Newberry Trail Report – 02/13

FEBRUARY 13, 2012 8:00 A.M.

Trail #9 to Pine Stump Jct/Holland Lake staging area is in fair to good condition. The trail from town to 6 miles north is in poor condition then it improves to fair condition to County Rd. #498 then conditions improve to good up to Holland Lake Staging area.

Groomer Bert groomed Trail #45 to the Falls, he reports a good trail on the grade with dirt mixing in with the snow after you get on camp 7 Rd.

Trail #2/9 toRexton, Trout Lake and Eppoufette is in fair to good condition over all, with a 2 to 3" base. Groomer Jim went Epoufette and said the trail is in good condition. There is ice around the airport.

There is logging on Trail #45 North of Skyline Dr. for 4 to 5 miles.

Logging on Trail #498 North of Co. Rd. 455, be careful in these areas, as the trail may be plowed.

It has come to my attention that there is no fuel symbol on the snowmobile trail map for the North Store. The North Store is located at Wolf Inn Jct. They are open from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M.

We need more snow! And cold weather.

TASA is in need of a snowmobile for checking trail conditions, and get to broke down groomers out on the trail. We would prefer a 2 up. Please contact us at sledding@tasatrails.com

The cerfew for the Village of Newberry is 11:00 P.M. until 7:00 A.M.

FYI: There will not be gas at Rainbow Lodge this year as they are closing for the winter. There is a gas pump logo on the trail map, but they will be CLOSED. The map is new for this year, and I recieved the information about Rainbow Lodge after the maps went to the printer.

Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 02/13

Grooming is still on going. They are trying to keep the trails in the best shape they can with what they have to work with. Expect icy corners and bare spots around towns. THINK SNOW!!

GOGEBIC RANGE TRAIL AUTHORITY-Overall conditions are fair and extremely icy. Conditions again once you get out on the trails you will find some good riding. Trail 2 from Ironwood to Wakefield is poor to fair, expect some bare spots. It’s best to trailer to Wakefield and ride from there. Trails 2 & 8 out of Wakefield are in fair to good conditon. Trail 160 from the lookout to the Wisconsin border snow is marginal. 11N is fair use caution around the water spot, signs are posted and again closer to the lake snow is marginal. 11S conditons are fair. Closer to the Wisconsin border where the logging is ongoing conditons are poor.
LOGGING IS PLANNED OFF SOUTH BOUNDARY ROAD SO WATCH FOR SIGNS AND PLOWED AREAS. This section is poor.

LAKE GOGEBIC AREA GROOMERS – Grooming is ongoing. Trail 8 east is in fair condition. All other trails are fair to good. Around town expect bare spots and please use caution on corners they are very icy.

U.P.THUNDER RIDERS OF WATERSMEET-Reports grooming has stopped due to the weather. We need more snow for groomers to go out. Trails 2 & 3 conditions are fair with poor spots. Expect thins spots and icy. Trail 3 is in good shape with icy corners.

Keep in mind the groomers will be out day and night, so watch for them, and PLEASE pull over or at least slow down and wait for the operator to signal you by whenever you see them. Please use caution on corners in all areas they may be icy..

ABOUT THE ICE:
It’s time for our usual caution. There is no such thing as "safe ice" due to underwater currents. If you choose to go out, be sure you talk to locals where you intend to ride for specific information about the ice depth and other factors…be aware you will be riding at your own risk.

You can take a look at web cams throughout the area to check out the conditions for yourself. Find links on our website at westernup.info.

Here are a few gas station updates. The gas station in Paulding is closed so plan ahead for filling up. On the up side the gas station in Marenisco is now open.
