GRAND MARAIS AREA UPDATE via Grand Marais Sno-Trails Assoc. >> 01/08

What It Means to Be a Groomer for the Grand Marais Sno-Trails Association

Being a groomer is more than a job—it’s a commitment to community, safety, and the love of snowmobiling.
Our groomers are compensated at $2 per mile groomed, but the reality behind that number tells a much bigger story. Depending on the trail, a single grooming route can take 8 to 10 hours to complete. That time can vary due to necessary stops—clearing debris, addressing unexpected issues, carefully exiting the groomer when needed, and slowing or stopping entirely as snowmobilers pass by.

Grooming equipment moves at a steady 7 to 11 miles per hour, requiring patience, focus, and long hours in often challenging conditions.

While this is technically a paid position, our groomers do this work for something far more meaningful: their love of the sport and their dedication to our community. They balance grooming with full-time jobs, families, and personal commitments—choosing to sacrifice their time so the Crazy 8’s trails remain safe, rideable, and enjoyable for all of us.

Today, let’s take a moment to truly thank our groomers for the countless unseen hours they put in behind the scenes. ❄️

Some pictures from driver Gary and driver Jim. The trails held up really well today. Hopefully we will get more snow than rain with the system headed our way.

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> We know you'll pass by this post for snowfall today, but here on February 12th, 2026, it's quite a reflective moment to see just how far we have come this winter. Just a couple weeks ago it was lake effect snow every single day. Today, a light band of 1-3" near Munising is all we will need to write home about. We even tossed in some humor for those not in a designated snowfall zone. A couple slick spots will pop up along M-28 near Munising, and perhaps around Petoskey if a longer lake effect band happens to form, but this is more unlikely than likely.
Enjoy your rather snow-free day here in Michigan in early February. If you've read this far, comment your favorite memory of winter to this point.

GRAND MARAIS AREA UPDATE via Grand Marais Sno-Trails Assoc. >> 01/03

All trails have groomed in the last 24 hours. We are still dealing with drifting in the usual areas, especially east towards Pine Stump. Check your Groomer Tracker App for updates. All roadside trails near town have now been set, but it is early with minimal base so ride with caution.

GRAND MARAIS AREA UPDATE via Grand Marais Sno-Trails Assoc. >> 01/03

This is from a few days ago and is a picture of what our drivers have been dealing with since the big storm. That is why we sent 2 drivers per groomer for several runs. Thanks to the snowmobiliers that stopped and helped get this cleaned up.
