KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 01/24

Do you dream 😴 of owning a little slice of heaven in the Keweenaw someday?
Bob and Kathy Beaupied from Kiva, Michigan have been UP riding the last couple of days and they included a stop at their personal piece of propertry in Copper Harbor, Michigan!
Bob shared these beautiful photos with us and said, β€œKathy and I did a little on trail/off trail riding in the Keweenaw the last two days. Trails were great considering the lack of fresh snow. We stopped at our Copper Harbor property for a lakeside break. We had a great breakfast at The Mariner North and ate lunch at the Parkview – New Lodge and Grill!
We met our nephew and friends in Copper Harbor as they were doing their annual backpack trip from Grand Marais. My nephew and gang left the Mariner this morning (Monday) at 8am and rode to Ishpeming. They said everything was smooth the whole way with the exception of a few miles near the bottom of Brockway Mountain.
We actually have twice the snow at our house but we’d rather ride the Keweenaw! πŸ˜β€. We totally understand your preference of riding the Keweenaw! There is just something about the area that can steal your heart! All of the beautiful views and stops along the trails at areas businesses are just a few things, along with the awesome people you will meet that will have you continuously coming back for more!
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful photos and review of trails! Please feel free to bring snow back with you next time you come from Kiva! Or at least join in with a good snow dance! β„πŸ’ƒ

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Two forecasts for today, January 13th, 2026, and Wednesday, January 14th, 2026, regarding system snow, then lake effect snow.
Graphic #1
A clipper moves through today, bringing rain/freezing drizzle to portions of northern Michigan and the UP, especially north of M-55, with some light rain as far south as I-94. This will change over to a rain/snow mix later this afternoon and evening. Brief accumulation amounts will generally be in the T-1" range, although a couple spots could exceed 1", which are areas highlighted by the 1-3" zone. Air temperatures today will generally be at or above freezing in the UP, but evaporative cooling will still keep the ground cooler than the air.
Graphic #2
Lake effect snow ramps up beyond midnight tonight, heading into tomorrow, the 14th. Early indications are that the central UP will see the most with flow directly out of the north. Areas of 2-5" and 4-8" have been displayed as a result for much of the Lake Superior shoreline region to account for this flow. The LP is still a little on the uncertain side for overachievers tomorrow. We are watching the usual Gaylord region, but also immediate shoreline areas of Lake Michigan from Traverse City down to New Buffalo, and the thumb, as continued flow out of the north seems like on Thursday. For now, totals will remain as shown, and our last call for tomorrow will be out early in the morning. Inland areas in the T-1" zone may also see slight improvements if balloon launch data today continues to trend in the right direction.
Timing for both days is for the entirety of both days, as precipitation will be on-and-off throughout the next 48 hours. Travel concerns will generally be on the mild side of things, but don't let that fool you. Drive with care no matter what's falling out there. Follow us here at Michigan Storm Chasers for updates throughout the next couple days as the snow falls. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #munising #newberry #soo #gaylord

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Mixed precipitation, mainly of rain and snow, will spread west to east across the UP tonight into tomorrow morning. Pockets of freezing rain could also mix in at onset and lead to a light glaze of ice on roadways for the Tuesday morning commute. Heavy lake effect snow will then be reinvigorated with a secondary cold front Tuesday night into Wednesday morning across the N and NW wind snow belts. This will combine with northerly winds of 40 to 50 mph, resulting in blowing snow and near zero visibilities for the Wednesday morning commute. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsareaMixed precipitation, mainly of rain and snow, will spread west to east across the UP tonight into tomorrow morning. Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> It's noon here on Monday, January 12th, and this week does present a couple instances of lake effect snow throughout the week. As a preliminary first call for the entire week, we've displayed current odds at areas receiving more than 4" of snow based on data from medium range models, and the WPC.
Most of the lake effect snow for the UP will fall between Tuesday and Thursday, where much of the higher elevation areas along Lake Superior currently have a greater than 50% chance at 4" of snow by the end of the work week. For much of the LP, lake effect snow will be confined primarily to Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, especially AFTER Wednesday heading into Thursday. We are keeping an area of 1-20% across much of southern and central Michigan in the event wind shifts or passing clippers allow for extra accumulation, but the greatest chances for 4" will be in the far southwest corner, the thumb, or your typical lake effect zones across northern lower Michigan.
We have lake effect snow forecasts coming all week, along with other forecasts for other weather phenomena such as wind, rain, and perhaps mixed precipitation. LAKE GOGEBIC AREA UPDATE via Gogebic Area Grooming – 01/23

