Sault Ste. Marie Trail Report – 02/25

February 25, 2016

Warm temps during the day and not so cold nights are hampering grooming and melting snow. And we have not had a great amount to start with. Some spots have a brown spot here and there.

Trails still in Good to Excellent shape. The road shoulders are the biggest issue. We have tried to groom in ditches where trail runs on shoulder where possible.

The warm days and not so cold nights are melting snow and hindering grooming the icy snow crystals left behind. Low snow to begin with and no new snow makes it rough.

We will have a reroute of about 1.5 miles on trail #472 just west of Kinross as a water hole has reopened off Pluegstra road starting the January 29th.

We have a new plowed parking area at the beginning of trail #8 under the International Bridge.

If you are staying in the Sault please look at our list of supporters on our web page and give them your business. Please do that in all towns you visit. The grooming entities are all made up of volunteers who want you to support those who support us!!!!!!

We now have a marked trail that will be groomed on occasion to get to parts and service at Chippewa Motors. it comes into the back of their lot from the east side of M-129 when you come out of the woods.

Remember trail base is the amount of snow between your track and the ground below not the amount of fluff piled up in the woods. 6 inches of snow compresses to less then a inch on the trail.

Sault Ste. Marie to Brimley, Trail #8 –

Base 1- 4 inches -Trail is in Fair to good Condition.

Brimley to Raco, Trail #8 –

Base 1 – 4 inches -Trail is in good to excellent Condition. When going across the bridge in Brimley make sure you go with the flow of traffic! Blowing and drifting occurs when you first leave Brimley.

Raco to Naomikong Trail #8 [where Paradise meets us], Trail #8 –

Base 3 – 6 inches – Trail is in Good to excellent Condition.

Sault Ste. Marie City Trail, Trails #497, #449, parts of #8 & #49 –

Base 2 -4 inches – Trail is in good condition.

We now have a marked & groomed trail going to Chippewa Motors. It starts once you come out of the woods east of M-129 off #449. It comes into their parking lot from behind if you need parts or service.

City curfew is from 1 am – 6 am. Remember most City streets are open to traffic 20mph, stop at all intersections, and ride on the right hand side of street not on side walks. Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.

Sault Ste. Marie to Kinross, Trail #49 –

Base 2 – 5 inches – Trail is in good to excellent Condition. There are A couple of wet spots on edge of trail but otherwise good.

When the trail is running along roads make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.

Kinross loop & south to Pickford, Parts of Trail #49, #472, and #494 –

Base 2 – 5 inches – Trail in good to excellent condition. The last snow has put it in very nice shape to ride. Watch for trucks driving on trails it seems to be the thing this year.

Kinross to Raco, Parts of trail #472 & #480 –

Base 2 – 5 inches – Trail in good to excellent Condition. Watch for reroute signs just west of Kinross

The Downtown Trail is signed and being taken down by the city today.

Drummond Island Trail Report – D.I. Resort – 02/25

Our trails condition depend on which trail you are on. There are still some great trail conditions and riding in areas on the Island read below:

The West End: 2/25/16

This end of the Island is fair to good with thin spots in the canoe bay area. The Quarry Haul road has been plowed on on side but not on the groomed side so it is still usable just stay on the groomed side and watch for vehicles.

The East End: 2/25/16

This end is poor to fair. Avoid the from Glen Cove north towards the Maxton Plains where there is 8 miles of Icy plowed road with NO lubrication for your sleds due to Logging operation in that area. You can still go to the Marble head view point and ride that loop. Last weekend we had some wheeled Vehicles go on the Marble head loop right after it was groomed loop causing nasty ruts but we have that repaired now.

There is logging going on trail 493 from the plains for 8 miles heading towards the east. Please watch for log trucks! This area is icy with very little snow on it. I would avoid this area if possible. There is still a bit less snow on this end of the Island so the snow on trail this end is thinner.

Our trail base is any where from 2 to 4 inches depending on the area with a little less than foot of snow on the ground.
