Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> One of the most absurd snow forecasts we’ve ever made here at MSC, we’ve had to add an impromptu orange color for higher totals.
Key Notes:
•Snow begins to work into Michigan late tonight, but becomes more widespread during the early morning hours of Sunday. This snow continues through Tuesday morning for the UP, and becomes a snow/freezing rain/sleet mix for northern lower Michigan beginning Sunday afternoon/evening.
•Winds will gust between 40-60mph statewide both on Sunday and Monday.
•This will be a full on blizzard for much of the Upper Peninsula
•Expect scattered power outages across the state
•Travel will be near impossible for the UP and northern lower
Snow totals will be between one and four FEET when all is said and done on Tuesday in the UP. Further south, a mix is expected which will keep accumulations lower, and also will provide a sharp cutoff of accumulations. The difference between a foot of snow and 2” may be the width of one county.
Further south, this system will end as snow for lower Michigan on Monday & Tuesday, which is why we have a wide area within a trace to an inch, and western lower in a 1-3” zone with wording of higher totals possible. We may need to adjust totals here as new data comes clearer for Tuesday.
Stay tuned for the icing portion of this forecast. Northern lower Michigan will see significant icing which is not shown or communicated in this forecast graphic or write up. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskeyOne of the most absurd snow forecasts we’ve ever made here at MSC, we’ve had to add an impromptu orange color for higher totals.

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via North Country Snowmobile Club UP >> 01/22

Hey Sledheads – We are day grooming in anticipation of the polar vortex descending on us. Tractor Mac is headed from White Pine to Lake of the Clouds & South Boundary Road (Trails 1 and 11) and Wyatt is grooming from the NCSC clubhouse to Greenland and back (Trail 12). Please ride right, stay warm and check your Groomer Tracker so you know where our guys are at if you are riding today.

We’d also like to extend a big “THANK YOU” to Jason for helping Wyatt with the recent PistenBully repair so we can get PB19 back on the trails!

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via Scott’s Superior Inn and Cabins >> 01/22

❄ Ontonagon / Porcupine Mountains Snowmobile Trail Report – Winter Storm Wrap-Up ❄

What a storm! This latest system absolutely delivered, with measured totals ranging from 14 to 24 inches across the region — all depending on which ZIP code you call home. Either way, this was a game-changer snowfall for the western U.P.

The result? Trails are as good as they’ve been in years.

Deep base, excellent coverage, and that soft, ride-anywhere feel that makes the Porkies and Ontonagon area so special. The fresh snow bonded well, filling in old imperfections and setting us up beautifully for grooming. If cold temps stick around (and they are), we’re in a sweet spot.

Expect:
• Outstanding coverage on main corridors
• Great conditions on secondary trails
• Off-trail areas loaded with snow (use caution and ride smart)
Another clipper is heading our way starting today bringing another foot of snow and brutal cold for the weekend. Stay inside if you can and keep all skin covered.

This is the kind of reset we wait all winter for — and right now, it’s prime time to ride the western U.P.

👉 Thinking about making a trip? Trails run right past Scott’s Superior Inn & Cabins — warm rooms, rider-friendly parking, and Lake Superior views when you’re done for the day. Book a stay and make a weekend out of these unreal conditions.

As always: ride right, ride safe, and we’ll see you on the trail. 🛷❄

A quick hitting, strong clipper continues to bring widespread moderate to heavy snow and high winds to the area this morning. After a brief lull in snow around daybreak, an increase in northerly winds and lake effect snow will return hazardous conditions to the north winds snowbelts this early afternoon.
Our attention then turns to a major winter storm set to impact the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region this weekend into early next week. Confidence is continuing to grow regarding significant snowfall accumulations (potentially record breaking) and blizzard conditions that may result in widespread impacts.
Please view this mornings informational briefing at the link below for additional details on both todays and this weekends storm systems.
