SAULT STE. MARIE UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association – 02/16

Good morning all!

No significant snow yet. Just a dusting to cover the ice. We have one groomer out on 889, seeing how things will go. As soon as I have an update, I’ll let you know. Future snow is up in the air still. I see a possibility of 3” which will help with road shoulders and crossings which are our biggest issue right now as they are bare. Lake Effect is also possible with the temps and winds working in our favor.

I have no way of knowing what all 103 miles of our trails look like until we can get groomers through all of them. If you are out riding, be careful and know that trails are likely icy, especially in corners. Please let us know what you are seeing if you head out. Pics and videos are very helpful!

This will be my last update until I get word from the groomers.

Stay tuned!

WEATHER UPDATE via US National Weather Service Marquette Michigan >> Mixed precipitation, mainly of rain and snow, will spread west to east across the UP tonight into tomorrow morning. Pockets of freezing rain could also mix in at onset and lead to a light glaze of ice on roadways for the Tuesday morning commute. Heavy lake effect snow will then be reinvigorated with a secondary cold front Tuesday night into Wednesday morning across the N and NW wind snow belts. This will combine with northerly winds of 40 to 50 mph, resulting in blowing snow and near zero visibilities for the Wednesday morning commute. #miweather #keweenaw #westernup #marquette #munising #seney #newberry #soo #straitsareaMixed precipitation, mainly of rain and snow, will spread west to east across the UP tonight into tomorrow morning. SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/12/26
Good evening everyone! We had on and off snow showers in the Soo today and picked up another couple of inches.
Turbo and Diane were out in the Pisten Bully today on the 889 loop, the powerlines, and 480 north of M28. Here’s what Turbo had to say-
“Howdy everyone! Turbo here. Wanted to give a little trail update. I woke up early and told Mrs. Turbo I would like to take her out for a romantic breakfast. Little did she know we had to grab our Pisten Bully and a Dubie first. We groomed trail 480, the power lines, and the 889 loop, then down to Bay Mills where we had a very good breakfast before heading back on the trail. This was our first time grooming the loop this year, and I just have to say the crew has been doing a great job while we weren't here. I would have to say it is better than anytime last year already. So, if you're thinking about coming up, make some plans, load the sleds, call off work and get up here!! That's all I have today. Turbo”
Looking awesome! Thank you Turbo and Diane! ❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0112a #snowphotos

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

WEATHER UPDATE via Michigan Storm Chasers >> It's noon here on Monday, January 12th, and this week does present a couple instances of lake effect snow throughout the week. As a preliminary first call for the entire week, we've displayed current odds at areas receiving more than 4" of snow based on data from medium range models, and the WPC.
Most of the lake effect snow for the UP will fall between Tuesday and Thursday, where much of the higher elevation areas along Lake Superior currently have a greater than 50% chance at 4" of snow by the end of the work week. For much of the LP, lake effect snow will be confined primarily to Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, especially AFTER Wednesday heading into Thursday. We are keeping an area of 1-20% across much of southern and central Michigan in the event wind shifts or passing clippers allow for extra accumulation, but the greatest chances for 4" will be in the far southwest corner, the thumb, or your typical lake effect zones across northern lower Michigan.
We have lake effect snow forecasts coming all week, along with other forecasts for other weather phenomena such as wind, rain, and perhaps mixed precipitation. SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/11/26
Last one for the day, I think.
Lane went out scouting on 49 today, and there’s definitely some wet spots showing now south of 11 mile. He said it definitely needs cold, but it’s flat and nice with the new snow. Sleds will pack it in, and cold later this week will really seal it up.
I went out with a group to the west after checking on 480 (please see video from earlier), and we had a fantastic day. We went to Trout Lake and hit many forest service roads as we made our way back to the Soo. Chippewa Snowchasers has 472 from west of Rudyard to Trout Lake in amazing condition!
On our return to the Soo, 8 from Brimley east had the typical chatter bumps after a weekend day. We need a bit more snow, another groom, and it’ll be much better.
Couple of low 30s days ahead, then temps nosedive. Based on the images I’ve seen from clubs all over the UP, we all definitely welcome a deep freeze for the swamps.
Hope you all had a great weekend!❄️❄️❄️ #soo #soo0111f #snowphotos

