Lake Gogebic Area Trail Report – 01/06

LAKE GOGEBIC AREA UPDATE via Gogebic Area Grooming – 01/06

Marenisco crews out tonight trying to work with what we have. Worked Trail 1 between Marenisco north to Copps Tower Rd. The inside corners of many curves had snow bermed up to the outside exposing ice, dirt, and gravel. Knocked down the berms and rolled them to the inside and packed as best as possible. With the cold tonight it shouldn’t take too long to get everything hardened up.

We might get a small bit of lake effect snow tonight/tomorrow which will help but overall, Trail 1 is in fair to good condition with the worst part being Ethelwood Grade which was recently plowed for logging. It’s snow covered but thin with exposed gravel in some areas.

Keep doing the snow dances folks, possible system bringing snow later this week into the weekend!

WEATHER UPDATE via Midwest Weather >> ~(Updated) Snowfall Forecast Sunrise Sunday-Sunrise Tuesday~
A major winter storm is expected to bring significant snowfall to portions of the region. Most of the accumulating snow will be along and north of I-80. No matter how much snow will fall, there will be strong northwest winds that will create blowing and drifting snow. Travel north of I-80 will be near impossible at times. Some road closures are possible along and north of I-90 given greater accumulation and more persistent blizzard-like conditions. Heaviest snowfall totals through sunrise Tuesday (there will be more after) will be along Lake Superior. Snowfall rates could exceed 2" an hour at times due to lake enhancement. Expect over a foot in most areas along the lakeshore before dropping as you get closer to the WI border. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskey~(Updated) Snowfall Forecast Sunrise Sunday-Sunrise Tuesday~

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via Scott's Superior Inn and Cabins >> Ontonagon / Porcupine Mountains Snowmobile Trail Report
Up to 20” snow is coming!!
Went for a ride with my daughter on Christmas. Trails in the Ontonagon and Porcupine Mountains area are currently in early-season condition. Riders will find a mix of good and hazardous sections, so caution is strongly advised.
Conditions:
Some trails are riding well, especially in shaded and higher-elevation areas. Other sections have thin snow cover with exposed rocks and loose gravel—particularly on road crossings, waterways, and open areas.
Weather Impact:
A brief warm-up this weekend may soften the base and create additional hazards. Ride smart and adjust speeds accordingly.
Looking Ahead!!!
The good news—up to 20 inches of snow is forecasted for next week. If that materializes, trail conditions should improve dramatically and begin shaping up very nicely for the season.
Bottom line:
Early-season riding is possible, but expect variable conditions. Use caution, watch for hazards, and stay on marked trails. Much better riding is on the horizon once the next round of snow arrives.
Ride safe and stay tuned for updates. ❄️🏁 #ontonagon #westernup #snowphotos

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via North Country Snowmobile Club UP >> Good morning, Sled Heads. President Mac-Daddy and Mama Sledhead finally got out for our first joy ride yesterday. Our daughter came up north for the holidays and brought her better half. We took him for his first run ever and he LOVED it!
Thanks to Hamilton's North Coast Adventures for the great rental sleds for our family!
The trails are DEFINITELY in early season condition. Gale force winds last week scoured the lakeshore and all high ground trail is dirt or grass with thin snow in the dips. Ridable, but gritty.
Trail 11 was good, but deteriorating to slushy with the current temps.
Trail 102 was recently groomed and a great ride thanks to Gogebic Greg and Gogebic Area Grooming. Hanging brush and a couple downed trees are becoming exposed in the melt.
Trail 1 from Bergland to Silver City was in good condition.
Wet areas are reopening in this warm up. When you get to low-lying/wet areas, we recommend treating them as single file center only trail sections. If there is open water, and you are not comfortable crossing, please go around or turn around.

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Alright Michigan.. Let's dive right back into it. We have yet another system coming our way for Sunday into Monday which will bring SEVERAL different impacts to portions of the state... #miweather #keweenaw #westernupAlright Michigan.. Let's dive right back into it. We have yet another system coming our way for Sunday into Monday which will bring SEVERAL different impacts to portions of the state.

Let's start with JUST SUNDAY. This system begins as rain Sunday morning for lower Michigan, with a bit of mixed precipitation possible further north.. think near Mackinac areas.

Sunday afternoon, we will see an uptick in rainfall intensity and even see some thunderstorms across central and southern lower Michigan, with a severe weather risk sitting just off to our south during the afternoon. During this Sunday afternoon period, snow will also begin to ramp up in the Upper Peninsula while northern lower Michigan and the eastern UP will continue to see a mixed precipitation.

