TRAIL REPORT February 8, 2022
OPERATORS TRYING THEIR BEST!
A few more inches of new snowfall with the trail system in an overall fair to good condition. We are continuing the down equipment struggle with help from neighboring clubs but the entire system is getting groomed in a 24 hour period. With only one machine running the core of our trail system it has been very hard to keep up with and getting choppy throughout the day. We are doing our best but the smaller, lighter equipment is making it very difficult. Stay alert as trouble areas have had a few pockets develop throughout the day. Thank our neighboring clubs for helping us keep your trails rideable by grooming additional miles (Trenary Northern Trails, Schoolcraft County Motorized Trails Association and Big Bay De Noc Snowmobile Club). MUNISING AREA UPDATE via TNT Trenary Northern Trails –
Trail holding up well with cold temperatures. Need more snow! Grooming will continue daily as long as conditions allow. Possible warmup next week. We will adjust as needed to allow for the best results. Ride right and ride safe!

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> AM lake effect snow showers will diminish across the east, but additional snow showers will be possible this afternoon across the northern U.P. After warm and dry days Sunday and Monday, incoming rainfall is expected by late Monday afternoon. High temperatures will top off in the 40s and 50s by Sunday and Monday. MUNISING AREA UPDATE via TNT Trenary Northern Trails >> Short run today to make sure our east end is smooth and conditions couldn’t be better. Possibly making one more full run before the end of season to make sure we are right on track to finish the season out. Reports have been coming in that the trail is pretty smooth. Grooming will end, but the entire trail will be open through the 31st. Private land closes across the state on the 1st of April, so feel free to keep riding, but please respect private property as land use permits do not allow clubs to keep the trail open. Michigan is going to showcase all seasons for today, March 26th, 2026. If you're heading north of M-55, a wintry mix will greet you. Snow totals of an inch, perhaps more will be possible, and a snow map will be out in a bit to showcase totals on a statewide basis. Meanwhile, summer is here temporarily as showers and storms move in by late afternoon south of Grand Rapids and Flint. High temperatures will be in the 60s, and even low-70s, especially south of I-94. More warmth means more fuel for storms though, so on a day like today, you should be rooting against warmer high temperatures to avoid severe weather. Speaking of temperatures, just an insane gradient from north to south. High temperatures in the low-20s for the Keweenaw Peninsula, while areas just south of the Michigan state line jump to near 80°F. Precipitation will start early up north, while southern Michigan doesn't start seeing shower activity until afternoon. More details to come in a bit on our severe weather, but the peak timing along and south of I-94 for severe weather will be after 3 pm EDT. Main severe weather hazard today will be very large hail, so it's probably a good idea to protect your valuables today if you're in the southern two rows of counties, just out of an abundance of caution. To be honest, it's almost copy and paste of Tuesday with snow passing by up north again, but today features warmer temperatures for almost the entire state. As you can see, high temperatures in the 50s and 60s will be on display for everyone minus the eastern UP and northern LP. Partly cloudy skies south, while mostly cloudy skies and some isolated snow showers pass by to the north. Snowfall accumulations will be light and brief. Cold spot of the day will be Sault Ste. Marie at 34°F, while the warm spot of the day will be near New Buffalo in Berrien County at 69°F. A 35° swing from north to south. Winds will be gusting between 15-25 mph primarily across the Lower Peninsula today, with a few gusts to 35 mph possible along Lake Michigan. Small craft, take note.
