Frederic / Gaylord Area Trail Report – Sledheads of Frederic – 01/24

Time to Ride……finally this is going to be the first real weekend of the season. I took my first ride last night with my friend Tim. We rode up to Starvation lake and then to the settings and on to Waters..

Trail 4 from settings to waters was supreme and we caught up to the groomer just outside of waters. Things seemed weird when we got to waters as it seemed very dark. There was a note on the front door of the Keg that said closed due to no power. We talked to the girl there and she said power was out from Gaylord to Frederic, we headed down trail 7 to come back to Frederic and that was horrid, that trail had not been touched so I took off to some two tracks to ride back to Frederic on something that wasn’t so rough. When we got back to Frederic it was pitch black here too. The only place in Frederic with power was the Frederic Inn as they have a generator. Even my storage units were out of power.

I guess the outage lasted about 3 hours. Its snowing right now with more supposed to be on the ground by tonight. I have been plowing all morning and I think there has been 8 to 10 inches of new stuff. It was nice riding last night on a little bit of soft snow instead of rock hard icy trails.

Pics below were on our ride last night. 42 turkeys in one group and a shot of Tim and I at the Hideaway. The other pic of the guys by the trailer were out back here at my park n ride of guys from St Louis. The one guy (who bought a new sledheads fleece this morning) said he has been reading me for 15 years…….Thanks for that. Please Ride Safely and Thanks for checking in. Pete

St. Ignace Trail Report – Straits Area Snowmobile Club – 01/24

Just a quick update and I will do more later.

Over the last couple of days we received over a foot of new snow. Non of it is really packy, some sugar, some light, some just strange.

Groomers are running, and there are zero problems in the trails, all rated very good condition. The concern now is to get it all packed down, as it seems like loose snow. The smooth trails may get bumpy with use until we can get it all packed and froze down.

Temps this weekend are going to go back down to single digits. Be aware that if the temps drop to -10s, I will cancel groomer runs to same people and equipment, but other than that we should be running every day.

Be safe, be courteous, and if you see a groomer get out of his way please.

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Gaylord Michigan >> Below zero wind chills continue this morning across most of Northern Michigan. Winds chills will be in the teens below zero or colder in parts of eastern upper and north central Lower Michigan. Be sure to bundle up!
A cold Thursday is ahead, though our weather will otherwise be relatively quiet with decreasing lake effect snow and decreasing winds. Another system will spread snow back into the area late tonight into Friday. Several inches of accumulation are possible near Lake Michigan in both peninsulas. This system will allow temperatures to briefly rebound early this weekend. However, Arctic air settles back in by Monday, with continued lake effect snow showers in the snowbelts. #miweather #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskey

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/14/26
Good evening!
We saw a huge temperature swing today, after wet snow and rain later in the day yesterday. 35 last night, 1 tonight with negative windchills🥶
Lane and Randy went on a mission today to work on trail 49 where some water holes opened up during the warm up.
Here’s what Lane had to say, and photos to give you all a visual-
“I took 49 north out of Kinross to try to work on a water hole just south of 9 mile. I took Randy along with me and I was glad I did, he was a big help. That hole is a very deep hole. We filled it with as much ice and snow as we could. It is not pretty, but should freeze in good with these temps. We also worked on a few other water spots that filled in great. The bridge just south of 8 mile had a trench of water on the bridge. That filled in good and will freeze up good also. All the rest of the trail is great. The swamp south of 12 mile held up great and groomed really nice.”
Thank you, Lane and Randy! The timing for this work could not be better. Mid week traffic is light, temps are frigid, and there’s not any significant snow forecasted, so these spots should really lock up now.
The work that our operators put in to the spot south of 11 mile, and near Devils Hill are holding up awesome, even after the warm up the last few days.
This trail continues to improve with each run, and is still so far ahead of where we normally are this time in the season.
Ride safe and stay warm! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0114b #snowphotos

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/14/26
Brimley Bill did the Brimley to Raco route tonight, which is 8 between Brimley and Ranger Rd, and 480 from the Spile Dam Turnaround to 8.
Here’s what he had to say-
“The base is real solid. There were sections of trail with a lot of drifts on the edges. I was able to cut into all the drifts with the Dubie wings, and pull the snow back into the trail. The result is trails that are smooth and flat across the width of the trail.“
Looks awesome, thank you Bill!! 🙌🏼 #soo #soo0114 #snowphotos
