Sault Ste. Marie Trail Report – 03/03

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 03/03

We’re definitely in late season conditions, earlier than we had all hoped but we are still grooming and riders are reporting fair to good trails. They will be icy and hard so use caution and ride for conditions. Road shoulders are bare and ditches have water in them now. No snow in the forecast but low temps in the teens and 20s could help produce Lake Effect if winds cooperate.
From Groomer Mike this morning…

“The trails are looking decent in town but towards The Antlers restaurant north of Marquette St the ditches are water… The trail is pretty smooth through there with what looked like limited traffic..

The Misson overlook ( trail 889 )was done tuesday as well as soo to brimley ( trail 8 )

no report of kinross area on tuesday

groomer 9 still down…but 8 is keeping up…”

Thank you Mike and all volunteers for making these trails last as long as possible!❄️❄️❄️

It's a messy system with multiple precipitation types, so be sure to click on our page to go see our ice forecast.

Discussion
The north side of the low will have much colder air, and the deformation zone for this event will be set up across the eastern UP and Lake Superior region. Totals greater than 1" of snow (some melting) will be confined north of M-55 to the Mackinac Bridge, while totals closer to the 3"+ mark are confined from St. Ignace up to Paradise and Sault Ste. Marie. Additionally, the Keweenaw Peninsula also may see the highest snowfall totals too.

You may have noticed that we added a new color for this event only. Because there is a gradual change from rain to snow... freezing rain, and even sleet is expected with this event. Sleet is like the shared sibling between snow and freezing rain. Sleet is snow that melted to rain really high up immediately after falling from the clouds, but spent enough time in the cold sector after melting to reform into tiny pellets. Freezing rain, however, forms when there isn't enough time for the rain to reform back into those tiny ice pellets due to that warm sector close to the ground, but because the ground itself IS a cold sector, it freezes on contact. Yes, sleet is slippery, but due to its properties, it's not quite as impactful. Still, because of the sleet's size, it accumulates in tenths of an inch similar to snow instead of hundredths like freezing rain. As a result, much of the white trace-1" corridor will likely fall as <1" of both snow and sleet. Again, not a huge amount, but worth mentioning. Timing for this snowfall will be similar to that of the ice. Anytime from 6 am EST Friday through the end of the day Friday is the expected duration.

Winter weather advisories are now in effect for the eastern UP regarding this snowfall. We will have traffic impact maps and timing maps coming later this afternoon after our Christmas morning activities. See you all back here soon!

Merry Christmas Eve! A curious deer checked out our snow gauge overnight. A bit of a warm up kept groomers parked yesterday, but cold has returned this morning, and there’s a decent amount of snow in the forecast in the coming days. Things were super flat before the warm up yesterday, so once again we have an excellent base.
We will keep you posted! Enjoy time with your families and friends 🎄❄️ #soo #snowphotos

Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 03/03

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 03/03

We survived another one day warm up quite well!

There were some thin spots starting to show today. Getting through Hancock was less pleasant with some bare pavement, and road crossings have become thin/bare in areas, but the trails were overall in excellent condition yesterday outside of towns!

Mike Aschliman has really timed his trip perfectly…..again! Mike makes it out west and up to Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula when he’s not lucky enough to be riding from his own back door!
Mike shared these photos from yesterday and said, “Well done!👏 The 906 is amazing! These Groomer Operators really take pride in their trails! There are more Groomers than sleds!”

We couldn’t agree more, Mike! These Groomer Operators pour their heart and soul into these trails and maintaining/repairing the machines! The passion snd dedication is what makes the Keweenaw my personal weekly/daily riding area! I personally can’t thank them AND their family members and friends also that are behind the scenes helping to support their looooong days/nights! Of course the club doesn’t operate so smoothly without the entire Keweenaw Snowmobile Club board members and YOU the members of the club that join and financially help support the club! I receive many messages from riders of how they can help financially and if you missed our post the other day…..click here to see it ➡️ https://www.facebook.com/313447989133680/posts/1078830975928707/?d=n

Join the club, buy 50/50 raffle tickets or donate to the much needed Groomer Barn GoFundMe account! Such a great way to help show your appreciation!

The temps the rest of the week are forecasted to stay below freezing now until Sunday! It will be partly sunny each day. I assume there will be heavy traffic again as the weekend approaches, as I spent a goid part of yesterday trying to help people find places to stay….. and with the forecast for next week… it definitely looks as though NOW is the time to ride!

If you ever get to experience riding the Keweenaw, mid week, I highly recommend it. Sled traffic is usually MUCH less! As Mike said, we didn’t see many other sleds yesterday!
