SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 02/27
Good evening all!
I took a ride on my sled from the Soo out to Pickles Bar & Grill (another one of our awesome map sponsors!) for a friends birthday dinner tonight.
I’ve put nearly 800 miles on my sled in the past week in the central and eastern UP and I thoroughly enjoyed all of them but I have to say, there’s no place like home. Maybe it’s because I personally know our volunteers and how much care and dedication we all put into every single inch of our trail system. Or maybe it’s just my love and pride for our community and my belief that what we do contributes to the well being of my friends and neighbors. Either way, it truly makes me happy to ride our trails.
Snow started falling while we ate dinner and by the time I left, it was really coming down. I took my time on my return trip down 8, admiring how well it’s holding up and decided to take a spin around the city trails so that I could give you guys an update. I checked Ashmun Bay where the semi was stuck earlier and I wouldn’t even have known it was there if I hadn’t seen the pics myself. Very smooth after Tom worked his magic in there. It was a quick 40 miles but I only saw 2 sleds the entire trip. I absolutely love our low weekday traffic after seeing how busy things are to our west. There were some pretty big drifts along the airport (those were super fun on my return trip🤣 ) and everything is holding up really great. With the 4-8” or more of snow that we are getting tonight, things will only improve. A few icy corners on 49 between the tunnel hill and Ashmun Creek Hill but the new snow will help take care of those. I believe Bryan hits the city trails tomorrow night.
If you’ve never ridden here, I encourage you to book soon. Things are really in excellent condition. Come and enjoy what we work hard to create and maintain and support the local businesses that support us.
Hats off to all of our volunteers and your endless efforts. It is truly evident how much this trail system is cared for.
Have a good night all and enjoy the fresh snow! ❄️❄️❄️

Good morning all!
Groomer Pete was out on the city trails last night. Here’s his report from his run-
“I groomed the City trails tonight. Tonight I realized it was light out when I started at 6 pm. A sobering reminder that the winter is in its twilight. It’s my third groom of the week. Do you ever feel like you live in a groomer? Overall, I think our entire trails system is great. I think I rode all of them this week on my sled, and I couldn’t be more pleased. It’s always refreshing to come home to my home trails after a long ride. It’s almost a guarantee that two or more groomers are out every night. The Chippewa trails were in good shape this weekend too, so props to them for their work.
I’d like to take a moment to appreciate the hard work of some people that get little to no recognition for keeping this circus moving. Mike our groomer coordinator, Dave the Raco regional assistant director of supervising the groomers to support the groomer coordinator, Tom our president, and our groomer maintenance guy Buck. Buck works nearly full time all year on the 4 machines and the barn. Tool management, parts ordering, repairs, maintenance, getting fuel delivered, ordering propane fills, welding……the list of things Buck does could go on for pages. Without those four guys, the hooligan groomers would probably self destruct.
Enjoy the trails while they are good!”
More snow if on the way tonight with the possibility of some freezing rain/ice. We’ll update on how that turns out but shouldn’t really hurt us as the trails are in great shape.

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Two forecasts for today, January 13th, 2026, and Wednesday, January 14th, 2026, regarding system snow, then lake effect snow. Graphic #1 A clipper moves through today, bringing rain/freezing drizzle to portions of northern Michigan and the UP, especially north of M-55, with some light rain as far south as I-94. This will change over to a rain/snow mix later this afternoon and evening. Brief accumulation amounts will generally be in the T-1" range, although a couple spots could exceed 1", which are areas highlighted by the 1-3" zone. Air temperatures today will generally be at or above freezing in the UP, but evaporative cooling will still keep the ground cooler than the air. Graphic #2 Lake effect snow ramps up beyond midnight tonight, heading into tomorrow, the 14th. Early indications are that the central UP will see the most with flow directly out of the north. Areas of 2-5" and 4-8" have been displayed as a result for much of the Lake Superior shoreline region to account for this flow. The LP is still a little on the uncertain side for overachievers tomorrow. We are watching the usual Gaylord region, but also immediate shoreline areas of Lake Michigan from Traverse City down to New Buffalo, and the thumb, as continued flow out of the north seems like on Thursday. For now, totals will remain as shown, and our last call for tomorrow will be out early in the morning. Inland areas in the T-1" zone may also see slight improvements if balloon launch data today continues to trend in the right direction. Timing for both days is for the entirety of both days, as precipitation will be on-and-off throughout the next 48 hours. Travel concerns will generally be on the mild side of things, but don't let that fool you. Drive with care no matter what's falling out there. Follow us here at Michigan Storm Chasers for updates throughout the next couple days as the snow falls. #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#munising #newberry #soo #gaylord... See MoreSee Less

