After a depressing day of rain yesterday we are back to cold and snow today!
TASA TRAIL REPORT
December 21, 2018
Trails are in rough shape due to the warm temperatures. It rained on Wednesday and Thursday. Today it is colder and we are getting snow flurries. In town our trails are down to mud but all the gates are open on trail #45 and trail #9. The south trail #9/2 has lost it snow.
All of our trails have wet areas so please be careful. The trail from County Road 500 to the Tahquamenon Falls is open but the swamps are not frozen PLEASE DO NOT RIDE this trail until we get colder weather and our report is updated.
Trail #9 Fair Condition.
Trail #45 There is not any snow on the ground from M-123 to Skyline Rd. The TASA crew is still cleaning up brush on Camp Seven Road.
Trail #2/9 This trail lost all of its snow due to the rain and warm temperatures. ..
Warm and drizzle yesterday and this morning, but snow is said to turn on today and temps will drop so we can get out grooming again (hopefully) soon. Conditions will forever be in the eyes of the handlebar holder, so we try to not oversell . Early season conditions means a thin base with rock/water hazards. Trails have plenty of snow for cooling and lubrication for trail sleds. Are they perfectly white all the time? Heck no. Are there snirty and low snow spots with a water hazard here and there? Absolutely. Will the trails get icy once temps drop, VERY MUCH SO. Trail conditions vary dramatically, so if you’re not afraid of some tough spots you’ll enjoy your ride. If you’re looking for that 12-30″ trail base perfectly white conditions you will be disappointed. We have members heading out to get pictures of trail conditions for an early afternoon update. The outlook today is not as good as it was Tuesday, but with a couple of inches that could help a lot. However, we need much more snow than just a couple of inches. Hang in there!! – Steve, GRTA President
GRTA Groomer Operator Scott S, who owns Sasquatch Lodge Vacation Rental said, “Trail 2 from Indianhead to Sunday lake is in Fair to poor condition. Poor being lots of bare pavement. Gas Station access is bare (many running the lake). Trail 2/8 intersection is in fair condition with some water issues just starting to reappear. Trail 8 to Tula/Bergland is in good condition. With temps dropping throughout today and tonight, with some new snow coming, conditions will continue to improve. Trail 2 at Ramsay Crossing is fair. Trail 2 along Prospect road is poor. Trail 2 through Blackjack Mountain – Big Snow Resort & Indianhead Mountain – Big Snow Resort are in good condition with some thin areas as well as water hazards. PLEASE THROTTLE TRAILS LIGHTLY!”
Trails will only improve from this point forward. We are evaluating grooming plans and will update what was groomed, if anything, tomorrow morning. Trail conditions are always only seen through the eyes of the handlebar holder, so, here you go.
