Indian River Trail Report – 01/06

Sorry it took me so long to update–I had to thaw my fingers out…Yes, it’s cold here. It’s about 6 degrees and there is some wind to drop that number below zero. All the schools far and wide are closed today because of the cold. But honestly I can remember as a kid waking up to -20 temperatures for several days in a row and school was open. I guess we don’t bundle up like we used to…Back to trail conditions. Trails are in super shape and have been groomed nightly. We had some engine trouble with the Kubota last night so tonight the guys will double-team on the New Holland. Traffic is extremely light out there, so if you’ve got the time and the warm gear go take a spin! To join or renew Grooming Club membership, send your email to info@indianriversnowmobiling.org or visit www.indianriversnowmobiling.org. Thanks to your support we’re building our groomer ‘barn’ and will soon have a new facility where we can store and work on the equipment. Construction is underway now at our location on US 27, just a stone’s throw north of the DNR Trailhead at White Road in Indian River!

St. Ignace Trail Report – 01/06

Very good, to excellent over the whole system. A big snow at the end of last week gave us 10-14′ from Cut River to Trout Lake, tapering to 1′ in Iggy. That groomed out fantastic. With our groomer out of Iggy down we did get a little rough coming into town, and with the big snow up North we could not cover everything with the Brevort tractor. We worked on #6 in Iggy for 7 hours Sat morning and got it back running. Big thanks to Randy for taking the extra time to fix everything up to get our base back in fine shape. After last nights groom the South loop is very good condition and we are waiting for some new to layer on top.

As you know, it is going to be super cold over the next few days. Trails are smooth, so we are not going to run Monday, and probably Tuesday night. There shouldn’t be hardly any traffic, and no need to put the equipment out and risk freezing up again.

Loggers are plowing some roads around the trail stop area, and a section of the cedarville connector, they should be passable with no problem.

I will report that the treeline to Mackinac Island went up on Sunday. I have not heard if the ice is in good shape, I will not report that it is safe to cross, but I said I will report the fact that the trees are up. Always check ice conditions locally before venturing out onto any frozen lake.