SAULT STE. MARIE AREA UPDATE via Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association >> 1/11/26
Good evening all!
Groomer Pete was out tonight on the city trails, and here’s what he had to say-
“I went out for my scheduled Sunday night of the city trails.
The Good:
The base we do have is pretty thick and flat. The Ashmun Bay access trail ( Trail 8 )is in fine shape all the way to the staging area. Trail 49 from the tracks into town is in good shape, and the hills between the tunnel and the airport are good! The rest of 49 is in good shape as well all the way to 3 Mile.
The Bad:
The warm temps and amount of rain last week definitely hampered our trail building efforts. 449 is pretty good most of the way. There are definitely some soft wet areas approaching Seymour and going to Kewadin. I stayed on the drier side of the trail and avoided opening up any water holes, but riders beware that the water and slush is there! The trails are very icy with a little fluffy powder on top. The sugary snow and powder don’t really setup well, so use caution on turns.
The Ugly:
497, the trail to the High School, is a mess. Tons of water. I made it a couple hundred yards in, and it was a mess. I did a 30 point turn and went back out. I could see significant water holes and nastiness inside the tree line and decided not to make it worse. Plus I was worried about getting stuck, with water hole depth unknown. That trail should be avoided for a couple days until the very cold returns and we get some heavy snow. I would not expect this trail to be groomed again for a few days. Picture is provided to show the conditions.
We survived last weeks warmup and rain, but we have some recovering to do for sure. Do your snow dances and fingers crossed that the cold returns later this week.
-Groomer Pete”
Thanks Pete!
I’ll follow up with a couple more reports from the day in a bit.

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via Hamilton's North Coast Adventures >> We took a casual 70mi groomer ride last night! We knew conditions might have been tough, but we are "reasons why to" people instead of "reasons why not"! We ended up running the loop and laying down some mighty good looking ribbons! We groomed from 5pm until 3am (then an hour long drive home to bed!). Trails were found to be in good shape, but we are seeing a few wet areas showing their ugly faces again. Not bad at all, but the snow bridges softened some, so we filled em back in! We groomed out of Ontonagon South down the 12 RR grade, continuing to Rockland on 137. I turned west on 13 and did a double groom of the infamous rock hill, which was again in amazing shape! I then groomed 13 to 101, 101 to 12, 12 to trail 1, trail 1 to White Pine. I turned around and groomed trail 12 back to Ontonagon. Our rental house books up fast, starting this weekend it is booked up until March. Thank you to our customers who support us! Woofta, long night and a long today with an inability to sleep in!

Click the follow button on our profile today here at Michigan Storm Chasers!

Michigan Snowmobile Trail Report

ONTONAGON AREA UPDATE via Scott's Superior Inn and Cabins >> Ontonagon / Porcupine Mountains Snowmobile Trail Report
We’ve picked up a couple inches of fresh snow over the last couple days, and the timing couldn’t be better. Looking ahead, 8 to 20 inches of new snow is in the forecast starting toward the end of this week, setting the stage for some incredible riding. Adding to the excitement, a rare polar vortex is on the horizon, bringing colder temperatures that typically fire up lake-effect snow off Lake Superior. That combination is exactly what riders love to see this time of year.
The great news is that trails are already in good to excellent condition across the western U.P. Bases are solid, grooming is ongoing, and the colder weather will only help lock everything in. With more snow and sustained cold coming, conditions are expected to improve even further over the next couple of weeks, shaping up for a strong stretch of mid-winter riding.
If you’re thinking about planning a trip, now is the time to get it on the calendar. For lodging right on Lake Superior with easy access to Ontonagon and Porcupine Mountains trails, stay at Scott’s Superior Inn and Cabins. Rider-friendly accommodations, hot breakfast, plenty of parking, and a warm, comfortable place to relax after a full day on the trails. Check availability and make Scott’s your home base for an epic western U.P. ride. #ontonagon #westernup #snowphotos
