Newberry Trail Report – Halfway Lake Resort – 03/12

Yesterday we had 3-4 inches of wet snow and then temps were upper 30s with fog and light misting. Today it is snowing, things have frozen up and the forecast looks cold the next few days. Groomers will run when temps are below freezing.

Halfway Lake Resort – March 10

Trail access from resort. Took this picture today after our “warm up.”

We don’t have an accurate trail report until riders return today. I can tell you that we have 26 inches on the snow gauge and our driveway and our county dirt road are still covered with snow/ice -very minimal dirt showing in a handful of spots.

There is a ton of snow and a deep base, the question will be are the trails icy and how icy? If we get the predicted snow things will be in great shape and off trail riding is prime.

The trails into/out of town were becoming snirty and bumpy on Sunday, I am unsure how they fared after yesterday’s warm spell. Ride safe and have fun! We will update after speaking with riders.

We are located 12 mi NW of Newberry and 7 miles S of Pinestump Junction. Between Grand Marais and Paradise.

Thank you for your phone calls.

Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 03/12

Looks like winter is still here!!! We have received fresh snowfall across the area, anywhere from 4-12 inches, and it is still coming down. Temperatures will be upper 20’s in the daytime and nighttime lows 10 to 20. Now is a good time to take advantage of riding while traffic is down and trails are still in good condition.

The Gogebic Range Trail Authority: Reports trails are good with a few icy spots on hills and corners. With daily and nightly grooming ongoing, conditions will continue to be good. There is a trouble spot on 160. A groomer broke through a creek so use caution signs are posted.

The Lake Gogebic groomers report: Our area got about a foot of new snow. Snowmobilers in the area are reporting the trails in very good condition with low traffic. There have been reports of snowmobiles running on the railroad tracks through Bergland. Watch for trail signs and stay on snowmobile trail. The two run right next to each other and it is an easy mistake to make-but you will be ticketed if caught riding on the railroad tracks.

The Watersmeet groomers report: They have received 6-8 inches wet heavy snow. Conditions are good to excellent. The bare spots are covered and grooming is ongoing.

Keep in mind groomers can be out day or night so watch out for them and please pull over or slow down and wait for the operator to signal you by.

Please be careful on corners as you know several Michigan Trail signs have been discontinued. These signs are posted on our trail map. PLEASE BE SAFE!!!!
