SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/26
12/26- day 1 of “the warm spell”. It was cloudy all day, steady 35 degrees. I heard sleds all day buzzing by on trail 8 right behind my house. My snow gauge reads 16”. Too warm to groom, but I doubt the trails suffered too much.
We’ll keep you posted!

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/25
12/25 evening update
We hope you all had a great Christmas
and also happy 1st night of Chanukah to those who celebrate! We hope you got to spend some time on the trails!
With warm temps coming, grooming will be on hold. With the hard work we’ve put in, they’re pretty darn flat, and we feel we’ve done all we can to pack and preserve a good base.
I’ll for sure still be updating as we move through this little warm spell. I don’t think it’s going to be as bad as many are fearing.
Tomorrow should be another great day to ride.
Get out while you can❄️❄️❄️

12/25- Merry Christmas everyone!
This morning, we took a ride and I can tell ya that Bill’s groom last night is holding up awesome! Here’s his report-
“Tonight on this Christmas Eve I took our Pretty Red Sleigh out on the Powerline, Trail 8 from Raco to Brimley, and Trail 480 part way down Spile Dam Road. I made some nice ribbons 🎀 in the snow for all the good boys and girls to enjoy.
Earlier today I was able to go out for my first snowmobile ride. I rode the trails around Mission Hill, after Raco Dave groomed them to perfection.
Hopefully the mild temperatures over the next week won’t have too much of a negative impact on the hard work of Raco Dave and his Trail Grooming Elves!”
WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> A high impact winter storm is set to impact the U.P. tonight through tomorrow. Blizzard conditions are expected to develop, resulting in areas near zero visibility, especially near Lake Superior where gusts upwards of 60 mph are likely. Important update: Trends in storm track have resulted in a southeast shift of the heaviest snowfall axis. Areas of 1 to 2 feet will be common from the high terrain of the central UP eastward along and north of M-28. Strong northerly winds may result in downed trees and power outages. Please take extreme caution if you must travel over the next 24 hours. Stay safe! Check in on your neighbors! SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/27/25 Good evening! I just got back from a ride from the Soo to Hulbert and back and the trails are very busy, as expected. Unfortunately, grooming is on pause for us for a couple of reasons- 1) it’s too warm for it to make any difference whatsoever 2) we need more snow (and it’s coming!) 🚨 Please take note- the Pisten Bully that stays in Raco and does the Raco/Brimley/Bay Mills areas (8 west of Brimley, 480 from the Raco gate to 8, and 889) has a leaking hydraulic seal and had to be brought into the Soo barn tonight. We are awaiting the part and anticipate that it may be down until Tuesday🚨 Trails will be a bit sloppy with the warmer temps and higher traffic. The snow is soft and corners are icy, so please be careful. We heard of 2 accidents today, unfortunately. We are hopeful that the riders are ok❤️🩹 Significant lake effect snow is expected tomorrow night into Tuesday, and we’ll roll groomers out as soon as it makes sense to do so. Please ride safe, and ride sober. There are lots of families out there and we all need to work together to ensure we can all make it back safely. Thanks all! Snow and colder temps are on the way and we’ll keep you posted! 🙌🏼❄️❄️❄️ #soo #snowphotos#soo1227... See MoreSee Less

WEATHER UPDATE via Midwest Weather >> ~(Updated) Snowfall Forecast Sunrise Sunday-Sunrise Tuesday~ A major winter storm is expected to bring significant snowfall to portions of the region. Most of the accumulating snow will be along and north of I-80. No matter how much snow will fall, there will be strong northwest winds that will create blowing and drifting snow. Travel north of I-80 will be near impossible at times. Some road closures are possible along and north of I-90 given greater accumulation and more persistent blizzard-like conditions. Heaviest snowfall totals through sunrise Tuesday (there will be more after) will be along Lake Superior. Snowfall rates could exceed 2" an hour at times due to lake enhancement. Expect over a foot in most areas along the lakeshore before dropping as you get closer to the WI border. #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea#gaylord#cadillac#benzie#traversecity#petoskey~OUTDATED~

