Gaylord Area Trail Report – 01/19

Gaylord Bureau –

January 19, 2026

2:00 p.m.

We definitely don’t have a shortage of snow! Snow has continued to fall and trails are currently in good condition. We had a busy weekend with lots of riding and it may be bumpy by Lakes of the North and Johannesburg. Trail 7 is looking great! Be safe out there and have fun!

Please note, due to last April’s ice storm, there are logging operations in several locations. The newest locations are around Van Tyle and North Townline Road (Gaylord) and the intersection of trails 7 & 4 (Waters) toward Dodge Lake. Logging is also taking place on trail #4 along the powerline that crosses Evergreen Drive and near Turtle Lake Road (East of Gaylord). The logging trucks may use the trail as a road at times. Proceed with caution in these areas. Trails are still passable and the groomers are doing their best to smooth the trails out in these areas.

If this winter is anything like last year, it’s going to be another epic one! Want to be ready? Get a free trail map delivered right to your mailbox and plan your adventure!

Check out a live view of trail # 7 here.

A few things to remember about our groomers and trails:

– Groomers are out there to help you have a better riding experience and always have the right of way.
– Please move off the trail when groomers are approaching and allow them to safely pass.
– If you approach a groomer from behind, kindly wait for the operator to signal you to pass.
– Grooming can take place at any time during the day or night, so stay alert.
– Always ride on the right side of the trail.
– Ride safe and ride sober.

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Final snowfall totals have been released from our blizzard of March 15th-17th, 2026 here in Michigan. Do note, some locations are approximated due to data gaps in the Upper Peninsula..... #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskeyFinal snowfall totals have been released from our blizzard of March 15th-17th, 2026 here in Michigan. Do note, some locations are approximated due to data gaps in the Upper Peninsula.

No doubt the forecast lived up to its insanity, with many locations getting over 40" of snow across the central Upper Peninsula, and 8-10 foot snow drifts to make things even more extreme. In terms of forecast verification, our forecast did hit the 80%+ accuracy threshold we strive for after each event. Our final verification was 83%, and most of the the misses were where the system shifted slightly south to give parts of the northern Lower Peninsula greater than 24", and parts of the western Upper Peninsula much less. Anything over 18" of snow is just "a lot" at this point anyways, so we aren't stressing too badly about the miss in the Lower Peninsula near the Mackinac Bridge. Lake effect zones in SW Michigan did verify, as text was featured under the forecast that a couple spots would see locally higher amounts.

Overall, this will be a storm we won't soon forget, which adds to the list of wild weather we've experienced in Michigan over the last two weeks. If you have any additional snowfall reports to add to the list that are not affected by drifting, drop them in the comments below here on X or Facebook. A new two-day record was also broken at the NWS office in Marquette of 36"+ with this blizzard, which is just one record smashed by this blizzard.

Gaylord Bureau –

January 17, 2026

Trails are currently in good condition with some icy patches. Groomers have been out smoothing them down and plan on running regularly this weekend. There is the chance for daily accumulation for the next week, so conditions should stay good. Be safe out there and have fun!

Please note, due to last April’s ice storm, there are logging operations in several locations. The newest locations are around Van Tyle and North Townline Road (Gaylord) and the intersection of trails 7 & 4 (Waters) toward Dodge Lake. Sledheads of Frederic – 01/18

I would say we had another 5 inches during saturday, sleds came thru in waves and its been a slow start this morning. Sounds like more snow coming in the next couple days. NWS says only another inch today but its coming down still now. I have heard several stories which is dissheartening. Tickets handed out near the trail at Tinkers for people riding on M road which is M 93, if you ride past the actual trail and still stay down in the ditch to get to Tinkers that is illegal. I dont know the right answer on if there is a legal way to get there. Its only a matter of about 600 feet and if you are down in the ditch its not like you are on the shoulder of the road. I am going to look into this. Also heard of a ticket north of frederic for doing a rolling stop thru a stop sign on the trail. I just wanted to say a little about this. Thanks for checking in. Pete
