SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 01/08
Good morning all! Update as of noon on 1/8/24
We are just as excited as everyone else for the incoming storm, and with it the potential that we can hopefully get grooming! We need a good foot to be able to get the machines rolling, so please be patient. I promise I will update as things unfold, as always.
There are a few things I know with certainty that are very important to mention. So here we go-
Trail 49 from Alberta Lane just south of the Soo, all the way to almost Gaines Highway in Kinross is wet over much of the area. Unfortunately, someone got a 4 wheeler stuck in an area where there is not a gate between 8 and 9 mile, and it needs to be extracted which undoubtedly will make quite the mess. Thanks to that fine human for making a boneheaded decision that further delays our progress. It’s a snowmobile only trail, and they never should have been in there, and no, it wasn’t the land owner.
The gates on 49 from 12 mile south to Gaines Highway remain closed as it is far too wet in there as of right now. Snow and cold will help, but even after the gates are opened, it will be quite some time before we can get a groomer in there without sinking it. Please plan for this closure.
Trail 480 from Raco through the Spile Dam to 472 has some significant ruts from a truck driven by another really smart individual. IF we get enough snow to groom, we will do the best we can to get in there and smooth them out.
All other areas should be pretty solid as soon as we get more snow.
There is still a very large washout on the old trail leaving Bay Mills casino, but we have rerouted the trail along side of the road, so please follow the new trail. That washout will swallow you and your machine whole.
If we get this snow, we will report as we get rolling. I will also try to get out on my sled after work each day to check trails.
Thanks all! Let the games begin! ❄️❄️❄️

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/24/25 Merry Christmas Eve! A curious deer checked out our snow gauge overnight. A bit of a warm up kept groomers parked yesterday, but cold has returned this morning, and there’s a decent amount of snow in the forecast in the coming days. Things were super flat before the warm up yesterday, so once again we have an excellent base. We will keep you posted! Enjoy time with your families and friends 🎄❄️ #soo #snowphotos... WEATHER UPDATE via Midwest Weather >> I'm going up north to the U.P of Michigan on Friday to chase a potentially significant lake effect snow event from late Saturday night through Tuesday. Snowfall accumulations could be 1-2', if not higher, as high-res model guidance comes in when we get closer. Another lake-effect snow event is increasingly likely behind an arctic front next Wednesday night through Friday, which we will need to keep an eye on. #miweather #keweenaw#westernup#marquette#munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsarea#gaylord#cadillac#benzie#traversecity#petoskeyI'm going up north to the U.P of Michigan on Friday to chase a potentially significant lake effect snow event from late Saturday night through Tuesday. SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 12/21/25 Groomer Jay and I just finished the city trails. Aside from the car on trail 8 near Ashmun Bay, things look really good. We saw a little water on the trail to Kewadin as pictured, but that was honestly the worst part of the whole run. It was snowing hard for the last hour of our run. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well things held up after the warm up last week. We keep saying it, but we truly are very pleased with where things are this early seaon. Let’s hope it continues! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #snowphotos... See MoreSee Less
Here`s a quick update from yesterday cause I promised. Both groups reported that the water levels seemed to be lower than normal…which is good. The guys that hit the Point trail side ran just where we have a water problem on the far NW side. They said it turned out better than expected and its actually ridable. The snow is thin of course, but with the snow we are expecting tomorrow it just might be good to go shortly.
The group of 4 guys that hit the Falls trail said it is still WAY too muddy yet and the gates remain closed….don`t even think about it for now. The weather guessers are calling for a winter storm watch starting tomorrow morning and are saying we might get upwards of 6-10 inches through out the next couple days.
So there you have it. Not quite ready yet but gettin close. If we can get a foot of snow outa this next system we will be even closer.
I`m headin out the door and goin South with 3 other guys.

PARADISE AREA UPDATE via Paradise Area Night Riders www.paradiseareanightriders.org >> 12/22/25 12 degrees this morning under a mostly clear sky. Here`s the trail report on how things went yesterday..... We took 2 machines w/o drags and headed out on the Falls trail #45. Unfortunately I can`t give you any good news. It was U.G.L.Y. In fact, da boss said it was the worst he`s ever seen....bummer. He did say you could make it from the Upper Falls to the Lower to get fuel at the Lower but be careful. From the Lower Falls to Paradise IS NOT PASSABLE!!! There is a video on our FB page to show you how bad it was. We need more snow and cold to even try this again in a groomer. Word of warning.....it is ILLEGAL to ride on M-123 from town to the Falls! Nothing else was run, we need more snow. The Point trails are ridable and the Pine Stump trail is also but thin in a lot of spots. We haven`t ran south on trail #8 since last weekend either. Simply put, we need more snow. This weeks forecast doesn`t look that promising for any great amounts either. Sorry for all the bad news......just being honest. I`ll let ya`ll know when things start improving. LET `ER SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Groomer Chris #paradise #newberry ... See MoreSee Less
