HEAVY LAKE EFFECT SNOW IN THE FORECAST for Christmas….
Locally heavy lake effect snow is possible late Sunday night into late Monday night in the snowbelts of eastern upper and northern lower Michigan. A few spots could see total accumulations exceed a foot during this time. Some blowing and drifting of snow will occur, mainly in exposed locations. FREDERIC / GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic – Not a flake of new snow overnight. There was light sled traffic around Frederic and I had a few in here. One guy told me the best riding they had was north of Gaylord on 7 on up to the Thirsty Sturgeon in Wolverine. There were 3 sleds at the gas station when I got here this morning and a three guys from down by the Ohio line that had unloaded out back here. They said that was there first time in this area. I would say my rating on what we have out there is maybe a hair above poor to fair. There is no grooming yet but 2 riders told me they saw a groomer panning on 76. I forgot to put a shout out yesterday from Jerry in Metamora to Cathy who was at home reading my updates. Weather is still calling for snow each day thru next Thursday, now they just need to come thru with it. Grayling Motels were pretty empty, 3 trailers at Ramada and zero at days in this morn. Thursday ~ Dec. 21st @ 9:02 AM ~ In an around the Gaylord Area we have about 8 to 10 inches of snow in the woods. Grooming is not being done at this time – need more snow. Trails are in “POOR” condition. As always please check back here for updates.
FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> Not liking the weather forcast for the rest of the week and coming weekend. Ended up closed again yesterday as there was another blessing of 6 inches of snow and we took off on another great ride of untouched snow, leaving Frederic and up towards mount Frederic and lakes of the north to starvation lake and back to Frederic. Lunch at the hide away and back to Frederic. About 150 miles of prime riding between sunday and monday. Sundays ride took us to lovells for a great pizza. Now time to get to real work today. Pics below are of the Jordan Valley groomers with a giant project on the trail. The guys were there to get the track back on the groomer. The better timing for any ice will be Tuesday AM and south of M-32. Also watch for foggy conditions too. Remember that 32° is the key temperature not only at the surface, but in the vertical. JORDAN VALLEY AREA UPDATE via Jordan Valley Trails Council >> Thank you to Kalkaska County Sand and Snow - KCSAS and Rick for contacting us when they heard of our breakdown. Within 24 hours of breakdown and recovery we had a track from the blade of the KCSAS machine to the blade of our machine! Today the crew tackled putting the track on the machine and made quick work of it! Can’t thank our retired groomer/board member Doug for jumping into action to help out today! Mike, Phil, Doug, Benny, Rich, Pete and Tom were all hands on deck and we appreciate each of them and their efforts! The last 72 hours has been a great team effort by everyone that helped out. THANK YOU! We’re monitoring the weather this week and will take grooming day by day until the end of the week. Looks like Thursday/Friday will be our worse days with temps at or near 40, but the crews are in order to get everything groomed for the weekend after temps drop back down. JORDAN VALLEY AREA UPDATE via Jordan Valley Trails Council >> What a week it’s turned out to be! Can’t thank all our volunteers for hitting the trails hard this week and fixing random issues that popped up with trails and machines. Friday was the first day we’ve had all 3 machines up and running, which didn’t last long. What a day today was! We had a track the belts let loose and stranded a volunteer on the trail. Quickly some phone calls were made and we had 5 people converging to head out and rescue. Soon after I called Kevin grooming in the 6215R and told him we had a problem and he said I’m in. As he got back from grooming the North 10 and Jordan Valley, we quickly unhooked the drag, got our work tractor fired up and we were off. After we arrived we assessed the situation and came up with a game plan to get the machine moved off the trail, which was a home run, couldn’t have went any better! Thanks to Mike, Phil (and those that rescued him from the trail so he could go get warmer work clothes and rushed right back), Kevin, Scott, Frank and the other Phil who had a “back ache” and couldn’t attend the festivities 😁. Hats off to the multiple groups that stopped and asked if we needed anything and Chris P’s group that helped us get the heavy track into our loader. Can’t thank all these people enough for their efforts today! Many text and phone calls once we were out of the woods and our friends at Kalkaska County Sand and Snow - KCSAS called us and said, we have a track, come get it! Tomorrow we will be heading to meet Rick and picking up a track to get us back on the trail! We can’t thank our friends and neighbors enough for quickly getting with us when they knew we were down. Plan is to get the machine back up and running Monday! Hoping by Tuesday evening we’ll have all our trails back into shape as all you riders expect! Thank you for your patience. 🚧If you’re in the area of Mancelona Road / Sand Lake Road please be cautious as the machine will be there another day. 🚧 On a high note, trails are great right now for the recent weather! Hopefully this weeks warm up won’t hurt too bad and will tighten up all this new lake effect snow and make trails even better for the weekend when temps drop back down! **this is the “fun” stuff that happens all over the state that volunteers do everyday.
