscribe today!
Ride safe! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo
