KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Snowmobile Club >> 01/30
Our trails took a BEATING today with the warm up, we have a full team headed out to hit everything and get it flattened back out for everyone. Please keep in mind we are seeing 100s of sleds on our grooming runs in the middle of the night – this gives very little time for things to set up. Give the guys a wave if you see them out!
Thanks,
The KSC Board of Directors

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Western UP Trail Reports >> 01/30
Thursday January 30th
Let Toivola around 10 this morning and trail 3 was already showing those nasty moguls. Trail 13 from Greenland to trail 137 was rough but it’s been over 24hrs since the last groom. Trail 137 was was and flat with maybe 2 little ripples. Trail 3 back north is getting ugly quick. There’s a lot of traffic for a Thursday.

WEATHER UPDATE via Midwest Weather >> ~(Updated) Snowfall Forecast Sunrise Sunday-Sunrise Tuesday~ A major winter storm is expected to bring significant snowfall to portions of the region. Most of the accumulating snow will be along and north of I-80. No matter how much snow will fall, there will be strong northwest winds that will create blowing and drifting snow. Travel north of I-80 will be near impossible at times. Some road closures are possible along and north of I-90 given greater accumulation and more persistent blizzard-like conditions. Heaviest snowfall totals through sunrise Tuesday (there will be more after) will be along Lake Superior. Snowfall rates could exceed 2" an hour at times due to lake enhancement. Expect over a foot in most areas along the lakeshore before dropping as you get closer to the WI border. #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea#gaylord#cadillac#benzie#traversecity#petoskey~OUTDATED~

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Alright Michigan.. Let's dive right back into it. Let's dive right back into it. We have yet another system coming our way for Sunday into Monday which will bring SEVERAL different impacts to portions of the state.
Let's start with JUST SUNDAY. This system begins as rain Sunday morning for lower Michigan, with a bit of mixed precipitation possible further north.. think near Mackinac areas.
Sunday afternoon, we will see an uptick in rainfall intensity and even see some thunderstorms across central and southern lower Michigan, with a severe weather risk sitting just off to our south during the afternoon. During this Sunday afternoon period, snow will also begin to ramp up in the Upper Peninsula while northern lower Michigan and the eastern UP will continue to see a mixed precipitation.
Sunday night is when things start to get wild. Temperatures across lower Michigan will drop from 40s and 50s down to the 20s in a matter of 2-4 hours. Keep in mind, it will be raining prior to this temperature drop, so a situation may unfold where wet surfaces will freeze over and become icy. This could be another scenario of what we call a flash freeze.
This concludes SUNDAY'S "part 1" forecast.
This system WILL CONTINUE into MONDAY as a lake effect snow AND wind event.
After midnight and into Monday morning, lake effect snow will ramp up across much of the state, with wind gusts also increasing to 40-50+mph across ALL of Michigan. Major snow accumulations are possible for lake effect belts of western and northern lower Michigan, and much of the UP during Monday. Given strong winds, lake effect bands and snow squalls will likely drift into eastern Michigan which may lightly accumulate in localized areas. A winter storm watch is already in effect for nearly ALL of the UP in anticipation of this system.
In summary, this is a two part system spanning 48+ hours with A LOT going on. We will host a live briefing tonight at 7pm to talk it through.
Expect a full forecast package to be released throughout tomorrow which will likely include first call graphics for:

Tired of seeing these beautiful trails yet? We sure aren’t! Thank you Warren! Looking beautiful in the Raco and Bay Mills area, as always! ❄❄❄
SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/27/25 Good evening! I just got back from a ride from the Soo to Hulbert and back and the trails are very busy, as expected. Unfortunately, grooming is on pause for us for a couple of reasons- 1) it’s too warm for it to make any difference whatsoever 2) we need more snow (and it’s coming!) 🚨 Please take note- the Pisten Bully that stays in Raco and does the Raco/Brimley/Bay Mills areas (8 west of Brimley, 480 from the Raco gate to 8, and 889) has a leaking hydraulic seal and had to be brought into the Soo barn tonight. We are awaiting the part and anticipate that it may be down until Tuesday🚨 Trails will be a bit sloppy with the warmer temps and higher traffic. The snow is soft and corners are icy, so please be careful. We heard of 2 accidents today, unfortunately. We are hopeful that the riders are ok❤️🩹 Significant lake effect snow is expected tomorrow night into Tuesday, and we’ll roll groomers out as soon as it makes sense to do so. Please ride safe, and ride sober. There are lots of families out there and we all need to work together to ensure we can all make it back safely. Thanks all! Snow and colder temps are on the way and we’ll keep you posted! 🙌🏼❄️❄️❄️ #soo #snowphotos#soo1227... See MoreSee Less

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/27/25 Good morning! No real significant snow in our area yesterday, though we did pick up a general 4-5” inches over much of our area. We did have groomers out yesterday in the Raco, Bay Mills, and Brimley areas, on 8, 889, and part of 480, as well as on trail 49 from the Soo to 12 mile, and also on 49 from Devils Hill to Kinross and the 494 loop. We skipped the thin section south of 12 to preserve the new snow and let riders pack it. City trails will be done tonight if needed, as well as trail 8 from the Soo to Brimley. I’ll be going for a ride later today and I’ll report what I see. Significant snow is forecasted for tomorrow through Tuesday, along with high winds so that could get interesting. Remember, we are on Groomer Tracker, subscribe today! Ride safe! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo ... See MoreSee Less

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/26/25 Good morning, all! We hope you had a wonderful Christmas! Our wish has been granted and snow has returned! How much we will get remains to be seen, but sounds like 6” for our general area by tomorrow, then more later in the weekend. Our Raco crew is out on the 889 loop as I type this, and we’ll update once groomers are able to roll out in other areas. As a reminder- trail 472 from Tilson Rd all the way to the Raco gate on 480 has lots of heavy equipment and a partially plowed road in there with exposed rocks due to bridge construction. We are advising that you stay out of there for now please. We cannot groom it either. See the pinned post for more info and for the exact location. Also see the post from yesterday for the trouble spots on trail 49. All other trails have good coveage and a solid base. This new snow will only help. As always, we will keep you posted! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo ... See MoreSee Less

FROM Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/25/25 We hope you’re having a great Christmas! Trails are pretty hard packed and icy in spots, and we definitely need snow. Big thanks to rider Chuck for sending us these pics. These are the worst of the worst spots on our trail system right now. This is trail 49 south of the Soo, north of Kinross. He said that overall the trail is pretty fair with the exception of these spots. These are the usual trouble spots in the early season. However, we normally can’t even groom this trail until mid January so we are pleased to be ahead of the game. If we get the new snow that’s forecasted, these areas will easily be filled in. Always important to share the bad spots too, so we appreciate the pics Chuck! We’ll keep you updated as snow returns tomorrow into the weekend. ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo2 #snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
