ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via Scott's Superior Inn and Cabins >> ❄️ What is Lake Effect Snow? 🌊 What you’re seeing in this video isn’t a passing storm system — it’s lake effect snow, and it’s something we experience along Lake Superior almost daily. Lake effect snow forms when cold air moves across the relatively warmer waters of Lake Superior. As that air travels over the lake, it absorbs heat and moisture. Once it reaches land, the air rises, cools, and releases that moisture as snow — often in narrow bands that can linger for hours or even days. How is it different from “system snow”? System snow comes from large, organized storms that show up clearly on radar and affect wide areas. Lake effect snow is local and shallow, meaning one town can be getting hammered while another just a few miles away stays dry. Why doesn’t it always show up on radar? Because lake effect snow clouds are low and thin, radar often has trouble detecting them — even when snow is steadily piling up on the ground. This is the kind of snow that makes winter along Lake Superior special — quiet, constant, and uniquely ours. 🌨️ #ontonagon #westernup#snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> A fast-moving system this evening through tonight brings 4 to 8 inches of snowfall to the area. Most snow will fall within a 6 hour period with moderate to heavy snow rates (0.5 to 1+ inch per hour) and quickly reduced visibilities down to 1/4 mile or less for a 2 to 4 hour period. Snow will end overnight into early Monday morning. The Monday morning commute could be impacted, especially in the east, mainly for roads that have not been treated/cleared yet. Late Monday night into Tuesday brings a wintry mix which could create more slick road conditions. #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea... Tonia O’Rourke & Mickey Hoose have been up taking advantage of the awesome conditions. Tonia shared these photos with us and said, “We had to come up to Copper Harbor to visit with our favorite waitress Ana at The Mariner North! She remembered us and knew we drank coffee and started a new pot!! Weather conditions aren’t that great, we’ll be heading back to our lodging to beat the blizzard coming in! 🥰❤️❄️ It was a great day for snowmobiling to Copper Harbor! Here are all our pictures of our amazing day! Making memories is what it’s all about! Hope you enjoy our adventure! 🥰👍❄️❄️❄️”
Thank you so much for sharing Tonia and we all agree Ana is simply awesome along with everything about the Mariner!
‼️⚠️ Hopefully you all have seen the post earlier today regarding a rough night the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club had with grooming operations. To summarize – a groomer slid off the trail in a wet area, the other two machines spent the night trying to recover the stuck machine. They were unsuccessful and a local contractor will be helping today. The machine is stuck on the side of the trail just north of the junction of trail 130 and trail 3, on trail 3. Groomers will be out today to get trails back into shape. The only trails groomed last night were trail 3 from Toivola to Houghton and trail 3 from Mohawk to Clear Lake Junction(the split to Copper Harbor via Brockway and trail 134)⚠️‼️

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via The U.P. Superior Snowmobile Club – 2/24
Groomer Todd reporting:
Fwd:Good Morning Everyone. Ribbons Are Back! The almost 20 inches of fresh snow this week has improved our Superior Snowmobile Club trail system exponentially from a week ago.
Trail 13 West from Greenland to Rockland was groomed early this morning to the trail 137 intersection. Trail 12 out of Greenland to trail 3 was also groomed. I would rate the trail in excellent condition.
I was able to climb the Rockland hills again with the groomer and drag with the pan down. This is a 24 mile run and takes me about 4 hours depending on conditions. I used 24 gallons of diesel and 5 quarts of DEF on this run. Thanks again for supporting the Superior Snowmobile Club!
