Boyne Area Trail Report – Mountainside Inn – 02/21

Petoskey Snowmobile Club – 02/21
Current Trail Conditions: Good

The trails are still in really good shape, even with yesterday’s sun and warm temps. The worst parts are where you have to ride a roadside. All the roads in the area are clear and dry so you have to get your sled off the shoulder and into the right-of-way (i.e. the ditch) in order to stay on snow. That’s where the groomer cannot go so those areas may need a little extra finesse to ride. Other than that, all the northern trails still have a good amount of snow and are in great shape. Almost all the northern trails were groomed Saturday night.

I don’t have a recent report on the Larry’s Run and I don’t think it was groomed Saturday night. It’s probably safe to assume that it is a little rough this morning (Sunday). We’ll get it taken care of as soon as we can.

Current Trail Conditions: Good

The trails south of alba are getting a bit tan,but there is no dirt showing. The base is groomable with ice under it,so very little dirt is being brought up.The snow is old and granular though so it does not pack well or hold a groom. It is good rideing if you dont mind the light tan snow. The groomers will be running daily.

Boyne Area Trail Report – Mountainside Inn – 02/17

Petoskey Snowmobile Club – 02/16
Current Trail Conditions: Fair

Not much in the way of snow lately. Just an inch or two over the last few days. That, coupled with temperatures getting into the 30s is not a good combination for the trails. Most trails still have a good amount of snow and are in pretty good condition. It’s the steep hills that have the problem. The snow tends to slide down those slopes quickly, which exposes the ice underneath. Our groomers are having some trouble climbing a couple of those slopes. We are going to be out this weekend trying to gather up some snow and push it up those hills to try to keep the trails alive as long as we can. These are primarily on Trail 76 South (the Larry’s Run).

We received an email from the DNR recently regarding snowmobile trail usage. The DNR has dozens of trail counters buried in various locations throughout the area. There happens to be one on Trail 76 South. That trail is the only connector between the Jordan Valley and Indian River. The DNR states that from December 5th through today 10,454 sleds have gone down that trail. That is the highest amount of any trail in the area. We try extra hard to keep that trail groomed at all times.
