Ironwood Trail Report – Gogebic Range Trail Authority – 12/12

GRTA groomer operator Steve G. took a video of him grooming back to Bessemer from Wakefield late last night. The ski hill section is in better shape than we imagined, but there are several icy spots. We’ll see how much traffic the trails have today/tomorrow, hopefully weekday guys can go easy and not rip the trails up. We’ll be out tonight/tomorrow night to try and give our weekend warriors the best trails possible.

12/12/18 Facebook Trail Report:
*Be sure to view our MSA Trail Report: msasnow.org/trail-reports/grta/ *

We are trying to be as honest and up front about trail conditions as we know so many of you drive such a long ways to ride. It’s mid week and trail conditions are holding steady, surprisingly. Things can change quickly with bright sun and 35+ degrees, but we’ll keep you updated. Right now, riding this weekend may be feasible, but we’ll know more Friday. We just got word 2019 maps are in and will hopefully get them available this weekend.

Trail 160: Groomed yesterday, final 6 miles being groomed today. The southern 5-8 miles is poor with many icy spots and lots of rocks. The northern 1/2 of the trail is fair to good condition due to elevation, more lake effect fell in that area. The trail from Crestview to Norlund is poor, Crestview to spring lane is also poor due to water draining from the wet fall/summer yet. Spring Lane to Lake Road was not bad, but many downed trees removed. Lake road to Sunset road was fair. Sunset road to Airport road is quite rocky, need more snow. Airport road to Northstar road is fair. Northstar road to Vanderhagen road fair. Norlund road and north is fair.

Trail 2 from Bessemer to Wakefield: Overall fair, with some poor sections and some excellent sections. We continue to cross at the Ramsay Crossing intersection until the new reroute can be opened. Prospect road ditch trail is not groomed per agreement with Road Commission who helped facilitate the reroute. The trail from Blackjack road to Indianhead is very icy from freezing it down with no new snow. On top of Indianhead descending to Wakefield is good condition with some icy corners. Once down the hill near Wakefield the trail is icy due to running water yet and lack of snow to carry over it.

Due to the weight of our New Holland Tractor we are not using it right now to keep the ice cover intact and water holes froze over. See picture captions for locations.

Ontonagon Trail Report – 12/12

Trail Report:

Wish we had better news…..

7 day forecast has highs between 30 and 40 with very little precipitation. The following seven days look more promising.

We are out doing what we can with what we have.

Between 6″-8″ in Ontonagon.

Trail #12 – Greenland to Trail #137 is in poor to fair condition with multiple wet spots. We drained a beaver pond just east of Woodspur Road, that area has not completely frozen yet, use caution.

Trail #137 – Rockland to Ontonagon is in fair condition but with limited snow gravel is showing through in spots.

Trail #12 – Ontonagon to Potato Farm Road is poor to fair with many areas of standing water. It is very wet just east of the airport. None of the ditches along Norwich Road have enough snow to groom.

White Pine has between 8″ – 10″ of snow.

Trail #12 – Potato Farm to White Pine is in poor to fair condition. The usual spots along L.P. Walsh Road are wet.

Trail #1 – White Pine to Lake of the Clouds is poor to fair. Wet spots between White Pine and Silver City. Pictures below. The road from Porkies Ski Hill to LOTC is fair.

Trail #11 – (South Boundary Road) is in fair condition over to Trail #102.
