SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 03/12
Hi all!
Bill ran the M42 route this morning (480 to 8 to Ranger Road, and 889).
Here’s what he had to say-
“I groomed route M42 this morning. The trails are holding up good, but the signs not so good. I had to fix a STOP sign and corresponding STOP AHEAD sign on the trail to the Bay Mills Casino. Both signs had broken posts and there were tracks indicating they were both run over by snowmobiles.
The only real area of concern is that there are some pretty big holes and ruts in the corners on the winding section of trail 889 that are getting real hard to fill in. Not 100% sure, but I think some of the worst ruts might be from UTV traffic.”
We have seen an increase in ORV traffic for sure. It’s an issue every March and all we can do is hope that law enforcement will make contact and more importantly, hope that nobody gets hurt.

Good morning! Sugar Island Chris and Karen ran the Soo to Kinross route, trail 49, very early this morning and said that it’s hard and flat. He pulled in what snow he could and there’s supposed to be a little on the way which will help with the road crossings and shoulders since we have cold temps for now. Still no real signs of water as we have had really cold nights but we know things will start opening up quickly. Please watch for changing conditions, especially on trail 49 as most of this trail follows wet areas. Temps will be cold the next couple of days, then back into the high 30s beginning Wednesday and through the end of the month. A reminder, if your sled breaks down, please move it off of the trail. There was one left in the middle of the trail and it is not easy for us to maneuver the groomer and drag around it. They had to stop and get out and move it. They were greeted by our local flock of turkeys when they got back to the barn. Bring on the late season snow! Enjoy while you can! ❄️❄️❄️
SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/21/26 Good morning! Bryan and his son Logan hit the city trails last night and also 49 down to 7 mile and they turned out great! The little streams behind Kewadin Casino are still flowing (see the video in the comments) even with all of the cold, but our bridges have made a huge difference in there! There is one spot along the Kewadin trail that is soft and we keep filling it in as best we can. Likely a nonissue for the weight of a sled, but worth mentioning. Thank you Bryan and Logan!!❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0121b#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/21/26 Good evening! Groomer Pat hit the Kinross east loop this evening. This is 49 south of M80 and the 494 loop (one of my favorites!) Looking beautiful! Thank you Pat! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0121#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/20/26 Good evening! Brimley Bill brought the Pisten Bully in to the Soo barn from Raco via trail 8 and groomed along the way. After 6”+ of new snow yesterday, the berms at the road crossings needed to be cleared. He did a great job and the trail is flat, wide, and beautiful tonight! The Bully is in for a thaw and an oil change and it’ll be back out to Raco tomorrow night. Thanks Bill! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0120b#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
