Keweenaw Peninsula Trail Report – 01/27

This is the Keweenaw Snowmobile Trail System Report for Friday, January 27, 2017.

Snowmobile trails from Twin Lakes to Copper Harbor are open and trails are in poor to fair condition with a base ranging from 12-24 inches. The groomers are out. There are water holes on trail #3 outside of Dollar Bar and Hungarian Falls. Between Canal Road and Old Mill Hill in Houghton there is very little snow cover and lots of water.. There has been a major washout on the South Freda trail so please use caution. The mat on the Portage Lift Bridge is down.

Trail 122 is closed for logging. You can still access the Dreamland trail from Lake Linden but DO NOT go beyond. You can take Trail 124 to get to Gay.

Remember when you’re out on the trails to watch out for the groomers. They have the right away. Use caution around logging areas.

The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau asks that you stay on the trails, STAY OFF THE ICE, respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, drive safely. The signs on the trails are there for riders’ safety so please DO NOT remove or destroy them.

Western U.P. Trail Report – Western U.P. Bureau – 01/27

Lake Gogebic Webcam

Lake Gogebic Webcam

Our trails overall need more snow. The forecast for this coming week is temps in the 20’s but not a whole lot of snow.

Gogebic Range Trail Authority Report

Overall conditions are poor. Trails have not been groomed in a week due to temperatures.
Our trails will require a lot of rework to get them back in shape. We will keep you posted.

Lake Gogebic Area Groomers Report

It is finally getting colder and we have some snow in the forecast an inch here and there. Our overall condition of the trails is poor. The groomers are good to go and have started heading out where possible. Trail 102 where the water problem was, now has water running down the trail, but our drivers said you can get around it without getting wet. Use caution on this trail and watch for the water. Trail 8 west is looking very wet-early season conditions. Please do not try and ride the ditch along this stretch as you will end up in more water. Best to try to avoid this trail for right now. Just keep in mind that there will be wet areas reopened up on almost all trails so keep speeds down and watch for changing conditions.

Streams, rivers, and swampy areas are not safe at this time, please avoid.

U.P. Thunder Riders of Watersmeet Trail Report

Conditions are fair/poor. It is rideable but it’s like the good, the bad and the ugly out there. You will encounter icy corners, some dirt spots, and wet areas but you should be able to get around them pretty easy. You will also encounter miles of beautiful snow covered trails so it is a mixed bag. Grooming is suspended at this time but it won’t take much to get back out on the trails.

Trail 3 North is fair

Trail 3 South to WI is fair/poor

Trail 2 is fair/poor

Trail 13 South is fair/poor.
Hang in there. Please stay on marked trails. Riding on unmarked trails can result in the club losing easement for that trail and can possibly get yourself a ticket.
