KEWEENAW PENINSULA UPDATE via Keweenaw Trail Reports – 3/7

The season is far from over! Spring riding is a favorite for many! 🙋‍♀️

Some helpful information for those that are still planning trips to ride!

Keweenaw County has received over 270 inches of snow this 2021/22 season. The previous season, 2020/21, only had 188 inches for the entire season. There is well over 3 feet of snow left on the ground in most areas as you can see on the snow depth map found here: https://www.weather.gov/mqt/snowdepth_keweenaw

Spring riding means that on days when temps are above freezing or the consistency of the snow is not conducive for grooming, grooming operations will temporarily be suspended. This happened over the past weekend. Saturday afternoon grooming operations were suspended and they resumed last night(Sunday). Groomer operators had the entire trail system freshly groomed by this afternoon. All reports from riders have been very positive today!

Kenneth Lehreaux has one of the Pisten Bullies out grooming tonight and trails are turning out nicely! Temps tonight are forecasted to be in the teens with real feels in the single digits. Lower temps and light traffic should allow trails to set up good tonight.

Tomorrow the high temperature is forecasted to be mid to high 30s in areas of the Keweenaw. This could mean that grooming operations will be suspended again, but no worries as Wednesday’s temps are back in the low 20’s! The Keweenaw Snowmobile Club groomer operators are doing an amazing job keeping the trails in the best possible shape!

Hey I just wanted to give you guys a shout-out for having amazing trails. Six of us trailered from southwestern Ontario and unloaded in saint Ignace. We rode up to big bay and copper harbour. We had to cut the trip short two days due the forecasted rain for the weekend but we still put on over 1000 miles. The trails are amazing in Michigan, well marked, and very well maintained. The towns all seemed relatively snowmobile friendly (except marquette) and it was nice having 91 non ethanol fuel easily accessible everywhere. The bars are great, the hotels were easy to get to, the dealers were easy to find, the other riders were very friendly. We also appreciate the hand signals from oncoming riders and found 98% of riders signal. It’s great to see. We really enjoyed the week and will definitely be back next year with more people.

Most of northern Michigan got hit with a mix of high temperatures and rain, followed by wet, heavy snow over the weekend. It’s snowing today and we have a chance of 2-5 inches in our area. The new snow has freshened things up again, but we need more to get the trails in better condition. Groomers were out Saturday before the rain hit and trails were smooth but have a low base. They are currently in fair condition and may be icy or bare in places with heavy traffic.

Check back for updates, as the weather can be erratic this time of the year! We’re hopeful to get more snow to enjoy some late winter/early spring riding.

Sledheads of Frederic – 3/7

Holy Cow , is winter back, after a severe meltdown this past weekend, with a lot of rain and waking up sunday morning to rain and wind along with 46 degrees it pretty much wiped things out. Here it is now monday morning at 11 and so far we have had about 4 inches of kind of a wet snow at 30 degrees outside. I have been plowing snow and lots of slushy water. I have not seen any sleds and I saw big puddles on what trails I passed on the way here this morning. Pics below I took outside of Sledheads this morning including Lake Sledheads out back. Snow is still falling, hard to tell how long it will last. We havent had any decent riding in March in a few years so who knows for sure if it will make it back. I was closed all weekend here as conditions were so poor. Thats about it for now but I want to send a Happy Birthday shoutout to Clifford Mcclain down in Ohio……….Thanks for checking in. Pete

FREDERIC - GAYLORD AREA UPDATE via Sledheads of Frederic , Michigan Snowmobiling >> Frosty and crunchy at 4 degrees on friday morning in Frederic, I saw the groomer heading out on 47 trail by the high school and 2 sleds right at that corner too. Already been several sleds in this morning and I made an early trip to the Sled Shed to get me some carbides for my ski doo. Those carbides have been on back order all season and I got the last set of 6 inch from Sled Shed. I wanted to make sure I get to ride again. I am happy to say that several riders told me that all trails they were on were well groomed. That is good to hear. The OSSA group were in here yesterday afternoon and they are staying up in Gaylord this year and at least we have great snow this year. Thanks Gary Hines for stopping in with everyone. Already sold the 4 pair of Gauntlets that I had this morning. My frederic-mi.com site is messed up again and Rebecca is on that. Gusty northwest winds plus continued powdery lake effect snow will lead to significant reductions in visibility with whiteouts at times through this afternoon, especially in open areas where snow can easily blow around.
