Frederic / Gaylord Area Trail Report – Sledheads of Frederic – 03/31

FREDERIC / GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic – 03/31

This is really the end now. March 31st the official end of the riding season. I dont think we will forget this one for a long time. There have still been die hards trying to squeak out a little more in the u.p. but even they suffered with the rest of us this poor season. Last weekend Cliff and his wife tried the u.p at Brimeley and they stopped by on their way back. They got a little ride in up there. I just happened to be there so I got a couple pics of them. Also I had a nice message from Jim Wilkerson in Pennsylvania last week and it was good to hear from him. He usually comes our way to ride but of course I didnt see him this season. I am coming at you this easter morning from my cabin down at Wellston. There was certainly nothing going on in Frederic so I have been here for five days. Did alot of driving around and saw many sled trails that I had not seen before but of course they looked more like mud bog trails. Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville still had snow on it and they were actually still skiining there. Seeing the white hill was a pleasant surprise. I always say I go to Sledheads prison on December first and then I get paroled on the end of the day on March 31st. I guess this season I got early parole for good behavior. We will have to see what happens next season. This year I pretty much gave up and if there was rideable snow I was open other wise I just put the closed sign up. At least I had a few good trips during that time frame. As usual if you happen to come thru this summer and my truck or car is there stop in and say hi. Hopefully I will get some good get aways in there. Also remember I am still a Realtor with Century 21 Northland in Grayling so if you are looking to buy or sell Real Estate give me a call. Thanks for checking in and remember start early with the snow chants. MO MO NAH NAH CHEE CHEE NAH….. Pete

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Gaylord Michigan >> A cold night is on tap as temps fall into the teens and perhaps single digits across much of northern Michigan, especially in areas heavily impacted by the recent ice storm. This could lead to dangerous conditions for those without power or a safe source of heat. Does anyone have any information that would explain why Antrim County was excluded from the the governor’s State of Emergency? Are there any numbers showing ice accumulation for Antrim as compared to surrounding areas?

WEATHER UPDATE via Meteorologist Brad Sugden >> From Billy Miller in Gaylord. Absolutely wild how trees bend to the ground under the immense weight of the ice.
Did you know a 30ft diameter tree can weight up to 7,000 extra lbs with that amount of ice on it? Crazy.
More frequent posting angers the Facebook algorithm. We can fight back by having you like or react to this post even if you don't actually "like" the content. (who does in this case, right?) But, it helps Facebook put the information out there in more news feeds. Heart, like, sad, anger reactions all work. Thanks! #miweather #gaylord

Sault Ste. Marie Trail Report – 03/31

SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 03/31

3/31- Good morning everyone! Happy Easter!
Yesterday, we had the opportunity to gather about half of our groomer operators together for our groomer appreciation dinner. We did it a little earlier than normal so that those who don’t live here year round could attend.
Thanks so much to all who donated so that we could do this for these volunteers! We had a wonderful dinner, lots of laughs, and got to check out the latest addition to our fleet- a brand new 2024 Tucker!
It also just so happened to be Turbo’s birthday, and Dennis P’s birthday 2 days before. Happy birthday guys!
While we all wish this season was a whole lot better, we are so grateful for all of our volunteers that were ready to go the few times that we received enough snow to groom. This season, it was impossible to stick to a grooming schedule. We had to be ready when and if it snowed, and many times that meant asking a volunteer to come in on an “off” day, or at an off time. These guys were always ready and willing to adjust, many times missing out on their own opportunity to ride so that they could make the trails great for others.
As always, we had volunteers doing many things behind the scenes. Buck is one of our unsung heroes, always in the barn working on something to help improve our operations. Our president, Tom, does so much in our community, donating his time to many organizations that help strengthen our relations in the community. Mike and Dave are our groomer bosses, and they have to make some hard decisions, and deal with many scheduling conflicts and maintenance issues. Alicia is our treasurer and manages all of the finances. An extra tough task in a season like this where there’s still a lot outgoing, but not a lot of incoming funds. Steve, Ryan, Pete and a few others are out most weekends in the off season working on signage, and other trail improvements. Dave, Pete, and Chris have worked on creative ways to help raise funds such as shirt sales, the I-500 booth, and our annual Dice Run fundraiser. Special shout out to Warren and Steve L for clearing a crazy amount of trees after the last big snow fall came earlier this March.
We so appreciate all of the support from our volunteers throughout the year! And we couldn’t do it without the support of our members, and all who contribute in any way that you can! We are especially thankful to all of the amazing landowners who allow access for our recreation!
We look forward to putting together some brushing events, and some fundraisers in the off season so that we are ready to rock again when old man winter shows up next season.
Thank you all! If you’d like to join or donate to our 100% volunteer, 501c3 association, you can do so at www.sootrails.org
Stay tuned for our off season updates!

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 3/31/25
A couple of our volunteers, Lane and Dennis, made it out for an 180 mile ride from the Pickford area all the way to Cut River and places in between today, even up trail 49 from Kinross!
They definitely encountered some low hanging branches, but no major downed trees and they were surprised how well the trails have held up!
Love to see our hard working volunteers out enjoying themselves on this last official day of an amazing season!
Are you done riding for the season? Where was your last ride? #soo #snowphotos

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 3/31/25
Last day of the official season, and oh what a season it has been!
We did see significant icing last night, followed by about 2” of snow. I’m sure the trails are icy under the snow. It looks like areas to our northwest such as Paradise and Pine Stump got mostly snow. I would imagine that there are low hanging and broken branches and downed trees in spots, but we were very fortunate based on what I have seen in the Gaylord and Alpena areas.
Please keep your eye on those clubs pages. They may need some assistance in the coming weeks. I’ll share if I hear of anything.
We got very lucky here. If you’re out and about getting those last rides in, please be safe!
Remember, trails on public lands do not close, but will not be groomed. After today, please be mindful of where you are riding to be sure you are not trespassing. We will get gates closed as soon as we can on private property.
Ride safe! Thank you to all who have visited our area and supported or local businesses, to all of our members, donors, our volunteers, and especially the landowners who so graciously allow access on their property! We appreciate you all!
Thank you for helping make it a great season!! #soo #snowphotos3/31/25
