Sault Ste. Marie Trail Report – 03/14

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 03/14

Good evening!

Bill was out on the Raco – Brimley route today. This is 8, the power lines, and part of 480.

Here’s his report-
“I groomed the power lines in RACO, trail #8 from RACO to Brimley, and a portion of #480 (Spile Dam Rd).
The trails are really holding up well. Getting to the trails is an issue, with all the snow gone from sections along roads, but once on the trails, they are looking good. If we receive the forecasted winter storm later this week, the trails will be in great shape for the weekend.”

Fingers crossed! Thanks Bill! We’re not ready to hang up the tracks yet! ❄️🍀🤞

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/28/25 5:30 PM update
Using this to gauge our starting point for the incoming storm here in the Soo. The location for this measurement is just off of trail 8 as you head west out of the Soo, about 3 miles from downtown. Lake effect snow can and does vary widely, so we appreciate any snow reports tomorrow and on.
We can hear the ice hitting the trees and hard surfaces currently. Businesses are closing early and some are already closing for tomorrow.
It appears that it will switch to snow around 10pm tonight when temps also start to drop.
PLEASE be safe. First responders are asking people not to travel unless absolutely necessary. #soo #soo1228 #snowphotos12/28/25 5:30 PM update

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/27/25
Good evening! I just got back from a ride from the Soo to Hulbert and back and the trails are very busy, as expected.
Unfortunately, grooming is on pause for us for a couple of reasons- 1) it’s too warm for it to make any difference whatsoever 2) we need more snow (and it’s coming!)
🚨 Please take note- the Pisten Bully that stays in Raco and does the Raco/Brimley/Bay Mills areas (8 west of Brimley, 480 from the Raco gate to 8, and 889) has a leaking hydraulic seal and had to be brought into the Soo barn tonight. We are awaiting the part and anticipate that it may be down until Tuesday🚨
Trails will be a bit sloppy with the warmer temps and higher traffic.
The snow is soft and corners are icy, so please be careful. We heard of 2 accidents today, unfortunately. We are hopeful that the riders are ok❤️‍🩹
Significant lake effect snow is expected tomorrow night into Tuesday, and we’ll roll groomers out as soon as it makes sense to do so.
Please ride safe, and ride sober. There are lots of families out there and we all need to work together to ensure we can all make it back safely.
Thanks all! Snow and colder temps are on the way and we’ll keep you posted! 🙌🏼❄️❄️❄️ #soo #snowphotos #soo1227

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Midwest Weather >> ~(Updated) Snowfall Forecast Sunrise Sunday-Sunrise Tuesday~
A major winter storm is expected to bring significant snowfall to portions of the region. Most of the accumulating snow will be along and north of I-80. No matter how much snow will fall, there will be strong northwest winds that will create blowing and drifting snow. Travel north of I-80 will be near impossible at times. Some road closures are possible along and north of I-90 given greater accumulation and more persistent blizzard-like conditions. Heaviest snowfall totals through sunrise Tuesday (there will be more after) will be along Lake Superior. Snowfall rates could exceed 2" an hour at times due to lake enhancement. Expect over a foot in most areas along the lakeshore before dropping as you get closer to the WI border. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea #gaylord #cadillac #benzie #traversecity #petoskey~OUTDATED~

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/27/25
Good morning!
No real significant snow in our area yesterday, though we did pick up a general 4-5” inches over much of our area.
We did have groomers out yesterday in the Raco, Bay Mills, and Brimley areas, on 8, 889, and part of 480, as well as on trail 49 from the Soo to 12 mile, and also on 49 from Devils Hill to Kinross and the 494 loop. We skipped the thin section south of 12 to preserve the new snow and let riders pack it. City trails will be done tonight if needed, as well as trail 8 from the Soo to Brimley.
I’ll be going for a ride later today and I’ll report what I see.
Significant snow is forecasted for tomorrow through Tuesday, along with high winds so that could get interesting.
Remember, we are on Groomer Tracker, subscribe today!
Ride safe! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo

KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 3/14

Holy wah! 🤩 Definitely one of my favorite photos ever sent in by a rider is the first one in this group of shots from Ryan Bennet’s 377 mile ride today! (Be sure to click on it so it enlarges)

A lot of you probably saw one of our posts from Ryan’s ride yesterday, if you missed it can be found here https://www.facebook.com/100070685216408/posts/247924587573713/

Believe it or not, Ryan’s ride today seems to have “topped” that one! Ryan shared these AMAZING photos and details of his ride today! Ryan said, “Left Parkview – New Lodge and Grill in Twin Lakes at 7:30 this morning and headed south to Bruce Crossing for breakfast at Char’s Cafe. Trail 3 was beautiful all the way!
Jumped on 8 and headed East, flat and fast. Covered a lot of ground in a hurry. Grabbed fuel at the The Sidnaw Station then ran to Ishpeming by noon. Continued on to Marquette, and ran down to Adventure Centre Arctic Cat. Turned around there and headed back “home”(meaning an area of the U.P. that Ryan is more familiar riding!)

Got fuel at Michigamme Market on the way back, then one more stop in Sidnaw before running up to Rousseau Bar because ya know…… its never too far!

Landed in Bergland tonight at Lake Gogebic Motel after coming back to Twin Lakes for fuel at Krupp’s Mini Mart and a quick stop in Greenland for food at the The Pit Stop Bar & Grill! Special thanks to The U.P. Superior Snowmobile Club today! Trail 3 was perfect all day and I don’t think I’ve ever said that before!
377 miles today and only about 10 bad ones. One small section of 8 that the groomer can’t get to. Wet area. Everything else was easily great-excellent”

What a day Ryan! Thank you S❄️ much for sharing!

The forecast for all of these areas tgat Ryan has been riding is for over a goid foot of fresh snow to fall Thursday-Saturday too! 🤞 We can’t imagine what epic conditions there would be if the forecast rings true!

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> Alright Michigan.. Let's dive right back into it. We have yet another system coming our way for Sunday into Monday which will bring SEVERAL different impacts to portions of the state... #miweather #keweenaw #westernupAlright Michigan.. Let's dive right back into it. We have yet another system coming our way for Sunday into Monday which will bring SEVERAL different impacts to portions of the state.

Let's start with JUST SUNDAY. This system begins as rain Sunday morning for lower Michigan, with a bit of mixed precipitation possible further north.. think near Mackinac areas.

Sunday afternoon, we will see an uptick in rainfall intensity and even see some thunderstorms across central and southern lower Michigan, with a severe weather risk sitting just off to our south during the afternoon. During this Sunday afternoon period, snow will also begin to ramp up in the Upper Peninsula while northern lower Michigan and the eastern UP will continue to see a mixed precipitation.

Sunday night is when things start to get wild. Temperatures across lower Michigan will drop from 40s and 50s down to the 20s in a matter of 2-4 hours. Keep in mind, it will be raining prior to this temperature drop, so a situation may unfold where wet surfaces will freeze over and become icy. This could be another scenario of what we call a flash freeze.

This concludes SUNDAY'S "part 1" forecast.

This system WILL CONTINUE into MONDAY as a lake effect snow AND wind event.

After midnight and into Monday morning, lake effect snow will ramp up across much of the state, with wind gusts also increasing to 40-50+mph across ALL of Michigan. Major snow accumulations are possible for lake effect belts of western and northern lower Michigan, and much of the UP during Monday. Given strong winds, lake effect bands and snow squalls will likely drift into eastern Michigan which may lightly accumulate in localized areas. A winter storm watch is already in effect for nearly ALL of the UP in anticipation of this system.

In summary, this is a two part system spanning 48+ hours with A LOT going on. We will host a live briefing tonight at 7pm to talk it through.

Expect a full forecast package to be released throughout tomorrow which will likely include first call graphics for:

-Snowfall totals
-Rainfall amounts
-Thunderstorm/Severe weather outlook
-Wind map
-Icing amounts

And infographics on:

-Potential flash freeze
-Snow squalls
-Power outage possibilities
-Timing map
-Traffic map

Stay tuned!
