Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 03/12

Our temps through the weekend will be in the upper 40’s and low 50’s so our trails will take a beating. Groomers need cooler temps and more snow to groom.

The Gogebic Range Trail Authority Groomers Report:
Groomers are not grooming at this time. We need lower temps and some more snow. There is some open dirt on the trails in places and the trails are in poor condition.

Lake Gogebic Groomer’s Report:
As temps reached into the 50’s, the trails are pretty much gone in and around towns or wherever salt was used on the roadways. Some trails back in the woods are still fairly good, but use caution as some streams are opening up. There will be some wet conditions, some bare conditions, but also some fairly good trails in the cover of the woods.

VERY IMPORTANT: Watch for the reroute where trails 1, 102 and 8 West meet, north of Merriweather going west for about 5 miles. Watch for changes and signs. YOU CANNOT USE THIS AREA FOR ANY RIDING. This reroute will continue to the end of the season. You may also want to top off your gas if headed north through this area as the reroute will add an extra ten miles (there and back) to your trip with no gas stops between Lake Gogebic and Konteka. To view a map of the reroute go to www.explorewesternup.com click on snowmobiling and go to the Lake Gogebic area.

The Watersmeet Groomer’s report:
Well, it is that time of the year….the temps are on the rise. The snow has melted and the groomers stopped running March 8th. Without a good amount of new snow, this looks like we may be done. If conditions become favorable again, we can groom until the last day of March or even into April, weather and DNR permitting.

Sault Ste. Marie Trail Report – 03/11

It did get back down below freezing last night but it is back up to 36 degrees now.

Temps are supposed to drop down in the teens tonight and we will be out doing some grooming before it warms up too much in daylight.

March 10 – The temp was 37 this morning but it is 41 now at 11 am and the sun is shining. Daytime temps all week are to be in the upper thirties but get below freezing at night. It is the beginning of the end!! We will be able to groom before the weekend and you should be able to ride for sure this weekend I believe but we will have to see. The snow turns to ice crystals and road shoulders get bare.

Trails overall are in good to excellent shape and groomers will go out if it gets cold enough at night. If you are staying in the Sault please look at our list of supporters on our web page and give them your business. Please do that in all towns you visit. The grooming entities are all made up of volunteers who want you to support those who support us!!!!!!

We now have a marked trail that will be groomed on occasion to get to parts and service at Chippewa Motors. it comes into the back of their lot from the east side of M-129 when you come out of the woods.
