Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 02/20

It’s a beautiful (if you’re not a snowmobiler) spring morning on the Keweenaw! Blue skies, sunshine and temps to hit the upper 30s. Warm temperatures and very heavy traffic have taken a toll on the trails, but there are still areas where the riding is good….stick to the high ground, and in the wooded areas. Looks like temperatures will fall later in the week, and there is a chance of snow too – don’t give up on winter yet!

This is the Keweenaw trail system report for Monday, February 20, 2012.

The snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are open and groomers are out working on them. Trails are in poor to good condition. Remember to watch out for the groomers when you’re out on the trails….they have the right of way!!! Please watch out for deer on the trails too.

There is logging on a portion of Trail 133.

Please be aware that if you snowmobile on U.S. Coast Guard property you could face federal trespass charges.

The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, please, drive safely. The signs on the snowmobile trails are there for the riders’ safety. Please, DO NOT remove or destroy these signs.

Newberry Trail Report – 02/20

FEBRUARY 20, 2012 8:00 A.M.

With the temps getting up into the upper 30s it does not look good for grooming today. The trails have held up pretty good considering the amount of traffic this weekend.

Trail #9 to Pine Stump Jct/Holland Lake staging area is in fair to good condition. The trail from town to 6 miles north is in poor condition then it improves to fair condition to County Rd.415,/Trail #498 then conditions improve to good up to Holland Lake Staging area.

We groomed Trail #45 to the Falls, good trail on the grade with dirt mixing in with the snow after you get on camp 7 Rd.

Trail #2/9 toRexton, Trout Lake and Eppoufette is in fair to good condition over all, with a 2 to 3" base. There is ice around the airport.

There is logging on Trail #45 North of Skyline Dr. for 4 to 5 miles.

Logging on Trail #498 North of Co. Rd. 455, be careful in these areas, as the trail may be plowed.

It has come to my attention that there is no fuel symbol on the snowmobile trail map for the North Store. The North Store is located at Wolf Inn Jct. They are open from 9 A.M. to 9 P.M.

We need more snow! And cold weather.

TASA is in need of a snowmobile for checking trail conditions, and get to broke down groomers out on the trail. We would prefer a 2 up. Please contact us at sledding@tasatrails.com

The cerfew for the Village of Newberry is 11:00 P.M. until 7:00 A.M.

FYI: There will not be gas at Rainbow Lodge this year as they are closing for the winter. There is a gas pump logo on the trail map, but they will be CLOSED. The map is new for this year, and I recieved the information about Rainbow Lodge after the maps went to the printer.
