Grand Marais Trail Report – 03/21

Well, the St. Patty’s storm was not a disappointment for us snow lovers! The official storm total since 6 PM EDT Monday afternoon is 29.2 inches of fresh snow. Snow depth is 62 inches or 5 feet 2 inches! Many areas actually received more than the official tally. Total snowfall for the season is around 250 inches +/-! I was checking weather stations and storm totals and found a NWS graphic that showed our entire trail system received the most snow over a widespread area in the whole state, not just in pockets. Pretty Awesome! The trails are in fabulous shape with a fresh, thick layer of powder and the boondocking, well, it’s simply going to be incomparable! Remember to carry a shovel if you venture off trail, you will need it. It’s still blowing and there will be drifts in the open areas on Trails 8 East, 8 West in the plains, and 89 along the lakeshore.

The temperatures are supposed to start warming up into the low to mid 30’s this weekend so if you are itching for one last hoorah, now is the time! Traffic is light and there are plenty of rooms available. If you are having any doubts about making the trip, put them aside! Just load UP and plan on some of the best riding of your life! We will have snow well into April but grooming ends on the 31st at midnight.

Again, we want to thank Seney Snowmobile Association for grooming two of our trails the last two nights in addition to your own. You guys are awesome! The techie for Piston Bully has been working on the problem with the 8 Ball Express. Parts are being flown in to Pellston airport and he hopes to be back early this afternoon, and hopefully, have her back on the trail tonight. Sno-Sanity is now in Newberry getting a new turbo so she’ll be out of commission for a few days. Thanks go out to Wolf Creek for providing transportion to get her there.

Base: 36 or more inches

Snowfall Past 24 hours: 15 inches

Last Grooming: Last Night and early this morning

Current Trail Conditions: Excellent
