Paradise Area Trail Report – 01/07

January 7, 2018

18 degrees this morning and snowing. Picked up about an inch last night and it looks like its gonna snow most of the day. The weather guessers are calling for 3-6. I know ya`ll are itching to hear how it went yesterday in the swamp so here it goes……

The boys made it through without too much trouble. The water holes weren`t quite as deep as expected, probably cause of all the cold temps, but it is NOT RIDABLE YET!!! It is muddy in there. There is a gate on the south entrance that is CLOSED. Do NOT go around this gate. If you do you will get muddy and probably stuck and we will NOT come and rescue you. There is no gate on the north side but we are gonna go down and put up caution tape. DO NOT go under this or you will end up same as above. We will go back in there in a day or two…..we want to let it set up for a bit. The snow today will help. Let me explain something to you. If you go in there and tear it up trying to get thru you will be hurting the progress. Just stay out for a few more days….PLEASE. Our goal is to open it up by the end of the week. The rest of the trail from the river mouth to the Silver Creek is pretty good. Couple small water spots but we`ll clear them up fast. The Federal Forest section from the Creek to Lakeshore is pretty good also. We left the gates open on that section but just be careful, there are a couple small wet spots in there to watch out for.

I did get to talk to Groomer Don yesterday afternoon about the Point Trails. He said there was alot of trees down and a few wet spots but he got`em all cleared up. I got the feeling he`ll be runnin in there with a drag today but don`t take my word on this.

So….all good news today…..how bout dat!!!

Groomer Chris

Frederic / Gaylord Area Trail Report – Sledheads of Frederic – 01/07

It’s a comfy 18 degrees out there and a nice morning for a ride. Sleds have been thru already along with other riders loaded up and heading home. We still need more snow and I didn’t like the weather forcasts I see for later this week as there were 30s and even a 40 in there.

Hopefully the weatherman is wrong as temps like that will hurt us really fast. Trailer counts still low this morning with 6 at Days Inn and only 4 at Ramada. As I drove thru grayling this morning there was a trailer in front of me with one of my big Sledheads decals on it.

I had about 100 of those big decals and they pretty much were all gone after last weekend so hopefully there will be a lot more trailers out there with those on.

The grayling groomers were having trouble last night with ice forming up in their tracks and they had to go in early which was still 7 p.m. Those volunteers are tough and determined as they made it back to the barn and worked late getting the ice out of the tracks and they are back out and grooming this morning so that is Great. Be sure to give them a big thumbs up when you see them on the trails. I had to go up by Mancelona to show a house to some prospective home buyers and afterwards we stopped at the Green Lantern in Alba. Packed full of sleds there and it certainly looked like more snow up there. That’s the first time I have been in there in I would say 15 years. In Mancelona they had sled drag racing going on. While it was pretty much over when I got there the pits were packed with trailers and sleds. Some very cool race sleds there and pics below will show. Reminded me of the old MSDRA (Michigan Snowmobile Drag Racing Association) days. I used to be at every race 20 some years ago and we raced all over the state. Was a ton of fun and great people whom I am still friends with and always happy to see. When I got back here to Frederic last night I had just missed out on the big police chase here by minutes. I am sure I will hear more on this but apparently the cops chased a sled this way from waters and he flew into town here and around the swamp and headed back north towards Gaylord with a lot of cops on his tail and then just north of Frederic DNR coming from Gaylord blocked the trail where he finally gave in and they cuffed him and took him away. I saw a pic that someone had showed me of him cuffed standing over his sled. So moral of the story is don’t ride the tracks and don’t run from the cops….Thanks for checking in. Pete
