Ontonagon County Winter Update – January 19, 2025 ❄️
Good morning, Ontonagon County! With frigid temperatures today, remember it’s always warm and welcoming at Roxey’s. Here’s the latest on weather, snowmobile trails, the Porcupine Mountains Ski Area, and our pork-packed specials:
🌡️ Today’s Weather
Current Conditions: Mostly cloudy, 1°F (-17°C).
Forecast: Overcast, windy, and frigid with snow showers, accumulating 2-4 cm.
High: 3°F (-16°C) | Low: -3°F (-19°C).
Alert: An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect. Wind chills as low as -40°F (-40°C). Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Dress warmly and take precautions!

Trail Conditions: Trail conditions vary across Ontonagon County. Near the lakeshore, trails may be thin and icy, but inland trails are in good shape with a solid base forming. Ride with caution, especially near icy patches.

Groomers are on the trails today during daytime, please ride slowly today!!! We have 2 of 3 groomers online playing catch up. Trail 13 west of Rockland and trail 1 and 12 around White Pine will have active grooming in daytime. Stay safe with these cold temps and Groomer TC Troll Joe reports great fresh snow near our turn around in Greenland with The U.P. Superior Snowmobile Club . Good Morning!
Groomers were out all night. To see exactly where we groomed download the Groomer Tracker app and buy up our club! We are operating with one down groomer (2 of 3 online) so be prepared to see groomers in the morning and afternoons as we try to keep up with traffic. This is a free permit weekend, which is synonymous with heavy traffic. Ride Right. Ride early, trails will be very rough this afternoon due to temps and traffic. Heavy snow for days ahead with cold temps.

Trail 12 east to trail 13 in Greenland: GOOD Condition. Groomed two nights ago.

Trail 13 from 137 to trail 101: GOOD to VERY GOOD condition. Icy corners. Due to groomer schedule only 1 pass was made down the trail this morning

Shown below is the expected 24-hour snowfall accumulation from 7pm today through 7pm Friday, along with the 24-hour snowfall from 7am Saturday through 7am Sunday. The 12-hour "gap" in between those two periods is the lull between the two waves of snow, when not much is expected to happen. And the snowmelt from the warm spell today should largely have ceased by then. More snow is also expected after 7am on Sunday and even into Monday, but it's a bit too early to call the snow amounts for that time period. The entirety of 8w to Wakefield was opened up today.
No machine's were harmed in this process!
It's not the prettiest but we made 2 passes through each section that we've been holding off on.
We don't know if it will hold up but finger's crossed...

So we can protect our base, we will not be grooming Wednesday and Thursday during the warm up. The trails were in good condition before the warmth came in. With light traffic and a short duration we hope they hold up.
Still busy! Installed a temp culvert in the water hole pictured (before pic) just passed The Woodspur Road on Trail #12. THANK YOU WYATT!!!
Prepping Pisten Bully 19 for some necessary maintenance.
Keep your fingers crossed for colder weather and more snow!!

Riders who know the Ontonagon area remember the pain of the west-side reroute the last couple years… but the original Trail 12 heading west out of Ontonagon is open and riding better than ever! Flat, smooth, and fast. Of course, when I went out yesterday, I couldn’t help but do a little Boondocking down the forest roads, but that’s a post for another time 😉
If you’re riding the western UP, Scott’s Superior Inn & Cabins sits right on Trail 12 — easy access, warm rooms, and a complimentary hot breakfast to fuel the next ride. 🛷❄️
