Gaylord Area Trail Report – 02/28
Gaylord Bureau – February 27, 2026 9:05 a.m. Today is supposed to be in the 40s with some sun, but trails are currently in good to excellent shape. Trails near Lakes of the North and areas around the airport are all rated in excellent condition. Trail 7 heading north is in excellent condition until near Perry Road, where it changes to fair. You’ll also find Johannesburg in excellent condition, with the exception of the trail near the logging operation. Heading south to Frederick is now in excellent condition, too. We will update you tomorrow on how much the warmup affects trail conditions. Enjoy winter before it’s too late and get some extra miles in! Please note, due to last April’s ice storm, there are logging operations in some locations. Logging is taking place on the intersection of trails 7 & 4 (Waters) toward Dodge Lake and near Turtle Lake Road (East of Gaylord). The logging trucks may use the trail as a road at times. Proceed with caution in these areas. Trails are still passable and the groomers are doing their best to keep the trails smooth in these areas. Check out a live view of trail # 7 here. Roads are very drty but still snow on the trails. 2 pics below show how much my parking lot changed since yesterday. I have seen sleds out already and the west parking lot on 72 had 4 trucks already this morning. You just have to make the best of what we do have. The Darkside Adventures guys have passed the 2200 mile mark and still have 2 days of riding to go. What an adventure. I had a call a couple days ago from a guy and he said I have a question that might sound funny. He was in Mackinaw City by the big hot dog. His question was where is the bridge as it was his first time there. I said just go about a quarter mile north and you cant miss it. He was concerned about the dry road but I said you need to dry slide if you want to get to it. I hope he finally found it. Thats about it for today. Lets see how things work out. FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> Thursday 10 a.m. -- Well we lost more snow yesterday as it got up to 53 degrees, so far this morning only up to 36. Things still look suprisingly white. Saw sleds out and about yesterday and we went to Lovells to the Riverside for lunch. I didnt ride mysled but I drove out there. The pics below were a group of riders from Canton OHio with the flying tigers snowmoblile club. Heck the one guy was riding in shorts. They left their buddy Patrick back in Ohio and they said they were heading to the u.p. today to the Clarke Motel for a run up there. Still some riders out there, I see one unloading over at the swamp. Pic below is a guy I saw at the gas station yesterday afternoon and he told me he had a great ride from lakes of the north down to frederic, trail 4 to 7 . At least a few riders still holding out for the end. Trail crossings I looked at this morning still pretty nice and white. That ice underneath is saving things but with more warmth coming itwill be going away.Like I have said many times I have seen way worse conditions than this before. Thanks for checking in. The warmth will help melt and leave some lube for those that are adventureous enough to get a ride in. My sled is buried in the corner right now but I know I could get a good ride in if I was a bit more ambitious. Ground or should I say ice is still rock hard and it is now 33 degrees. I would think that once things start melting that if you were here you could still get in a ride. Trail crossings I looked at on the way up here are still pretty white. I looked at the sledview.com camera and it looks bright white with still no snirt and 12 inches showing on his depth guage.