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/27/25 Good morning! No real significant snow in our area yesterday, though we did pick up a general 4-5” inches over much of our area. We did have groomers out yesterday in the Raco, Bay Mills, and Brimley areas, on 8, 889, and part of 480, as well as on trail 49 from the Soo to 12 mile, and also on 49 from Devils Hill to Kinross and the 494 loop. We skipped the thin section south of 12 to preserve the new snow and let riders pack it. City trails will be done tonight if needed, as well as trail 8 from the Soo to Brimley. I’ll be going for a ride later today and I’ll report what I see. Significant snow is forecasted for tomorrow through Tuesday, along with high winds so that could get interesting. Remember, we are on Groomer Tracker, subscribe today! Ride safe! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo ... See MoreSee Less

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/26/25 Good morning, all! We hope you had a wonderful Christmas! Our wish has been granted and snow has returned! How much we will get remains to be seen, but sounds like 6” for our general area by tomorrow, then more later in the weekend. Our Raco crew is out on the 889 loop as I type this, and we’ll update once groomers are able to roll out in other areas. As a reminder- trail 472 from Tilson Rd all the way to the Raco gate on 480 has lots of heavy equipment and a partially plowed road in there with exposed rocks due to bridge construction. We are advising that you stay out of there for now please. We cannot groom it either. See the pinned post for more info and for the exact location. Also see the post from yesterday for the trouble spots on trail 49. All other trails have good coveage and a solid base. This new snow will only help. As always, we will keep you posted! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo ... See MoreSee Less

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 12/24
12/24- trail 49 Soo to Kinross report from Steve. Always an adventure on this historic route!
“Tonight Passenger Chris and I made a run from the Soo to Kinross on Trail 49.
We worked our way through the city trails and crossed 3 Mile and headed south.
From town to about 6 Mile Rd, there is a couple feet of snow on top of standing water. The warm ground and warm water is melting the trail from the bottom up.
Our goal tonight was to try and get the trail leveled and compacted with hopes it will freeze quicker during the next cold spell.
It was one of the roughest runs I’ve had in a long time. The trail had one to two foot bumps all the way to Kinross.
The fresh snow today was awesome. I was able to load up the drag all night with snow and fill in low spots.
We went into the swamp south of 12 Mile and hoped for the best. We hit some open water not too far south of the gate. It is about 100-150 yards long.
We climbed out of it and stayed on top of the snow and ice all the way to Gaines Hwy.
Watching in the mirrors I could see the trail was leveling up really nice. I could also see we were pushing water up to the surface which was what we really needed.
We bounced our way all the way to the gas station in Kinross where we took a breather and called our groomer boss Mike with a report.
We decided to not go back through the swamp on the return trip. The trail had one pass that turned out really good. I was pretty sure the water I pushed up would soften the base and wouldn’t support the groomer if we went through again.
The drag I was using was a different one than I normally pull. I had trouble getting it to track straight. I made adjustments all night but never really got comfortable with it. The erratic behavior caught up with me on the bridge by Walmart. I couldn’t get it to follow the groomer and had a slow speed impact with the guard rails and damaged two of them. We stopped and put them back in place the best we could.
Groomer Dennis was waiting for us at Walmart and took the last hour of the run.
Chris and I had over five hours of bouncing around the cab and were both exhausted. Thank you to Dennis for relieving us.
The trail is starting to take shape but still needs more work and colder weather.
I was really happy with what we accomplished tonight.
Steve Lawson”
I’m always so impressed by Steve’s willingness to be the first guy to brave it, and Chris has been along with him many times which can be just as stressfull. Big thanks to them!
While it’s not quite ready yet, we are ahead of schedule compared to most years.
Stay tuned!
