Greetings Sledders,
Sorry to bother you but something’s come up. It snowed last night and it’s continuing as I write this amended report. I have generated this thing for 12 years now and this has to be the most frustrating of all those years. The weather forecast continually dances around like a ballerina on steroids making it very difficult to report with any degree of confidence. We went from not going to get anything to maybe 1 or 2 to what actually is happening which is 2" last night and another 2" forecast for tonight.
What does that do to the conditions rating? It elevates it to fair is the simple answer. The rating can’t go to good without having something other than ice for a base and the 2-4" that we are looking to get does nothing to contribute to base. I could easily say that we got 2" therefore we now have 2" of base. NOT. Doesn’t work that way, base building is a work in progress and it takes many snow events for us to pan and build base. Personally I think people are more interested in what they are riding on ( ice, dirt, loose snow, tight snow ) rather than the so called depth of base.
Promise I won’t bother you again till Monday, maybe.
Ride Often and Please Be Safe,
Keith, Sandy and The Girls

Trail Report: Feb 24th , 2012 @ 8:46 am
Reports coming in are still rating the trails in our area to be in “Poor to Fair” condition ~ but are getting better today with this snow that is coming down. Where they run through the woods and are protected they are being rated “Fair to even Good” in some places. Reports from riders yesterday said: Trail 7 that parallels Old 27 from the Grayling area to north of Gaylord is still showing bare spots in many places, especially along Otsego Lake where it is all dirt and just not rideable at this time. Once you get on trail 4 though the rough spots and head to the West, you’ll find better conditions. Where trail # 4 parallels Mancelona Road they were still seeing some bare ground in the open areas or on the hilltops. We have the chance of receving 1 ~ 2 inches of snow today and 1 ~ 2 inches of snow tonight. As always please check back here for updated reports.

Trail Report – Friday Morning….
by Heart Lake Resort on Friday, February 24, 2012 at 7:05am
I would still rate the trails in our area to be in poor to fair condition but are getting better today with this snow that is coming down. (go to NOAA.gov and plug in Gaylord, MI) Where they run through the woods and are protected I would rate them fair and even good in some places. I did some riding yesterday to check them out to be sure. Trail 7 that parallels Old 27 from the Grayling area to north of Gaylord is still showing bare ground in many places, especially along Otsego Lake where it is all dirt and just not rideable at this time. Once you get on trail 4 though and head to the West, you’ll find better conditions. Where trail # 4 parallels Mancelona Road I am still seeing some bare ground in the open areas or on the hilltops. The back country and two-tracks still have good snow. The temperature now is 28.2 here at Heart Lake Resort. If you ever need more information or an honest trail report, whether you’re staying with us or not, please feel free to call. If you need a place to stay, please give us a call as well.