Lake Gogebic Area Grooming Update:
The Lake Gogebic Area has been an area of extremely high traffic and groomers have been doing all they can to keep up with the volume of visitors! Thanks go out to the cold temperatures for coming in strong and helping to close up any remaining spots. Cold temperatures are to remain constant this week with mid 20’s during the week and down into the teens in the evenings. Snow is forecasted for several days this week and we will see what happens!

β€’ Trail 8 East: groomed Sunday night and is reported to be
good, flat and fast!
β€’ Trail 8 West: Groomed Saturday and in good condition and
water holes have sealed up!
β€’ Trail 13North: Also groomed Sunday night – it’s like a snow
paved highway and reported in good condition.
β€’ Trail 1 North: was groomed Saturday night – good condition.
β€’ Trail 1 South: good condition
β€’ Trail 102: groomed Saturday night. In good condition.
β€’ Trail 100 and South end of Lake Gogebic – all trails have been
groomed and reported in good condition.
Groomers will be out every night of the week – and let’s just keep our fingers crossed for snow!

<>

Crews out cleaning up the trails after the weekend by Marenisco. With the colder weather we are able to start building back up the snow bridges to cover the water. Cold weather also keeps some of the wildlife moving too, some wolf tracks and territory marking on the freshly groomed trail! Never know what you will see when out grooming!!

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via Hamilton's North Coast Adventures >> We took a casual 70mi groomer ride last night! We knew conditions might have been tough, but we are "reasons why to" people instead of "reasons why not"! We ended up running the loop and laying down some mighty good looking ribbons! We groomed from 5pm until 3am (then an hour long drive home to bed!). Trails were found to be in good shape, but we are seeing a few wet areas showing their ugly faces again. Not bad at all, but the snow bridges softened some, so we filled em back in! We groomed out of Ontonagon South down the 12 RR grade, continuing to Rockland on 137. I turned west on 13 and did a double groom of the infamous rock hill, which was again in amazing shape! I then groomed 13 to 101, 101 to 12, 12 to trail 1, trail 1 to White Pine. I turned around and groomed trail 12 back to Ontonagon. Our rental house books up fast, starting this weekend it is booked up until March. Thank you to our customers who support us! Woofta, long night and a long today with an inability to sleep in! Quieter weather on Thursday then gives way to another chance of snow with the next system on Friday. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via Scott's Superior Inn and Cabins >> Ontonagon / Porcupine Mountains Snowmobile Trail Report
We’ve picked up a couple inches of fresh snow over the last couple days, and the timing couldn’t be better. Looking ahead, 8 to 20 inches of new snow is in the forecast starting toward the end of this week, setting the stage for some incredible riding. Adding to the excitement, a rare polar vortex is on the horizon, bringing colder temperatures that typically fire up lake-effect snow off Lake Superior. That combination is exactly what riders love to see this time of year.
The great news is that trails are already in good to excellent condition across the western U.P. Bases are solid, grooming is ongoing, and the colder weather will only help lock everything in. With more snow and sustained cold coming, conditions are expected to improve even further over the next couple of weeks, shaping up for a strong stretch of mid-winter riding.
If you’re thinking about planning a trip, now is the time to get it on the calendar. For lodging right on Lake Superior with easy access to Ontonagon and Porcupine Mountains trails, stay at Scott’s Superior Inn and Cabins. Rider-friendly accommodations, hot breakfast, plenty of parking, and a warm, comfortable place to relax after a full day on the trails. Check availability and make Scott’s your home base for an epic western U.P. ride. #ontonagon #westernup #snowphotos