Sunday night is when things start to get wild. Temperatures across lower Michigan will drop from 40s and 50s down to the 20s in a matter of 2-4 hours. Keep in mind, it will be raining prior to this temperature drop, so a situation may unfold where wet surfaces will freeze over and become icy. This could be another scenario of what we call a flash freeze.

This concludes SUNDAY'S "part 1" forecast.

This system WILL CONTINUE into MONDAY as a lake effect snow AND wind event.

After midnight and into Monday morning, lake effect snow will ramp up across much of the state, with wind gusts also increasing to 40-50+mph across ALL of Michigan. Major snow accumulations are possible for lake effect belts of western and northern lower Michigan, and much of the UP during Monday. Given strong winds, lake effect bands and snow squalls will likely drift into eastern Michigan which may lightly accumulate in localized areas. A winter storm watch is already in effect for nearly ALL of the UP in anticipation of this system.

In summary, this is a two part system spanning 48+ hours with A LOT going on. We will host a live briefing tonight at 7pm to talk it through.

Expect a full forecast package to be released throughout tomorrow which will likely include first call graphics for:

-Snowfall totals
-Rainfall amounts
-Thunderstorm/Severe weather outlook
-Wind map
-Icing amounts

And infographics on:

-Potential flash freeze
-Snow squalls
-Power outage possibilities
-Timing map
-Traffic map

Stay tuned!

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via North Country Snowmobile Club UP >> Merry Christmas sledheads! Good news, bad news on our system. Wyatt and Jay put on their capes yesterday and opened Trail #12 from Potato Farm Rd. to Greenland!! The trail was filled and groomed. The warm temps have not allowed the freezing necessary so we still have early season conditions, ride with caution.
We have 35 degrees with drizzle in White Pine as I type this report. The forecast suggests no temps below 32 until Sunday evening, accompanied by some much needed snow.
Due to the forecast, as of now, we will be discontinuing grooming operations until Sunday evening.

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

#lakegogebicGood morning and welcome to Peak kickoff week in the western UP!
Quick update on weather & road conditions for snowmobilers traveling today:

⚠️ It’s pure ice everywhere. Black ice is extremely bad and roads are very slick.
We’re already up and assisting one of our customers who is currently stuck at the bottom of a hill on Eastshore Road, right between Camp 6 and Stagecoach, coming off M64, with a truck and trailer. Snowmobiles are currently being unloaded at the bottom of the hill to lighten the load and (hopefully) get them out of this slippery situation.

If you’re traveling to The Root Cellar, please use extreme caution in this area—there is no alternate route around it.
We can’t comment on road conditions outside this area—this update applies specifically to Eastshore Road on Lake Gogebic, especially the hills coming into The Root Cellar. Traction is extremely poor.

Stay safe, everyone!

LAKE GOGEBIC AREA UPDATE via Gogebic Area Grooming >> Bergland Area Groomer's report for your Christmas Day.. (evening) 12-25-25..
Mixed bag of good and bad tonight. 102 was groomed and is improving with each pass. 13n groomed from M28 to 101 and is in good condition. 1n also was groomed and in good condition.
8w was groomed but we had a machine break through a new section of Ice.
8w is 💯 passable by sled but not by a groomer in certain sections. We'll continue to cover 8w where we can until it freezes in tighter. Lastly but not least, as our guy's were getting in tonight it was freezing rain out. (That's not a bad thing) However it makes everything slippery. 🤞it switches over to snow and we get a couple inches to pack in. That's all we got for now. Sault Ste. Marie Area Trail Report – 01/06

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/6/25 6:30 pm update on the water hole near the tunnel on city trail 49!

Pete and Jay formulated a plan to seal this bugger up, and I’d say it was a huge success! They met after work, grabbed the tractor from the barn, which is thankfully really close to where this hole was. They worked carefully to pack the hole with snow, then used the drag to smooth it over. Like it never even happened! Currently 15 degrees and going down to single digits tonight so it’ll freeze up nicely. We shouldn’t see this again til April.

Thanks guys! You rock!

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 01/06

1/6/25 – Had a few questions regarding the ice on the bay in Bay Mills/Brimley area. It is NOT safe. Please take trail 8. Thanks!

🚨🚨Please watch for the water hole near the tunnel on the city trails. It opened up again. Sleds were getting around it ok and we’ll do what we can to pack it and help it freeze. Just a heads up! 🚨🚨

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 01/05

1/5/25 8:30 PM update
Run down of where we are at. Like all of you, I’m a rider too and I try my best to give you accurate info. I realize everyone has a different perspective of what is good and bad. I feel like I’m pretty fair, and often times more critical of our trails because I want to be as honest as possible. So here we go-

The Soo definitely got the most out of the lake effect snow event from Thursday to this morning. Not as much west or south of us on our trail system.

