St. Ignace Trail Report – 02/03

Huge winter storm Kayla… ya right. Last week some places were predicting 1-3 feet, a few days ago, everyone was getting 8′, then 6′ even last night they were still saying 5′, well Iggy got around 3′, and Moran, TL and most of the EUP got 4′. The only good news is that is the wettest snow I have seen in 2 years – probably the amount forecast problem, as it is still misting/raining right now. Schools are closed as there is lots of ice under the snow from bottom melting. I don’t want to sound negative, cause this snow is packing in like crazy – Wayne is in the groomer right now doing the grade. It isn’t cold enough to set though, so I almost want to say stay off the trail today and let it setup tonight then it will be good to go until we get 40d days.

This snow will set the trails quite well. All of the areas with snow will be in very good – almost excellent condition starting tomorrow. Moran and the pipeline will still be thin, but look much much better then 24 hours ago. Planning on getting another groom in later tonight on most of the trails to get them set for the coming weekend.

Pond Hockey Update:
TRAIL WARNING
There is currently no good lake ice around the area, and the organizers are going to attempt to create rinks at the ice rink parking lot. There will be a winding trail through the area, and you must stay on the marked trail and off the ice rinks! It is going to be very difficult to get the rinks built before the tourney, so please help out, and stay where you belong

Indian River Trail Report – 02/03

What an interesting weather evening we had. Snow started falling late afternoon and it came down hard. The combination of declining temps and moist snowfall created a layer of ice glaze on the road. Soon after the ice glaze came the snow accumulation and hazardous road conditions. People hunkered down and the groomers were in our barn for maintenance/repair. After about 4″ fell the temperatures began warming and snow turned to light rain right before midnight. We stayed around the freezing mark all night and the precipitation was over by daybreak. Side roads are a disaster but main roads are quickly clearing. Practically every school in Northern Michigan was closed today. We haven’t seen any traffic on the trails yet, but that’s not a bad thing. What’s on the trails now is white gold for groomers. We don’t blame riders who take to the trails today–just take it slow in the corners so the snow doesn’t get pushed off the trail. Even though we could climb a little above freezing we’re looking at falling temperatures later. Once it’s time for the groomers to run we expect to be below 32. The groomers will make their magic and the cold will freeze in their work. We expect the great trail conditions to hold for days, thanks to forecasted highs of upper 20’s. So there you have it! The latest and greatest, brought to you by Burt Lake Marina. HOUSEKEEPING ITEMS…FOUND ON THE TRAIL: “Black hat between Indian River and Thirsty Sturgeon–Collectors Item–the weekend of 15th & 16th-must identify-please call 616-540-2431″…Logging continues on the wooded trails down around Weber lake. Remember, the “swamp” section of the Alanson Connector between Smith and Armock Roads is currently CLOSED due to unfrozen swamp causing sleds to get stuck. We are also still hearing reports of open water on Burt Lake so it’s not safe to cross the lake.
