WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Rain spreads into the UP this evening, transitioning to snow from west to east tonight. Snowfall rates of 0.5-1”/hr are possible late tonight into early Friday morning across the central UP, which will lead to hazardous travel as visibility drops as low as a quarter mile or less. GRAND MARAIS AREA UPDATE via Grand Marais Sno-Trails Assoc. >> What It Means to Be a Groomer for the Grand Marais Sno-Trails Association
Being a groomer is more than a job—it’s a commitment to community, safety, and the love of snowmobiling.
Our groomers are compensated at $2 per mile groomed, but the reality behind that number tells a much bigger story. Depending on the trail, a single grooming route can take 8 to 10 hours to complete. That time can vary due to necessary stops—clearing debris, addressing unexpected issues, carefully exiting the groomer when needed, and slowing or stopping entirely as snowmobilers pass by.
Grooming equipment moves at a steady 7 to 11 miles per hour, requiring patience, focus, and long hours in often challenging conditions.
While this is technically a paid position, our groomers do this work for something far more meaningful: their love of the sport and their dedication to our community. They balance grooming with full-time jobs, families, and personal commitments—choosing to sacrifice their time so the Crazy 8’s trails remain safe, rideable, and enjoyable for all of us.
