Sault Ste. Marie Trail Report – 02/09

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 02/09

Good Evening!

I just got a report from Jay F after his ride today-

“Just rode 49 out of Kinross , 49 thru the Soo, 8 over and thru Brimley and 480 back to Kinross. Other than the sides of the roads and even with the warm temps the trails are holding up. Solid snow coming down now should make for a good morning ride.
Thanks to the snowmobile clubs and the groomers putting in the time, makes it all worth the 6 hour drive up here.

Ride safe and STAY RIGHT”

Thanks Jay! Appreciate the report!

Hi all!

Another day of temps above freezing. Yuck. However, we did have groomers out on trail 8 and part of 889 this morning before it hit 30 degrees. The 3-6” that they called for hasn’t arrived and I don’t think it’s going to, although it is snowing right now.

A little cooler tomorrow and then more of the same- above freezing in the daytime, below freezing early morning and overnight so we’ll be out grooming when it makes sense to do so. Road sides and crossings remain bare right now but all accounts from riders are that the trails are holding up. Groomer Tracker will give you the latest on where and when groomers have been and and I’ll share as I get reports too. No water holes have opened up so that’s a win in my book.

Low weekday traffic helps too. Pic is from where trail 8 crosses the road near my house in the Soo, just about a half an hour ago. Looking a little dirty near the road but otherwise pretty good.
Watch for portentially icy corners and loose snow in spots.

We’ll keep updating as this wacky weather continues.

Thanks!

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 3/1/2026
Good evening! Turbo and Diane did an earlier run for a change today on trail 8 from Raco all the way to the Soo. While we typically do not like to groom during the day on a weekend, sometimes that’s what we need to do due to scheduling purposes. With cold temps and light sled traffic, it should help keep the snow a little looser for cooling.
It was a beautiful sunny day, and they saw a few groups out enjoying it, and some wildlife too.
As a reminder, this is a shared trail with ORVs less than 65” wide between the Soo and the Raco turn off. This is only shared trail in our area, and it isn’t wide enough for a SxS and groomer to pass on the trail. They encountered one SxS today that turned around so that they could continue on their way. We appreciate the driver moving so that they could pass.
Thank you to the Turbos! Looking awesome! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0301b #snowphotos

Happy March everyone! Hard to believe it’s the last (official) month of the season. And what a season it has been!
We had another record traffic Saturday, and our operators have been working so hard to keep things as smooth as we can for you.
After a long, cold, and windy day on the St Mary’s River at the radar run yesterday, Brimley Bill got a few hours of sleep and then headed out to hit the Mission Hill route. We call this route M40 for our reporting purpsoes. It’s 480 from M28, to 8, to Ranger Rd, and the 889 grade and 889 loop in the Raco and Bay Mills areas.
Here’s his report-
“I groomed M40 early this morning. Pretty much all of 889 was really beat up. I did my best to cut out all of the bumps. Some of the curves were so bad that I was not able to completely remove all of the bumps, (probably 90% gone.). The trail 8 Powerline and 480 RR Grade were still in pretty good shape. I smoothed out whatever bumps were there.”
Thank you, Bill! You’d never know now that hundreds of sleds ran those trails yesterday! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0301 #snowphotos

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 2/28/26
Good morning everyone!
While we certainly didn’t need the warm and sun yesterday, our hard working volunteers were itching to go as soon as temps dropped.
Our first report comes from Warren-
“We went out at 1 AM. Club member Steve & myself at 27 degrees did 480 from the Spile Dam turnaround, and 8 all the way to Brimley and back as well as the electric lines. I think everybody’s gonna be real happy with that, it cleaned up really well. I finished up at about 19° and then left the Groomer for turbo. Turbo is gonna hit the 889 loop and Brimley grade so I think everybody will be ready to go by about 7:30 - 8 o’clock for all of our trails out this way.”
Thank you, Warren & Steve!!❄️❄️❄️
Trail 8 from the Soo to Brimley will be done tonight, the city trails were done yesterday, and will be done again tomorrow night. I’ll update when I hear from the Kinross crew as well, but I know that everything was done on Thursday ahead of the warm up.
Be safe all and enjoy!

Sault Ste. Marie Trail Report – 02/09

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 02/09

Good morning!
I think it took Steve a few days to mentally recover from a stressful run down 49 on Monday. Definitely takes nerves of steel to cross the beaver pond the 1st time! He sent me this very detailed report from his perspective on how the run went-
“Thank you to Pete for following the groomer and providing live reports from our grooming run on Trail 49 Monday night.
As reported, Passenger Chris and I left town around 5:30pm Monday night and headed to Kinross on Trail 49. It was our first attempt of the season to go all the way through behind the Chippewa County Road Commision property and across the big beaver pond south of 12 Mile Road. I believe the last time Trail 49 was groomed between 3 Mile and 5 ½ Mile Roads was December 26th.
The trip started out great as we touched up the city trails on our way out of town. We busted through the big snowbank by the substation just south of town and headed south. I don’t think the trail could have been any rougher. We dug the front of the drag in deep and started knocking the tops off the bumps. Conditions were near perfect as we could carry a pile of snow with us and it would fall into the low spots as we moved along. It was a slow stretch as we were running only 3-4 mph.
We continued south and headed towards the swamp south of 12 Mile. Trip was uneventful as we crossed the pond and arrived in Kinross where we turn around.
We headed north on the return trip and couldn’t believe how nice the trails looked. The moguls we gone, and the trail was surprisingly smooth.
We made it to the beaver pond and started our way across. We were just clearing the bridge when I realized we had brown slush and water coming out from the drag. I had just enough time to warn Chris we were in water before we broke through with the groomer. Somehow, I managed to not panic and kept my speed constant. I didn’t want to stop and I didn’t want to spin the tracks with more throttle. There was a string of explicatives from both of us in the cab as we slowly climbed our way out. I had enough snow with me in the drag that it covered the hole we made on the way by.
Overall, Trail 49 is in very good shape. We will be able to groom everything except the pond itself moving forward. Another trip or two through the 3 Mile to 5 ½ Mile Road stretch will have it back to normal.
We are still receiving complaints of riders going off trail on Trail 49. The latest is from the Amish community just south of town. Several years ago, they purchased the land our trail runs across south of 6 Mile Road. It was pretty neat to allow our request to continue using their newly owned land for our snowmobile trail. They said no one person could decide to let us access their land. They had meetings within their community and they overwhelmingly supported keeping the trail where it was. As you ride through there, notice they ran their fence lines off the woods line leaving us enough room to safely groom through there.
There have been riders going off trail and getting into their pastures. Somehow, we need to keep everyone on our trails. If you ride with riders that continually break the rules, find new riding partners. We work way too hard keeping the trails we have.
Steve Lawson”
Great reminder Steve! Please always respect the landowners that so graciously allow access across their property. If you’re unsure whether or not it’s private property, just stay on the trail. It’s pretty simple, really. All of 49 follows private property so just follow the trail please! And let your riding partners know to do the same. After having this trail partially closed all season, riders know just how vital this trail is to our area. Let’s not lose it due to trespassing.
Thanks all! And thank you Steve for your dedication and detailed reports!
Word is that 49 is holding up great!
