Petoskey Area Trail Report – 12/30

December 30, 2020

Groomer Tom and his wife Brenda are out panning and checking out the trails. We sure could use more snow to get some base going, but it looks bleak the next couple weeks. Keep doing those snow dances and hoping for snow.
Keep in mind that groomers have the right of way and try their best to look out for you. Be sure to throw them a ‘Thumbs Up’ to show your appreciation for a job well done!

Did you know…
The cost to groom 1 (one) mile of trail is $5.13? If you divide that $5.13 into the $48 trail permit cost, you will see that after you have ridden just a few short miles the $48 spent on the permit has been used up. This is the cheapest part of your snowmobiling budget yet goes a long ways to support the Michigan Grant Sponsors that help groom YOUR trails.

We need you
If your reading this and ride our trails, we need your help,we are in need of members. We are one of Michigan’s oldest clubs, forming in 1969, over the years membership has gone up and down, right now we have less than thirty members on the rolls and probably only twelve actually do all the work. Even if you can`t help all the time with brushing in the fall or grooming thru the winter, some help, when ever available would be more than welcome. If you can`t help physically your membership dues helps us do the things the DNR doesn`t help with. Again, if you like smooth trails, we need you, the trails don`t groom themselves.

JORDAN VALLEY AREA UPDATE via Jordan Valley Trails Council >> Hats off to Mike, Rich and Pete for spending two cold days fixing a minor issue found on the track of the Pisten Bully! These guys have been on the recovery and fix of the blown track and this latest fix this year and we couldn’t do it without them! Hopefully our machine issues are behind us for the year!
Our Milwaukee Tool are a key part of program. From our impacts, grease guns and chainsaws in the cab of our units, these tools make our volunteers lives easier! Hopefully next year we’ll have a building in Alba to get out of the weather. Go check out the go fund me or visit the Antrim County Snowmobile Club and help us make this happen! gofund.me/a9c1cde53
Our groomers were out all weekend making up for the down machine. Thank you to our volunteers for adjusting their schedules! Trails have come back around since we’ve received some fresh snow to mix in with the crusty snow left from the meld down. Looks like we may receive another foot by next weekend which will help build back up the trail. This week will be frigid so we will adjust grooming as needed for snowfall and temps. Make sure you check out Groomer Tracker for all our grooming!
🚧Trail 4 near the Pinney Bridge there was a car in the trail today, please use caution as the trail maybe rutted from the vehicle or recovery effort🚧 #jordanvalley #gaylord #petoskey #snowphotos

We had about 175 sleds leave the barn and nearly 300 by the time we reached the town hall. It turned into a beautiful day, with the sun even making an appearance. Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 12/30

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 12/30

It was a great day to ride Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula!

White gold seemed to fall all day and the bridge was opened for snowmobile crossing! It was a beautiful winter wonderland and here are just a few photos trying to capture that beauty!

Trails were awesome for the majority of the day and we felt as though we were just floating on top of pillows as we were riding.

Groomer Operators were busy down in Houghton/Hancock all day getting the Portage Lake Lift Bridge opened, therefore trails north of Mohawk did not see grooming operations today. It was fun riding all the fresh champagne powder that fell last night and continued today. By late afternoon, all the traffic had taken a toll on the condition of the trails …….and it should be noted we still don’t really have a base. The return trip south was definitely a bit rougher and once again you were hearing the rocks hit your carbides in areas.
Copper Harbor was pretty busy with riders fueling up at Copper Harbor Fuel Stop
and then grabbing a bite to eat, beverage and meeting new friends while sharing stories around the fire pit at The Mariner North
.
These businesses are all trying their hardest to make the best possible experience for riders at their establishments.
It should be noted that where Trail 3 heading north splits at the “y” still has a locked gate, therefore you must go to the right at the “y” onto trail 134 to head into Copper Harbor. (See map in the photos)Groomer Operators have said the gate should be unlocked tomorrow sometime.
Also remember, Groomer Operators have not been able to get out to High Rock Bay and the same water hole at Union Creek that seems to be a problem each year is there now also.
Trails should still be considered early season conditions and extreme caution should be taken while riding.
We definitely still need more snow so keep the snow dances going. ❄️💃

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 12/30

FRESH SNOW and the OPENING of the bridge! I’m doing my happy dance!

Groomer Operator/South End Trail Boss Glenn Rowe
shared this sneak peek photo of the process of opening the Portage Lake Lift Bridge for snowmobile traffic!

It’s going to be a great day to ride Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula! The Keweenaw Snowmobile Club Groomer Operators and City of Houghton are hard at work opening the bridge for crossing from Houghton to Hancock. The city is helping out with 3 trucks hauling in snow.

We received 6-8 inches of fresh champagne powder last night and Glenn said it has really helped the trails out. He noted there could still be some rock showing through in the Mohawk area.
Can’t wait to get out there and ride! Please feel free to share any photos you have of riding and trail condition reports!

PLEASE stay clear of the bridge today while they are preparing it to make their job go smoother! These guys work S❄ hard for all of us riders!

The last photo shows original usage of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge!

We received another 6.5 inches this morning and it's still snowing at 10:00am. Pretty much white out conditions all morning and it's still very poor visibility.
Stay warm it's only 1° right now.
I thought I'd share a few picks from my ride down 109 yesterday while I grooming.

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports >> W❄️W! What an amazing week it has been on the trails!
The first half of the week was unusually quiet as far as traffic and the trails seriously couldn’t have been better! As we move into the weekend, traffic is definitely picking up but trails have still been in great shape! Huge thank you to all of the clubs and groomer operators!
Ryan Bennet and Nikki McGill set out to enjoy some of the trails this morning from Krupps Resort and they weren’t disappointed! Ryan shared these photos with us and said, “Have had a GREAT day so far! Ran down 3 to 12, over to 174 down to Sidnaw. Back up 109 through the Sturgeon River Gorge, ran up to Church in the Valley Bar. Will be taking 109 back to Twin Lakes. What a great 160+ mile day!”
This weekend and upcoming week’s forecast includes fresh snow and colder temps each day! Just what ever sledder ordered!
Thanks for sharing Ryan! #keweenaw #snowphotos
