Grayling Trail Report – Fay’s Motel – 02/23

Greetings Sledders,

Wanted to wait until after the off trailin’ today to do the e-mail version of the report.

LAST WEEKEND: All that were here struggled through the not too good weather conditions to get good rides as the snow was melting during three days of mid to upper 30’s and the Sun set on high. This was accomplished in several directions NW, off trail and some mileage was actually picked up here by the young Mayer lad on his mini Polaris. When he and his younger sister weren’t riding on the big sled with Mom and Dad they spent every available minute riding over the driveway then back to the parking lot, turn around and repeat the course. In setting in my easy chair all I could see was the red flag go by the window in one direction and a few minutes later here it comes back again in the opposite. Cute as hell to watch.

Many thanks to all of you for making last weekend a great one. We had the Carey’s, Wixey’s, Mayer’s , Wagner’s to name a few and of course I would be remiss should I not acknowledge the infamous Grapeman and his group. The Grapeman visited us some years ago and emptied a cooler that had grapes in it into a sink and clogged our drain, hence Grapeman and he is not allowed in any room carrying fruit smaller than an orange. He also claims that he has every report that I’ve published, hard to believe that anyone would want to collect such a pile of jibberish but flattering nonetheless.

The Burger group was also here working on their stuff in the garage and as usual taking it all in stride. You Ohio folks are the most patient people I know. I remember a few years back when we were putting a track on the Lamtrac and these guys took off the coats, rolled up the sleeves and said ALL RIGHT something to fix and dove right in. Thanks again guys, but never utter the word Lamtrac again, brought back horrific memories and nightmares.

HERE AND NOW: We are not grooming. Most of the system is for the most part shot, passable on some segments but not really recommended. The exception to that is what the Wilhelm boys and I experienced today and that would be the straights on the Lovells trail that we went on in order to get to off trail which was great and included an awesome air show by two A-10 drivers, the strafing runs just 75 yards away were just incredable. That Gatling gun is a sight to behold especially when you are that up close and personal.

FUTURE: There’s not much in the forecast to suggest that a turn around in the trail system is on the immediate horizon. Not seeing anything that would compromise off trail but nothing healing on the rest either.

Next report when something looks to change conditions.

Ride Often and Please Be Safe,
Keith, Sandy and The Girls.

At Fay’s Motel enjoy direct access to the Grayling Area snowmobile trails.

Cadillac Area Trail Report – Cadillac Trails – 02/23

FROM THE CADILLAC WINTER PROMOTIONS
Tuesday–February 23, 2010

We didn’t get much of that snow that blanketed the southern part of the state yesterday. And, what did fall, didn’t last long because of the mild temperatures. The snow gauge this morning showed only a one-half inch increase. There is still plenty of snow in the forest but it is wearing thin or non-existent in some open areas and on curves elsewhere. The groomers are going out every day as long as temperatures and conditions permit. Most of the forest trails are excellent with some areas marginal. The remainder of the trail system could be rated good to poor.

Snow gauge*: 6 inches

FROM WOLF LAKE MOTEL – 02/23
Baldwin / Irons / Cadillac

I’m back from my fishing trip, so I’m back to work. I’m sure you all heard about the State wide melting this last weekend. Sunny, high traffic and 35 degrees doesn’t make for great snowmobile trails. The trails did take a beating, but I did see where the groomers did go out and try to flatten the trails out, getting ready for the forecasted snow. That is what’s nice around here, we are in the middle of six different grooming clubs, (which we are members of four) and if one club isn’t grooming today, one of the other clubs are grooming today. We did get an inch or so on 2-22-10, but more snow is needed. The forecast sounds like we are going to get some snow later today and tomorrow and again on Friday and Saturday, but with any forecast I’ll believe it when I see it. If we just get even a few inches, we will be in pretty fair shape.