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Mixed precipitation, mainly of rain and snow, will spread west to east across the UP tonight into tomorrow morning. Pockets of freezing rain could also mix in at onset and lead to a light glaze of ice on roadways for the Tuesday morning commute. Heavy lake effect snow will then be reinvigorated with a secondary cold front Tuesday night into Wednesday morning across the N and NW wind snow belts. This will combine with northerly winds of 40 to 50 mph, resulting in blowing snow and near zero visibilities for the Wednesday morning commute. #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsareaMixed precipitation, mainly of rain and snow, will spread west to east across the UP tonight into tomorrow morning. SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/12/26 Good evening everyone! We had on and off snow showers in the Soo today and picked up another couple of inches. Turbo and Diane were out in the Pisten Bully today on the 889 loop, the powerlines, and 480 north of M28. Here’s what Turbo had to say- “Howdy everyone! Turbo here. Wanted to give a little trail update. I woke up early and told Mrs. Turbo I would like to take her out for a romantic breakfast. Little did she know we had to grab our Pisten Bully and a Dubie first. We groomed trail 480, the power lines, and the 889 loop, then down to Bay Mills where we had a very good breakfast before heading back on the trail. This was our first time grooming the loop this year, and I just have to say the crew has been doing a great job while we weren't here. I would have to say it is better than anytime last year already. WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> It's noon here on Monday, January 12th, and this week does present a couple instances of lake effect snow throughout the week. As a preliminary first call for the entire week, we've displayed current odds at areas receiving more than 4" of snow based on data from medium range models, and the WPC. Most of the lake effect snow for the UP will fall between Tuesday and Thursday, where much of the higher elevation areas along Lake Superior currently have a greater than 50% chance at 4" of snow by the end of the work week. For much of the LP, lake effect snow will be confined primarily to Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, especially AFTER Wednesday heading into Thursday. We are keeping an area of 1-20% across much of southern and central Michigan in the event wind shifts or passing clippers allow for extra accumulation, but the greatest chances for 4" will be in the far southwest corner, the thumb, or your typical lake effect zones across northern lower Michigan. We have lake effect snow forecasts coming all week, along with other forecasts for other weather phenomena such as wind, rain, and perhaps mixed precipitation. SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/11/26 Last one for the day, I think. Lane went out scouting on 49 today, and there’s definitely some wet spots showing now south of 11 mile. He said it definitely needs cold, but it’s flat and nice with the new snow. Sleds will pack it in, and cold later this week will really seal it up. I went out with a group to the west after checking on 480 (please see video from earlier), and we had a fantastic day. We went to Trout Lake and hit many forest service roads as we made our way back to the Soo. Chippewa Snowchasers has 472 from west of Rudyard to Trout Lake in amazing condition! On our return to the Soo, 8 from Brimley east had the typical chatter bumps after a weekend day. We need a bit more snow, another groom, and it’ll be much better. Couple of low 30s days ahead, then temps nosedive. Based on the images I’ve seen from clubs all over the UP, we all definitely welcome a deep freeze for the swamps. Hope you all had a great weekend!❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0111f#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/11/26 Good evening all! Groomer Pete was out tonight on the city trails, and here’s what he had to say- “I went out for my scheduled Sunday night of the city trails. The Good: The base we do have is pretty thick and flat. The Ashmun Bay access trail ( Trail 8 )is in fine shape all the way to the staging area. Trail 49 from the tracks into town is in good shape, and the hills between the tunnel and the airport are good! The rest of 49 is in good shape as well all the way to 3 Mile. The Bad: The warm temps and amount of rain last week definitely hampered our trail building efforts. 449 is pretty good most of the way. There are definitely some soft wet areas approaching Seymour and going to Kewadin. I stayed on the drier side of the trail and avoided opening up any water holes, but riders beware that the water and slush is there! The trails are very icy with a little fluffy powder on top. The sugary snow and powder don’t really setup well, so use caution on turns. The Ugly: 497, the trail to the High School, is a mess. Tons of water. I made it a couple hundred yards in, and it was a mess. I did a 30 point turn and went back out. I could see significant water holes and nastiness inside the tree line and decided not to make it worse. Plus I was worried about getting stuck, with water hole depth unknown. That trail should be avoided for a couple days until the very cold returns and we get some heavy snow. I would not expect this trail to be groomed again for a few days. Picture is provided to show the conditions. We survived last weeks warmup and rain, but we have some recovering to do for sure. Do your snow dances and fingers crossed that the cold returns later this week. -Groomer Pete” Thanks Pete! Wow! What a difference it makes when there is snow in the northern lower and across the UP!
Just got back from a ride to Paradise and the trails were excellent on the way out AND back! The swamp south of Paradise has some water spots and mud, to be expected but their part of 8 and 452 was awesome! Chippewa Snowchasers part of 8 was also awesome, as were our parts of 8 and 889!
Lower traffic and recent snow have things in great shape here in the EUP!
Headed out to groom now. Gotta pay to play! I’ll report when I get back.
Ride safe everyone! ❄️❄️❄️

I’ll follow up with a couple more reports from the day in a bit. 497 to the high school pictured #soo #soo0111e#snowphotos1/11/26