Trail 8 from the Soo to Raco gets thinner as you head west to about a mile or two west of Irish Line, then sees a bit more coverage as you approach the 480 intersection. Open areas saw snow get blown off the trail, and our operators use the blade as best they can to pull snow in from the sides. There are some thin areas, most notably just west of 6 Mile where those doggone slag rocks are popping up for about 100 feet. I stop and toss them off when I see them. We’ll try to pick the drag up in that section to keep them from pulling up. More snow will bury them back up.
8 on the powerline to Ranger Rd had more snow on it than I expected and is great.

889 is also great.

Met some of our other volunteers for a ride today coming from Kinross. They took 472 to 480 to 8 and they said it was good. A few ruts left from some wheeled vehicles during the warm up. Nothing major.

Rider reports from 49 south of M80 and the 494 loop reported both as excellent.

The city trails, with the exception of 449 and the now closed Kewadin trail are also in good shape. Pete is out there now, and will have a report for us that I’ll share.

I’m going to pin the post about 449 and the Kewadin Trail for easy reference.

49 from Alberta Ln south of the DonDee Lanes (great food!) remains ungroomed. Lots of wet spots still. The cold weather should do the trick and allow it to freeze up nicely. We’ll run it as soon as it makes sense to do so. It is ungroomed from there to Gaines Hwy in Kinross. Sleds have been riding it, but you need to know it’s at your own risk, and is likely very rough.
Overall, we could use more snow to freshen up most areas, but things overall are good with some fair areas, and some excellent areas!

I hope that helps! Ride safe! ❄❄❄

<>

1/5/25
Good morning all!

Brimley Bill headed out very early this morning in the Bay Mills and Raco area on part of 480, the powerline, and 889. Here’s his report-

“I groomed the Powerline and the Mission Hill Loop early this morning. There’s still some wind, but not as strong as yesterday. Open areas still have some drifting.

I was able smooth out all the chatter from traffic and drifts.
I got out early enough so that the trail had some time to set up before any sled traffic.

The trails are in really good shape.”

Thanks Bill! Have a great ride everyone! ❄❄❄

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/27/25
Good morning!
No real significant snow in our area yesterday, though we did pick up a general 4-5” inches over much of our area.
We did have groomers out yesterday in the Raco, Bay Mills, and Brimley areas, on 8, 889, and part of 480, as well as on trail 49 from the Soo to 12 mile, and also on 49 from Devils Hill to Kinross and the 494 loop. We skipped the thin section south of 12 to preserve the new snow and let riders pack it. City trails will be done tonight if needed, as well as trail 8 from the Soo to Brimley.
I’ll be going for a ride later today and I’ll report what I see.
Significant snow is forecasted for tomorrow through Tuesday, along with high winds so that could get interesting.
Remember, we are on Groomer Tracker, subscribe today!
Ride safe! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/26/25
Good morning, all! We hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
Our wish has been granted and snow has returned! How much we will get remains to be seen, but sounds like 6” for our general area by tomorrow, then more later in the weekend. Our Raco crew is out on the 889 loop as I type this, and we’ll update once groomers are able to roll out in other areas.
As a reminder- trail 472 from Tilson Rd all the way to the Raco gate on 480 has lots of heavy equipment and a partially plowed road in there with exposed rocks due to bridge construction. We are advising that you stay out of there for now please. We cannot groom it either. See the pinned post for more info and for the exact location.
Also see the post from yesterday for the trouble spots on trail 49.
All other trails have good coveage and a solid base. This new snow will only help.
As always, we will keep you posted! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

FROM Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/25/25
We hope you’re having a great Christmas! Trails are pretty hard packed and icy in spots, and we definitely need snow.
Big thanks to rider Chuck for sending us these pics. These are the worst of the worst spots on our trail system right now. This is trail 49 south of the Soo, north of Kinross. He said that overall the trail is pretty fair with the exception of these spots.
These are the usual trouble spots in the early season. However, we normally can’t even groom this trail until mid January so we are pleased to be ahead of the game.
If we get the new snow that’s forecasted, these areas will easily be filled in.
Always important to share the bad spots too, so we appreciate the pics Chuck!
We’ll keep you updated as snow returns tomorrow into the weekend. ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo2 #snowphotos

Can we expect any significant lake effect between now and New Year's?
